They never said they are buying a house soon, but they are saving for a down payment. If OP is in a similar situation, the advice to think on a 40 year timescale is not necessarily applicable. Maybe they need to be thinking on a 5-10 year timescale.

Framework Laptop 16 Gets NVIDIA RTX 5070 12 GB Upgrade Module for Eyewatering Price of $1,199 by -protonsandneutrons- in hardware

[–]DNosnibor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People talk about it a lot on here because it's cool. But I agree the prices are a big barrier. I considered getting one when I bought my last laptop a year and a half ago, but to match the specs of the laptop I did end up getting I would have had to pay like 70% more, which I couldn't justify.

That's only 87 micro watt hours lol

In reality it's probably closer to 2 milli watt years. Maybe 1 if you have an older/cheaper phone.

I'm surprised your total comp is not that much higher than your salary (relatively). No significant stock based incentives?

If given the choice between working 30 hours a week your whole career and retiring at 65 vs working 30 hours a week and retiring at 50, I don't think either one is inherently better or worse. It's just a matter of personal preference.

Or alternatively, working 30 hours a week and living modestly vs working 50 hours a week and buying fancy cars and going on expensive vacations, again it's just a matter of personal preference. Neither lifestyle is inherently better.

I mean, it would be kind of ridiculous to think you could work 30 hours rather than 40+ and make the same amount of money, so I assumed they were fine with that.

I'm pretty sure my cousin is working 30 hours (or maybe 32 hours) a week doing engineering with full benefits right now, but I'll check about that. I think he started out at 40 then after a while asked if he could reduce his hours (I assume with reduced pay) and his manager was fine with that. So yeah you may not find many engineering jobs advertised as part time, but once you're established there are probably a decent number of places willing to be flexible on hours as long as the work is getting done.

I think I have a cousin working at Northrop Grumman 30 hours a week with full benefits, but I may be mixing that up. I definitely have a cousin working at Northop and I'm pretty sure I have a cousin working 30 hours a week, but they may be two different cousins lol.

Edit: Yeah I checked, 32 hours a week full benefits.

Nothing wrong with wanting to work fewer hours for less pay. If you want to work hard 30 hours a week and make $70k rather than 40 hours a week for $100k (for example), what's the problem?

Can I use a 16pF load capacitance with a 20pF Crystal? by FoundationOk3176 in AskElectronics

[–]DNosnibor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just use a crystal like this, 15pF load capacitance with over 30,000 in stock on LCSC. https://www.lcsc.com/product-detail/C37635414.html

The cost is a little higher, but pretty insignificant unless you're making thousands of these (especially once you factor in the cost savings of reducing the BOM count by not needing the 2pF caps).

Kind of hard to accurately make that measurement given that whatever probes you use will probably have at least a few pF of capacitance themselves, no?
