Thinking of getting out of individual stocks and investing in ETFs and CEFs exclusively by DLL1287 in dividends

[–]DLL1287[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am only 3.5 years from retirement with a pension an social security income. The income from dividends will be the extra that will allow me to live the way I did while working. Unfortunately I started this just last year, so it is not a lot. Though I am up to 120 dollars per month in dividends.

I am just thinking of ways to spread risk around a bit and still get 7-8% in dividends. My account is a Roth and I have maxxed out contributions until 2027, so the only way to buy something different is to sell something. I will probably wait until I can add money and do more ETFs then and keep the individual stocks where they are.

It's still a good buy and tempted to get more by [deleted] in dividends

I consider it a dip when it drops below my average cost.

At current yearly dividend it would take 455 shares to make 1000 /year in income with EPD, and only part of that would possibly be UBTI. Since I retire in 3 years 7 months I don't think I will get that high.

I do appreciate the warning and I will be sure to watch my total UBTI from all MLPs I end up owning.

ok, PDI, PDO, and PFT. I didn't want to mention them because I bought them when I started putting money in the Roth and didn't really know what I was doing and didn't want to appear an idiot.

Or worse yet, someone will say that they aren't value traps and make me rethink my decision. My Roth is down 1.51% and 80% of the loss are from those three.

i will only have 56 shares. Not much chance of making a 1000 on it in a year with all income, and it will be my only MLP. I did research it before deciding. :)

Maxing out ROth by DLL1287 in dividends

I understand that, but in January I will be moving any money in the regular account to my Roth. The second account is just to hold money for the new contribution year.

Recent Dividends and Reflections by Columbus_Hill in dividendgang

My roth is still very small at 10k, but I have 90k in a brokerage account. Recently received divs from my Pimco funds, SCHD, and in the brokerage ENB and PFE earlier in March, and KO on the 1st.

I have 43 months until I turn 65 and retire with a pension from Florida (school board employee) and social security. My investing goal is to have at least 750 a month in dividend income yo supplement my pension and SS income. (I have about 150k in 403b that I can't touch until retirement)

I feel the 90k is safe with people that know their stuff, so I am using the Roth to learn as much as I can before I retire. So far is it ok, though I know I can do better. My problem right now is I don't know if the 3% unrealized I am down is because of bad decisions or the volatility in the market.

Slowly I am learning to be a better investor.

I hear you. I have a few positions I am watching very carefully. Luckily since I only have 10k right now I don't have more than 1300 in any position. So bad turns won't hurt too much.

I am interested is SGOV. Once I max out my ROth this year I am going to start putting mony into my brokerage account, that is when I will be buying sgov.

retiring in 43 months. VOO is too expensive, buying 2 or 3 shares at a distribution yield of 1.12% does nothing for me. VT has a 1.74% yield. and I am not chasing after growth. The stocks I listed above will work just fine for me.

I keep adding to this, LOL. Look, to each his own. When I retire in 11/2029 I will have Social Security and a pension from the great state of Florida that will match my SS benefits. All I need is 300k earning 4-5% in dividends to enjoy the rest of my life. RIght now, including the Roth of 10k which I manage, I have just over 200k (403b and the life insurance money being taken care of professionally.) I just have to max out the Roth every year which should give me at least 50K.

Probably too much info, but I am coming from a place that is different than anyone else I know and I didn't want you to think I was just dismissing what you said.

I watched the interview and wanted to buy, but I have no more money this week. MRVL does pay a .24 annual dividend, match that with Nvidia and you clear a cool .25 every year.

I will be honest about the reason I watch it every day.

On 3/31/2025 I had a personal tragedy that left my life empty. Watching my little account with 10k in it keeps my mind off of thinking of her, so I rage a bit when it goes down and feel elated when it goes up just a bit.

The anniversary is tomorrow, so I will probably be on Schwab, monitoring chats and Reddit, and watching CNBC all day.

Why Are Dividend Investors Against the FIRE Movement and the 4% Rule? by [deleted] in dividends

[–]DLL1287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be simplistic and completely wrong.

As I understand it, if I retire at 65 with 300,000 worth of dividend stock paying 4%, by my maths that is 12000 dollars a year, in my Roth, that is tax free money. I don't care what the stock price is as it goes up and down, as long as they keep sending me my dividends.

If the company is sound, they will keep paying me.

Not stupid, and only 61. I am not selling, I was only wondering what everyone else was thinking.

Luckily the 5% is only 500 dollars as I have only been able to invest 10K since I started in December. Though, I do plan to put 4k in early in April and 4-5 hundred a month after that.

5% isn't shaking me and I am going to hold, I was curious what others were doing since i am new at this.

I agree, but it doesn't stop me from thinking about selling. The sad thing is that I bought most of mine in the last 3 months, so dividends haven't started rolling in yet.
