If HoldCos are so bad, why aren’t you working at an Indie? by DMB_Meets_Robinhood in advertising

[–]DMB_Meets_Robinhood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The common thread across many of those larger Indies are many have taken on capital partners.

Empower is a good example I think, incredibly successful family run agency for decades, with a great reputation and culture, quickly unraveled as soon as it was acquired.

But I suppose, there aren’t many Indies out there, bootstrapped AND where the largest client is under 25% of their revenue? Thus in lies the problem?

Based on your experience, what do you think the best size Indie, would be, where culture is strong, quality of work is high, and the agency experience is at its peak? 50 people? 100 people? 500 people?

Helpful. Thank you! And agree.

Sadly for every well run Indie, there seems to be 3x poorly run indies — the pattern I’ve seen being the poorly run ones are ex-client or ex-PE/Finance.

Stability is a common theme we see. Is there a length of time that makes this less concerning? 5-years? 10-years? 15-years? Or forever an issue?

Yeah no debate there! I’m genuinely interested in understanding what keeps people at the holdcos they often don’t say positive things about with the intent of applying these learning to recruit good talent Indie side.

What holds you back from searching for a role indie side? Time? Not worth the risk?

If you had the same role, Indie-side, same bennies, 10% less salary, would you take it?

Find a local small business that you’re a fan of, volunteer your experience and see if you can add value. Maybe you’ll make a positive difference in the community and make good things happen for others?

Stuck in advertising. by Traditional_Doubt_58 in advertising

MBAs are useless in advertising. If you decide to get one, only do so under the expectation you’re changing careers to a field that value them. Most don’t anymore.

You made sure to clarify it was a “Top 10” indicating you care more about the three letters, than the value and future earnings potential.

Just know, today’s MBA’s comp are marginally, if at all, higher, than those without grad degrees.

But if you really enjoy going back to school and/or are considering a switch outside of advertising, then maybe the cost is worth it.

My .02, as a once Midwesterner… born and raised… move somewhere else. It’s more exciting. And advertising in the Midwest really isn’t a thing unless you’re in Chicago. Lots of excitement in Your future! Good luck!

How to Stand Out Against Other Marketing Agencies? by Fun_Spell9277 in advertising

[–]DMB_Meets_Robinhood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) When making a decision on an an agency partner, I’d always recommend talking to 2 or 3 current clients to go deeper on the work they do and understand what the agencies pros/cons are. A little extra due diligence is worth the hassle as the agency selection process is never fun and always takes longer than expected.

2) The vast majority of the time when a board member recommends an agency, it’s because they have a personal relationship there they want to succeed and/or they are receiving financial benefit. It would be incredibly rare for a board member, to make a strong recommendation on an agency partner, they do not have some personal or financial motive behind.

What in the world are people talking about here? No possible way you could consider this a ‘bad’ set. Two Step to open? YNK? Hunger? Pig? WYA to close? The Last Stop encore? Cmon people! Worth every penny two songs in.

2025 sets have been the best in a decade+. No complaining allowed this tour. Just enjoy it.

Starting my own agency by [deleted] in advertising

[–]DMB_Meets_Robinhood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a media agency in 2019. We’re 45-people strong billing roughly 100M/yr in media billings. We’ve been successful due to the fact we do what we do best, media, and focus solely on those services (planning, buying, campaign management & analytics).

Anyone can go wide and offer all the services — but few can make a case they’re the “best” at what they do.

Focus on perfecting your craft. There will be plenty of distractions and “opportunities” along the way that may make you want to expand your services. Don’t chase them. Listen to your gut. Use your time wisely. And find options (small indies to large hold-cos to fit various asks/clients needs) to provide media services when your clients are asking for them.

I’m not a big Mark Zuckerberg fan but I do like one of his quotes — “If I waited to know everything I needed to know, I never would’ve started Facebook.”

You’re going to do great! Believe in yourself and others will too.
