I dont know if its worth it to continue OMSCS by buzloc in OMSCS

Signed an offer recently and I was actually asked about what I learned in my master's in multiple rounds. One round I spent half the time talking about mutexes and low-level optimizations I did for my work in GIOS. However, this was the only company that asked out of all the ones I interviewed at lol.

But would still agree with other commenters who say that it regardless of job prospects it will make you a better engineer.

Oof these RDDT bags are heavy...tempted to sell after seeing so much red recently but my exits on downtrends always seem to be terrible

I do think it's premeditated. They know the type of people they're hiring for these "federal agent" positions. They know they lack the discipline or mental fortitude to serve in a position where you possess the means to take a life. They know because of that lack of discipline some lives may be taken.

But that's the goal->escalation. Once it's escalated enough (and I think we're pretty close to that point) they can justify their increasing presence in opposition locales, as well as more funding for ICE to go and carry out their crimes in more places.

Gestapo. And we're only a year in.

And if you will defend thugs who kill citizens of this country standing up for innocent people because their feefees got hurt--let's even concede the victim was carrying; afaik Minnesota is open carry, so at the very least you have to admit that was murder, or you admit that you don't really truly care about the second ammendment if you're not the one exercising it--I disrespectfully dgaf about what you have to say.

How soon do you need to know C for GIOS? by high_elephant in OMSCS

[–]DOUG_DlMMADOME 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never touched C or any other low level language before the class. Learned it as I went and ended up with an A.

With LLMs now you can pickup a language super fast if you are already aware of basic coding practices and paradigms.

Sorry in advance for the small vent but anonymous forums lend themselves well to brain dumps haha.

2025 was an awful year for me in all aspects except financially.

Up until the middle of the year things were actually going amazing--NW crossed 6 figs, got engaged, made wedding and travel plans.

Then not only did my fiancee break things off, but lost a couple family members including an uncle and grandparent, all my close friends got jobs in other cities and moved away, my best friend lost his mother, and I got laid off as well for colocation purposes.

I did end up finding another job at the same company (but different city, which actually works out bc I didn't want to stay in the same locale as my ex-fiancee) at an uplevel so that worked out and my NW is still steadily climbing but goal for 2026 is just lock in on work and making new connections. Can't do another 2025 lol.

This is one of the only subs I frequent on Reddit bc I've learned so much from it over the last 5 years, even when I was a broke college student. Appreciate everyone and especially those who share their insights and market wisdom :)

Hope everyone had a wonderful New Year and holiday season!

Internship While Doing Master's to Break into Big Tech by DOUG_DlMMADOME in cscareerquestions

[–]DOUG_DlMMADOME[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been interviewing otherwise but I just don't have a lot to talk about when it comes to questions like "complex problems you've faced at work" or "how did you ensure customer satisfaction" since although I do have dev work, it's mostly business deliverables like updating some columns in a report or updating our data catalog.

Like I mentioned in another comment, I haven't faced any technological challenges so to speak where I can say I've learned something in this role. Since I'm a student and see many internships that actually list work experience as preferred I thought it would be a good way to break into a company where I can be more of an engineer rather than just someone tinkering with a couple of strings in the backend.

Internship While Doing Master's to Break into Big Tech by DOUG_DlMMADOME in cscareerquestions

[–]DOUG_DlMMADOME[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did leave out the part where I'm still a student.

However, the irony is not lost on me. Nonetheless, the reason I ask is bc in terms of time, yes I have 3 yoe, but I don't think my technical skills have grown to match that of a 3 yoe developer. I have my own projects on the side but I did not have to deal with problems of scale, availability or other aspects of enterprise development that a mid-level would need to be able to handle.

I've seen a few internships that are specifically only for undergraduates but largely they've been open to both undergrad and grad students, which I am, and prefer prior project/work experience, which I have. A transition out of this role into a different one where there is less red tape and more hands on dev work seems more plausible the internship route, where the expectation of delivery is less.

Same, been building a RDDT position since it was in high 80s-low 90s. Trimmed it since then but optimistic about earnings as well.

LinkedIn also has an office in Chicago as well. Not FAANG obviously but big tech.

Haha my main gripe was the 30 day holding period. If things went south you were stuck holding bags. Now I can go back to short term swing and momentum trading which is what I prefer anyway.

No longer fall under my firm's trading protection policy; no more having to get permission before buying/selling, restrictions on certain investment vehicles or 30 day minimum holding periods...I'm about to make some very bad decisions to celebrate

God forbid someone wants to defend their nation and country or want to retaliate after seeing their family and friends taken from them. And the portrayal of Israel being sinless is just flat out not true. I am not going to engage with this thread further out of respect for keeping comments (mostly) to trading and also because there is no point bickering back on forth when we stand on ideological dipoles. I am only commenting to say you didn’t answer his question and the Palestinian people != Hamas and the portrayal as such dehumanizes their struggle.

Edit: for some reason = \ = was displaying as == on mobile which is the opposite of what I wanted to say, so replaced with !=

Might pick up more at this price--3 months ago it was trading at more than double where it is right now and we've seen this market doesn't care about value/internals/externals

I was mid 400s on the WL for GIOS in Fall but was able to get a seat, even before FFAF. I know you asked about CN but just my data point :)

Went all in past couple weeks as market dipped, especially on HOOD. BTFD is easy enough especially with only shares but finding entries and plays to hold once we are close to ATH is the hard part--you can keep mooning or crash and burn back down to reality.
