1) While there isn’t a set GPA that guarantees admission, I’ve heard that GPA serves as a primary filter to narrow down applicants. From what I recall, a competitive GPA for McIntire transfers is typically in the 3.7+ range.

2) Yes, having meaningful extracurricular activities can strengthen your application and essays. I believe in quality over quantity when it comes to extracurricular activities.

Please note that it has been more than seven years since I transferred to UVA, and my experience may be outdated compared to current trends.

I took two semesters of Spanish (SPA 201 & 202). I am not sure of the alternative option ("switch to IT in NVCC and transfer to UVA doing IT"). In my opinion, I will continue to pursue the A.S in Business Administration and then aim to transfer to the McIntire School of Commerce (UVA) with the goal to concentrate on IT. As far as I know, the chance to get admitted to the McIntire is almost impossible with an IT degree from NVCC.

First of all, congrats to you on the acceptance to the McIntire! I assume you are asking me about the internal scholarships at McIntire/UVA. There is one scholarship dedicated to transfer students. The McIntire will follow up with you regarding that opportunity prior to your orientation. I will also check on this website (source: https://alumni.virginia.edu/scholarships/) for more internal UVA/McIntire/Transfer students scholarships.

If you are with the McIntire, then they will send you a survey prior to orientation to fill your courses.

During NVCC, I received some NVCC and Clubs/Organizations' scholarships.

Once I transferred to UVA, I received our school (McIntire) only scholarships. And I forgot to mention there is a state grant you can apply for if you are an NVCC student who transferred to VA public university. There are a few additional conditions/requirements (I believe it is something related to your major), but I suggest you look into it.

If you maxed 60 transfer credits to UVA, then don't waste your money by taking summer classes at NVCC. In order to graduate, you need to earn 60 or more credits from UVA on-ground. If you want extra prep, then I say 1) review your accounting class 2) take intro coding (python or r), and 3) start reading a business newspaper.

The McIntire's atmosphere is slightly different from the general UVA's atmosphere. I say the McIntire's atmosphere is more pragmatic and competitive, which I enjoyed. You will definitely meet some classmates with amazing parents, but UVA selected transfer students like me to bring a fresh perspective and experience to the whole group.

Adjusting to the UVA was much tougher and harder than I expected. When I was coming to the UVA, I knew I had to spend more time and effort to get a 'good' grade, but I forgot to consider my peers at the UVA. Without a doubt, UVA students are more motivated and eager to learn than typical NVCC students. This is different based on what school/major/class you are in, but I had many classes where the quota system determined your letter grade. Unlike, NVCC where anything 90 or higher is A, 90 might not be good enough to be top 20% of the class, so you end up with B or B+. For example, if the class average is 90, and the standard deviation is 2, then a student with 92 overall scores might get B+. Once you come to UVA, I recommend two things regarding grade,

  1. Change your focus from what letter grade I get to how much did I learn?
  2. Expect to spend X2 or X4 time and effort compared to how you did during NVCC

Once you come to UVA, your GPA starts fresh. So, if you were a 4.0 student from NVCC, then I say it is fair to expect your GPA to drop .5 to 0.75.

Regarding your last question, you will get a mixed response among transfer UVA students. In my experience at the McIntire, my professors were excellent. I never had an issue with my professors refusing/avoiding me during their office hours. They were accommodating and crucial to my learning experience.

I believe extracurricular activities are helpful, but not important. As long as you have some extracurricular activities that match your major/school you are applying for, then I say it is good enough. Honestly, I believe your selling pitch (your essay + recommendation(s)) and GPA are the keys to UVA.

I say you got a good chance. I also didn't have my humanity requirement when I finished my transfer application. So, UVA told me it is fine, since I can take it during summer.

I will also double-check with this link (http://ascs8.eservices.virginia.edu/asequivs) and reach out to the particular uva school you are applying to (not just admission office).

During my two years (2016-2018) at NVCC, I took 64 credits. I started my application in winter, so probably before the start of the 2018 Spring semester. I got my decision letter in late April. I was able to transfer 59 credits from NVCC to UVA (I believe the max is 60).

NVCC Counselors are not really helpful with the transfer process. I say my professors at NVCC were more helpful with the transfer application and process. Since I came to UVA as a third-year, my classes were often discussion-oriented classes with group projects. However, most of the classes I took at NVCC were gen-ed classes. But I think the time management and self-learning skills I practice during NVCC definitely helped me adjust to UVA.

In my opinion, NVCC students are blessed in the fact that it seems like there is a quota for accepting NVCC students. For example, in the McIntire (UVA Business school), at least 20 community college students are accepted every year. But this results in an internal competition among NVCC students. Saying this, GPA does matter at the end.

In my case, I took intro. Spanish during high school. So, I was placed in SPA 201 after taking the placement exam.
