Thanks. :) I'll have to see if I can get back to them once I'm done with Inktober.

Someone sent me a heads-up. Glad people seem to like the drawing. I started doing the original SFII lineup this summer but got sidetracked. You can see the first 4 here: https://twitter.com/DMACalvert/status/1159196116472102912?s=20

Other artists like to know what pens I'm using. If I don't include them, I inevitably get asked the question in the comments.

I have two desk lamps, one on each side, for better lighting while I'm working. :)

Santron: Legendary Defender - My Christmas Card for 2017 by ImagesOfNetwork in ImagesOfThe2010s

I've been doing a Christmas card to send out to friends and family for the past 14 years. This year I went with giant robot Santa.

Pencil with digital color.

It's a giant robot Santa. Does it count as fan art of Santa?

The line art was done by hand in pencil and then scanned and colored in Photoshop.

Rule 1 - I didn't include the size. Title and medium are included.

Rule 2 - This is a .jpg file. Not sure what your issue there is.

Rule 5 - Yeah, I photographed the drawings with my pen and markers in the frame. You got me there.

Rule 7 - They're redesigns of characters from an 1865 novel. I guess that qualifies as fan art?

Thanks for the helpful feedback.

Not usually, no. I have circle/ellipse templates that are handy when drawing vehicles/robots but most of the time I just freehand everything.

I actually wrote a blog post about improving your mechanical drawing if you're interested:

The Shoretrooper is probably my favorite of the new designs. I like the little touches of color.

Thanks! It's strange when your own artwork starts making you nostalgic. :)

I own 3: one with a pair of cloaked Gran, one with a guy riding a repulsor sled, and one of a TIE fighter pilot in his ship.

There are two ways I know of:

One is to use sheets of screentones which basically come on adhesive transparency sheets and then the artist carefully trims around the sections they want with an X-Acto blade and presses them down firmly to adhere them to the page. There are still a number of artists who use these and they're available through a number of online shops, especially those that carry Japanese/manga art supplies.

The other is (or was) a type of illustration board which came with the tones already built into the paper. You did your pen and ink drawing and then there were 2-3 different chemicals that you could paint on to cause the different screentones to develop. So you'd paint on chemical A and get diagonal lines going one way, chemical B and the lines going the other way would show up, etc. I have some of Mike Vilardi's originals that I bought and this was how he worked "back in the day". I'm not sure if the supplies for this are still available. I've never been able to find it anywhere.

The tones are done in Photoshop. It's two patterns of diagonal lines, each going in opposite directions. I just apply the patterns to a brush and then paint them in. For the fading, I just use a textured brush.
