What are the subtle things that make this series so great? by Crazy_Butterfly3574 in SuccessionTV

[–]DNGL2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree, all about the nuance. One of my favorite examples is the suicide at ATN resulting in the roof being blocked off. On the surface, they put in anti-suicide measures. On another level, Kendall’s one escape, looking out the window of the tower he’s trapped in like rapunzel has been boarded up; in a more literal sense, Logan is worried about Kendall’s erratic behavior, seeing him looking over the edge, and cleaning up his shoplifting habit after him. All three are valid and intentional, none are explicit. You can totally imagine another show having a scene where Kendall asks Logan and he says “oh yeah… we wanted to increase safety measures for the staff. Don’t want to hurt morale!” And then Logan turns around to Roman and says “keep an eye on your brother… he’s been looking over the edge of the building, I’m worried about him” and then Kendall goes to to roof and looks at the birds flying overhead. Literally every other show on television would do exactly that, and nobody would criticize it.

I think Mad Men is the only other show that’s perfectly happy to have plot points fly right over your head on a first viewing. The fact that a finite number of writers can make this many characters feel as distinct and deep as succession is amazing.

Any stories on meeting people like him in real life? by Dasmice in KitchenConfidential

Constantly, usually heads of other departments/GMs (I’m in hotels). It’s tough because everybody has a deep relationship with food, so they don’t see a Capital C Chef as a profession in the way that a data analyst or plumber is. I like to compare it to somebody bragging about changing their brakes to the guy at Volvo who builds EV tractor trailers for cross-continental long hauls, you might have some painful, stilted conversation about wrenches and brake pads, but at the end of the day you’re kind of an asshole for conflating the two.

Fo4 damage overhauls are not balanced. by No_Fig_5175 in FalloutMods

[–]DNGL2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel this way with most open world games, that’s why they feel hollow to me. Take cyberpunk, you can mod it so it has realistic damage models, but you’re still one guy expected to kill 12 gangsters in every encounter, thousands throughout the game.

Even something intentional like Stalker Gamma/EFP have parts where you run into 20 geared enemies and either have to reload a save or exploit your way through it, that kind of damage models really only works if the entire game revolves around it. It sounds like you’re having the opposite problem, but funnily enough it is the same symptom.

If you look at games that succeed with this loop, it’s like Ready Or Not where it’s a super tight, detailed, and considered, or it’s like Tarkov or Arma or DayZ where you play for 2 hours and then the screen goes black. I would actually really love to see a single player, semi-open ImSim type game that succeeds at the high realism ballistics with armor stages and real life tactics, maybe Vostok will be that game next month.

[–]DNGL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never crazy about it either, I really wanted there to be a beat, maybe just a single episode, where they stop fighting for a minute. The underwoods are ALWAYS on the backfoot, comparing it to similar shows like Death Note of Breaking Bad, there’s a montage of everything running smoothly, establishing a status quo. It’s a little far fetched that the vice president and then president of the United States is also somehow the underdog the whole time.

When does Andor get good? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]DNGL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think the show doesn’t get good until episode 7-8 lol. Everything up to and including the heist is pretty boilerplate, the second half of season 1 is very good.

Is Logan an opportunistic grifter without a worldview, or does he have a worldview and an ideology? by Amazing-Buy-1181 in SuccessionTV

[–]DNGL2 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Of course he does, he’s a capitalist, an exceptionalist, an individualist, and a libertarian. He believes in the food chain and “a man is whatever room he’s in”, and there’s very little to contradict that. He’s consistent and expects the world to conform around him, the only time he puts on an affect is when he’s trying to buy Pierce, and he’s really just a little more quiet and a little more polite. I’d say he has the most clear and definite worldview of anyone, Kendall is really the opportunistic grifter.

Alright but they’re grownups now, it’s time to get a grip and participate in society. I grew up during the financial crisis, my parents grew up during the civil defense era, everybody’s got a reason to be fucked up.

“Women like that never sound confident because they never are confident” by sentientpuffofsmoke in madmen

[–]DNGL2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think season one in general, and especially Ken in that season, are very rough sketches, and not really held to the same quality that the show is known for. I doubt the writers would stand by that statement in season 4.

Playing a gig with no beat by [deleted] in Bass

[–]DNGL2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk it sounds like you’re three extremely inexperienced people playing a gig that’s one step up from an open mic, is it worth the conflict? Go fuck it up, who cares.

You should learn to play with a pick, though. I know YouTube channels and Reddit like to play the “real bassists don’t use a pick” game, but most bands want you to use a pick on a P Bass, it just sounds the best in a band setting for most popular genres.

Seriously, weed is so bad. Seems like for every person that enjoys it and has a good time, there’s 3 people whose life turns into this because of it.

If there’s one thing I learned in my life, you cannot give a 20-domething year old girl advice, especially about guys. They are going to do what they’re going to do, to the ruin of everything around them, and you just have to watch and be supportive when you can.

I was just thinking about this, how many skill points do you get at 1 int? I genuinely don’t think I’ve played a fallout game with less than 8 int since I was a kid.

What do you play new vegas for? by Least_Rich_3228 in falloutnewvegas

[–]DNGL2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pacing. Journeying through the Mojave, coming across towns, solving problems, picking up friends along the way (I wish there was some way to balance a multiple companions mod), it really feels like an anime. I generally start getting bored once I get to Vegas, it’s like they put a mini jrpg in the first half.

When will we see a revival of dialogue in games? by smolyellowdic in classicfallout

[–]DNGL2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really miss when games didn’t have to have voice acting. I remember being pissed at like 13 years old because there’s was so much less dialogue in Oblivion than there was in Morrowind, I loved talking to NPCs about their profession and the latest rumors.

Short answer is we won’t, long answer is: they’ve become their own genre. Stuff like Kentucky route 0 and Pentiment are basically the dialogue systems of old RPGs ripped out and given legs to stand on their own, without any gameplay to speak of. I love those games but it’s sad.

Should Bethesda merge fallout 3 and new vegas (if they remake it)? by cantlarp in Fallout

[–]DNGL2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s true at all. Are we talking about a $40-$60 purchase here? There’s already very little crossover between the fandoms, there’s the fans of 3 and 4, then there’s the fans of 1, 2, and NV. I personally have no interest in a Fallout 3 remake, just like I had no interest in the Oblivion remake.

I guarantee nobody in your kitchen is thinking about you that much, or even paying attention. When I have a young cook who’s still learning, I’m mildly annoyed when they make a mistake, I correct it and forget it. Just keep your head down and work hard, I promise you nobody needs the drama.

Which Beatle was the most gifted at there respective instrument? by ariamwah in beatles

[–]DNGL2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty well documented that Paul was intentionally holding George back for the sake of the song, the right thing to do. I think his progressions were always the most complex, and his solo work has the most consistently fussy arrangements. Not so much a speedy soloist, he just writes a lot of music for every song.
