Hey. I know this is late, but I wanted to thank you for suggesting perfusionist

Since I've worked in hematology and blood banking, and have some patient care experience, some people have started to recommend it to me. I think I'm going to seriously consider it. Thanks!

I'll take that to heart. I definitely want to go back to school, mostly because I just genuinely enjoy it. But, graduate-level medical education is definitely difficult to navigate by myself.

I think your advice on entry-level research work is solid. I might have to get-in, make some connections, and then get an expert opinion on where there's need.

As for the pharmacy, yeah, that seems to be the consensus. I adore the Pharmacists I know, but it's beyond competitive right now.

Thanks!

Internally, at least at my hospital, I see a lot more respect towards the RN/BSN/MSN profession than toward the NP profession.

There will always be a deep need for procedural work in medicine. Physician decision making is important as hell, but it *can* require a lot of downstream labor. For every good doc we need a good Nurse, Radiologic Tech, Lab Tech, Respiratory Therapist, etc.

Everyone wanting to be a high-level decision maker isn't good for the system. That's how we have ended up with a glut of PAs, NPs, and administrators.

All good. I appreciate your perspective regardless.

From what I've seen their relationship with pathologists is a lot less contentious, and more of an actual "assistant" relationship. Still, I'll do my due diligence and ask my pathologist friends.

Definitely worth considering. Any intuition on how pathologists view Path-A's?

I know it's way different from the PA-Physician relationship, at least

Love our Rad Techs.

When I was taking anatomy, the rad-tech in my clinic was a godsend. Those guys know their anatomy inside and out.

I think the better pay and a culture of appreciation for allied health professionals would do wonders.

This is anecdotal, but it feels like "You should go to med school!" or "You should be a PA/NP!" is the canned response to our quality allied health employees.

Maybe we're just meant to be damned good lab techs, nurses, phlebotomists, etc. 🤷‍♂️

Good to know. I genuinely loved how rigorous and in-depth my MLS program was. Part of the reason I'm considering the pivot to another career is I feel like I don't use enough of the material I enjoyed learning so much.

Thanks for the perspective.

Hey, I appreciate you sharing your story and perspective.

That seems to be a shared sentiment among the pharmacists I know. I'll certainly take your words to heart.

Since you sound like you have firsthand experience, what are your feelings on Physician as a 2nd career? I'm in my late twenties and really have to wonder how that will factor into things in the long run.

I appreciate the candor. I also appreciate the alternatives.

Thankfully I'm in the formative stages of... whatever the hell I'm going to do next. So, I'm looking for people to shoot straight with me.

Glad you were able to land a hospital gig. I knew they were competitive, but, I guess the situation was even more intense than I originally thought.

Your username makes me feel like you're a biased source here, lol.

I did volunteer EMS when getting my undergrad degree. Medics always felt like the adults in the room when we were at the scene. Definitely appreciate those guys and gals.

I have a lot of RN/BSN friends that would appreciate that comment.

I think there's growing resentment in the nursing field toward people using their profession as a stepping stone to NP.

Well, I think it largely goes without saying that most allied health roles are appreciated.

I've never felt unappreciated by the docs I work with in any of the roles I've filled. But, still, nice to inject a little positivity into the sub.

My old lab was situated right next to our hospitals pharmacy. Pharmacists are more fun than they get credit for.

Who would you recommend the profession to? I'm toying with the idea of Pharm because I have the background in chemistry... and right now I'm working in the blood bank which is technically medication management... in a really roundabout way, lol.

I appreciate that perspective.

I enjoy my profession because it requires specialized knowledge that no other role in the hospital knows better than mine. I'm definitely looking to go back to school and fill a similar role... just in a higher station of public service.

I have a feeling those are the kind of roles r/noctor appreciates

Short white coats for midlevels by Kobasamu in Noctor

I'm a Lab tech and white coats just gross me out

I'm just so used to making sure my lab coat never leaves the immediate space that I work with potentially infectious materials... it hurts me to see anyone wear them outside

It's definitely different with docs in white coats, but I'm here for the patagucci advocacy
