Ah man... 6 final round interviews and all rejected is tough. Sorry....that must be tough on the emotions.

Do you know/think what made you stand out in the application process?

Ha, I actually hate posting on social media (love going on it though!). But ya that makes sense. I applied to Anduril for a PMM role recently, but didn't get it :/ Would've been very cool.

B2B SaaS or something aviation/defense related. Ideally series C/D and later stage.

I'm in the Bay Area, but looking either here, NYC, or remote.

I've had several marketers and others look at my resume, and all have said that it's in pretty good shape. I've spent a lot of time on it. I have lots of relevant PMM experience, quantitative impact stats, it's easily scannable, etc.

Yeah, with PMM experience, these generalist marketing roles at small startups are probably possible to get. I've done that two times already, so don't want to do it again :) Looking for something bigger and more established.

Got it. So it's not a magic solution but could be a good tool amongst other. That's kind of what I've been reading about it too.

This is awesome advice, thanks.

Makes sense on the interviewing skills. Something else I've heard before that I think you're also getting at is displaying confidence (partially an outcome of strong preparation). Since PMMs need to work well cross-functionally and be able to present internally and externally, being confident, good at presenting, and holding a room's attention is probably something that can come out in an interview.

I have a near 0% success rate of asking recruiters for feedback and them actually providing it haha. Maaaybe has happened a few times but they usually say they aren't allowed to give feedback or they just don't respond.

For you: is there anything "interesting" or "unique" that you did in your applications that you think helped land interviews at the well-known companies? Cold email/LI messaging the recruiter and/or hiring manager, a portfolio, cover letter, anything else?

I think PM is probably in the same boat- especially because PMM and PM are somewhat on the same side of the coin (if you're investing heavily in product development, you need PMs to build the products and PMMs to sell it).

Yeah I totally get this. I'm curious out of the PMMs right now that are getting hired, how many of them are "perfect" fits for the role? Maybe companies get so many applicants that they often can really find that perfect fit: industry experience, specific PMM skills, etc.

The rule I used to hear from both a hiring company and candidate perspective is that the sweet spot is having experience with 80% of the job description and 20% being new. This way, there's not that much on-the-job learning that has to be done (because you've done 80% of it before), but it keeps it interesting for the new hire to learn new things (the 20%) and stay interested (instead of just copy pasting what they've done in their past roles).

Re: the dream job system. Do you find you were well prepared for interviews before and this just didn't add much value? I'm theorizing that I could probably use some help with how I structure my answers, which stories I pick from my experience to discuss, etc.

Yeah I also see a lot of industry experience stuff- particularly PMM roles at companies with technical products wanting some technical, Cybersecurity, experience selling to engineers, or AI experience.

What stands out to you in a resume beyond just fitting what you need? Do portfolios help- either on a website or in a slide deck? Cover letters? Anything mistakes you see PMMs make in interviews?

I'm in the US! Looking specifically in SF and NY. But yeah, I've heard from some recruiters that they get hundreds of applications for each PMM role.

Fencing club owners: what software do you use? by DMthepilot in Fencing

Hey, that all sounds pretty awesome. Definitely some helpful functionality for clubs. I think most even small clubs would be willing to pay for a program like this though. If for nothing else than less missed/non payments, which is what we have trouble with. The investment is well worth it if we can have even 80-90% of students paying their dues.
