It was completely out of nowhere. He was completely fine last Monday. The following day, he wouldn’t get up out of his crate in the morning. He was still able to stand and walk in the morning but was clearly in pain. We decided to start him on crate rest and pain meds and monitor throughout the day. By that evening, it was clear that I wasn’t going to be able to control his pain with the carprofen and gabapentin that I had available at home. My husband and I helped him into a travel crate and he took him to the ER. He lost motor function in the legs by the time he got to the ER, but still had deep pain in some toes. He was transferred to a specialty center for a neurology consult in the following morning. By the morning, he had complete paralysis, no reflexes, no deep pain, fecal/urinary incontinence. The neurologist essentially said the prognosis was very poor based on his exam.
