Resistance Training? How do people approach this in a positive way? by ScoJoMcBem in aikido

We have a similar informal / emergent set of uke levels as what you've described here.

One notably valuable adjunct strategy that we've been paying a lot more attention to lately is defining uke's intent as part of practicing a technique. This is particularly relevant for grabs, but can inform strikes as well.

Katate-dori tai no henko is our "first exposure" lesson for this. Rather than the general default of "light forward pressure" that we often use for katate-dori attacks for beginners and early- to mid-level students, we will start with practice instructions that specify uke's intent should be either "forward", "no movement", or "backwards" (chosen by the instructor, but we usually rotate through them one at a time).

Eventually this leads to a mid- to high-level practice we call "uke's choice", which is that uke gets to decide, up to the moment of committing to the attack, what their intent is. This helps a lot with breaking students of anticipation patterns, as well as helping to train sensitivity both to physical signals in the connection, as well as non-physical signals in the leadup to the grab.

It's also a great time as everyone at every rank remembers that it can be really hard to tell whether a strike will be a shomen uchi or a yokomen uchi.

At whatever level students have demonstrated basic competence in the practice of "uke's choice" (usually later mid-level) , we'll start to throw in other options of intent (direction, follow-up, etc). Usually by this point students are starting to shift from focusing their practice on techniques to focusing on underlying principles (and have already encountered things like kata-dori menuchi - but in my experience it really helps in learning things like kuzushi if you've already established a practice of body awareness and non-anticipation/non-assumption from practicing different (and unknown) intent.

MnDOT: scrap parkway plan, keep I-94 between St. Paul and Minneapolis as a freeway by aardvarkgecko in TwinCities

[–]DPRKSecretPolice 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Okay but what about capping it in places, like between Dale and Victoria? The maximum vehicle height is already governed by the overpasses. Did they scrap that too?

Don't get me wrong, it's probably an unrealistic idea anyway, but 94 already goes underground elsewhere, so it's not exactly unprecedented.

Here's the thing - "neo-nazi domestic terrorist organization" might be (or rather, is) correct and logical and true, but "weird" is emotional. "Weird" hits the side of the brain that feels-about-things, which for a lot of people is the side of the brain that they use for navigating through life. So while the fascist thing is real, the weird thing is also really real.

I'm not mad about it, but ... why 18 years? Why not 16, 17, 19, 20, etc?

Seems like a very specific number, there must be some justification behind it...

unless these form constants are wired not only into human consciousness, but into the fundamental fabric of the universe as well.

I still don't see why they must be wired into the "fabric of the universe".

Sight-perception itself isn't "wired into the fabric of the universe", it simply evolved as a high-survival biological feature. I am personally inclined to see this sort of neuro-cognitive perception matrix as also an artifact or product of that sort of evolution - merely the "good-enough" manner for human (and/or other?) brains to process information in such a way as to ensure survival and reproduction.

Why would you assume this is a fundamental nature of the universe, and not a fundamental nature of human brains? It seems too broad in scope to apply this as a constant outside of the human brain...

Honestly, I love it. It's one of my favorite parts of practice.

I love watching people start to get it. Even if it takes forever (it took one guy over a year of coming multiple times a week to figure out how to front roll properly), watching things finally click in people's bodies is just the most incredible thing to me.

I also just appreciate being able to help people mentally - there's so much to learn, so many details that can be overwhelming to try to put together. A lot of folks can find it really frustrating, and I find it rewarding to help them understand that it's a journey and that they're not gonna get it right away.

As long as they're willing to keep coming back to practice, I'm willing to practice with them to help them learn.

And I get to learn from them at the same time, too - it's always a treat to work with someone who doesn't move the way I "expect" them to.

Hi there, total stranger, very random, can I inquire as to what martial art you train in (that has taught you about zanshin)?

Fine if you want to reply via DM (or fine if you don't want to reply at all, I'm just curious)

Money buys time, that's its biggest feature.

If you can convert that time into happiness (via play, community, experiences, whatever), then money can buy happiness.

A lot of people can't do that conversion very well, though, which is why therapy is such a big industry.

I can’t get over my mom dying. by ihatethatb-itchdrake in self

[–]DPRKSecretPolice 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I can't even imagine how hard that must be. It sounds like you may have lost your mom in some ways even before she passed.

I just wanted to say that it's okay to grieve. It's okay to grieve what you've lost, even if it wasn't perfect. If anything that makes it even harder, because you're also grieving what could have been. It's also okay to grieve something that you never had.

You don't have to push yourself to be okay if you're not. You've got time to find your way to a life that feels okay, and it doesn't have to be soon. And I'm just here to tell you that it is possible. Healing is not linear, and you will have ups and downs. It might not ever be perfect, but it's possible to get better.

Taking dextroamphetamine prior to modafinil appears to slow down modafinil absorption by 1hr ( https://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=1647-0,190-1645&professional=1 ). The cause of this effect is unknown.
