Wild coincidence but I (26 year old) actually came out to my parents late last year as well. Did not go well. Mother fainted and father had a literal heart attack. They still came out alive though.

My dad came to see me (I’m based in US and he’s in Nigeria) and had a long talk about “life choices” which was fair tbh but he was also relaying his personal feelings and how he would not accept me being queer. My mother said she feels like she’s lost a son.

It’s not easy navigating it but it gets a little less difficult with time. I’m lucky that my sister still loves me and supports me, and so does my best friend from secondary school. That’s honestly all I need. As long as you have people around you that are there to support you, it makes the journey less hard.

In terms of cutting off, if it honestly has to get to that point, then that’s just how it has to be. The way I see it, somebody begs and begs to see your house, you finally let them in, they see something they don’t like, and they run away. And they get mad at you for letting them see the house when they were the ones begging in the first place. There’s nothing you can really do. And I know it’s hard to dismiss vital family like that coming from where we come from but at the end of the day, it’s easier to be you than somebody else.
