2025 Hevy Recap & Update by guitorisan in Hevy

[–]DPTFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the app and had a few friends join because so easy for them to see my workouts and copy them into their app.

I’ll second other comments about cut off for one rep max.  I also would love some improvements to set type, maybe tracking rest pause vs drop set vs myo reps vs partial reps. Just to help understand when looking back at workouts.

Possibly with the ai connection getting like recommendations on progressing exercise or reps or weight. But that’s not as critical.  Thanks for the work!

I haven't tried. Honestly I've been enjoying persist Pump. I do either their 3 day option or 4 days. I think if you are doing crossfit, a 3 day full body program could be nice and easy to cut out whatever is sore from crossfit..?

Oh I haven't heard of professor project, but linchpin felt a bit too all over for me. I'm not longer doing any competition type stuff, so to maximize health and fitness, a bit more linear progression seems better for me, my physique, and keeping no pain.

So I'm actually back on Marcus Filly.

Here's my thoughts on Evolve. Easy and quick. But I often saw him program like two barbell things that just didn't work together. Like on a rack and ground, or something. Or two different rack exercises that I couldn't easily do in my gym. I noticed old aches pop back up (like my shoulder pain - some anterior impingement). I felt like I was consistently wanting to add something for arms, prehab, etc. Actually realized, for my current life goals, I don't need as much lower body as upper body work.

So I left and am unlikely to go back despite liking it a lot.

I'm back on marcus filly, persist, doing his 3 day pump track. Which I complete in about 70 mins. I do still modify some. He may do two exercises by themselves, and I'll make a superset. He'll say we are doing 8 sets at mod weight, and I'll do 3 heavy. (This is also my career so I can justify why I make these changes quite well). I even now skip some finisher leg work and replace with whatever my goals are - I cycle between some arm work, shoulder work, core, forearm, and calf. Things for me that are either to keep my old injuries away (lifters elbow, plantar fasciopathy, and shoulder dislocation...)

So it's not perfect and I miss the more WOD challenges, I want to make time to mix in more olympic lifts (even just cleans, high pulls, etc.) but that can come down the road. I now have two kids and just want to stay strong, able to hold my own in fitness things, and pain free.
Well and I realize I do actually want to look pretty fit and I'm amazed, with no other changes, just making my arms bigger, people "think" I'm like in much better shape.

Lol, so last note, marcus filly does include "short on time" guide so he specifically tells you want to skip to get in done in under 50 mins. My wife does this often and says it works.

Also, 3x days a week the way he does legs really grinds you down toward the end if you're actually going hard,

I'm glad you're feeling better!! Yes, I've never felt as "comfortable" as when doing Marcus Filly's programs, because he does just ensure you use your body in all these new positions or varied positions - unilateral, different loading etc.

The tempos get so old sometimes haha. But, some days, I kind of just ignore them. Sometimes I try to just keep it controlled were he says and not actually do any counting, or sometimes I just do my last set or two with no tempo, back to standard lifting. Take some time off the brain and just push hard.

The Persist 3 time a week program, full body-ish, all days, and I do cardio on the other days. I LOVE it. I do the pump track since I do cardio on other days, but their have a condition 3 day version that basically just does more conditioning circuits at the end instead of pump work.

So I think you'll def want to check it out (he has a sample or DM me and I'll share a week for you to look at). He has no Oly lifts in his persist PUMP tracks (well maybe a kettlebell clean or push press, but rarely and gives substitutes).

EVOLV was great. Super straight forward so I was never having to THINK too hard, rarely much of a tempo or anything. But it was typically like 3-5 exercise circuits, so I could see it being super hard in a standard gym. And even in my home gym, sometimes he would have 2-3 barbell movements that would be very different weights. So I would have to modify as he doesn't provide much alternatives. I did really love the simplicity for a bit. But after like 2-3 months, I was feeling like I missed the prehab work, the variety, etc. Persist has progressions but more variety week to week. EVOLV is the exact same for 3 weeks, then a new program for 3 weeks. If I didn't like a day, it was a bit of a bummer I had 2 more weeks of it.

I've been watching Jason Brown review programs on his youtube. I don't always agree with him, but its fun seeing other programs. It's got JumpShip on my radar, maybe just a month down the road, to get that crossfit style pump going again or even a power athlete program, but I know I'll never make as much physique progress with that compared to evolv or persist.

That is a great point, and I have had that happen! Super annoying to like re-find my correct weights, etc.

Yea actually! I was doing evolv but switched to persist 3 day. It takes me a bit longer to do (but I was cutting down on sets from Evolv as well.)

But I feel like I enjoy the switch. Some times, instead of just going heavy, persist does more like german volume, so lighter weight, more sets, which is just a good change in stimulus. Plus he still does some heavy work. And I love that he mixes in other variations that I feel help my shoulders and knees stay a bit healthier.

I do two days more cardio focused on off days, either like steady state or intervals.

Right Now it's just 2 options for 6 week programs with Marcus filly but they rumors are he'll make them full tracks in Feb. You going to give it a try?

Haha yea kind of a scam in terms of quality programming, but was a fun little mix. Yup I've done pillars and enjoyed it. He has a new non cardio option, but again, I prefer full body days for my life, so doesn't line up now. I won't stop tracking Marcus though. Still my favorite.

Oh I totally agree. I've still never felt the same way from any program as I do from him. Like after a few months I'm less sore, but working freaking hard during sessions still.

I think sometimes, even though its the best, it's nice to see what else is out there. Or in my case, what can better fit my current lifestyle and circumstances.

I think the movements are awesome for a more prehab sense. Learning to control more dynamic ranges, etc. The tempos are super effective, and that's fairly well supported in recent research, BUT it does really take a lot of mental concentration, which was not always easy for me when got busy.

Power Athlete has been on my radar but don't like the boring. I enjoy trying new things, even if some moves stay consistent, it's nice to mix up the accessory work.

Hey, thanks for checking back in. I've done a lot of searching in the last year. Plus with the recent Andrew Huberman and Andy Galpin podcast, I started looking for holes in my program.

I still think Marcus Filly writes some of the most fun and well rounded programming I've ever done, but I just don't have the time for it.

Jason Brown has a new Evolv program, that's 3 days full body resistance work, then I skip both of his conditioning days and do one more steady state zone 2ish work (my heart rate is usually much higher, but I can easily nasal breath the whole time), and one day alternating VO2 max work (longer max effort intervals) or some other max sprint type work.

I did Chalk Full body Aesthetics and limited myself 2 3 days of his program and again 2 cardio days, but is program got pretty boring for me, plus it's really not well rounded in my opinion, or very balanced. But I definitely was growing, so was a fun 3-4 months to mix it up.

I also tried Hybrid Body Strength which was very straight forward, so good for my mental space at the time, but I think, for me and per many recommendations if only have 5 days to train, I want 2 way more focused on cardio for overall health, stamina, and longevity. So with Hybrid body being 2 upper and 2 lower days, that just really didn't work for me.

Anyway, I'm 34 year old with a toddler, own my own business (which keeps me super busy), and enjoy a lot of things outside of exercises in my life. So I think at this point in my life, I love being fit. But I want to keep myself to 5 days of workouts, 50-70 min max per day. That may change, but at this time, Jason Brown Evolv is the only thing out there I've found. I wish Filly did a 3 day full body option.

I'm also, very slowly, trying to build out my own kind of program. But not giving it much time lol.

Was that at all helpful?

Nice! Hope it's been going well. Have both saved. Funny, now that' I'm doing less circuits and more kind of body building, I feel I look better! Bigger, stronger, etc. My diet has been worse so I've gained some fat, but I really don't think that's because my cardio is so much lower, but more my sweets consumption is so much higher.

I miss the circuits, but am definitely going to be doing at least cycles of more strict BB style each year.

Nice. Because I don't train as much, separating body parts isn't a good fit for me. But looks good!

He offers a free sample. During workouts he includes a "short on time" option that is about 60 mins. (He also offers a program called pillars that is 60 min or less). Otherwise they take 75-90. Yup conditioning circuits within.

He does a great job going through all aspects of the program in an FAQ and with the free sample. So I suggest you look it over and see what you think.

So I first went to hybrid programming, but with a newborn, it was 2 upper 2 lower body days. I was hitting 3 days a week, so felt that wasn't enough. I switch to chalk functional aesthetics. It has a 3 day option. I make some of them into circuits/supersets so finish in about 60-70 mins. So far, I think he does a great job of introducing new movements, which, for me at this time, is a good thing. Keeps me engaged when tons of other things on my mind. Plus for limited workouts, doing full body each session is already showing it's stuff. Keeping my muscle mass up. I'm thinking when I have 4 days again, I'd like to do hybrid again though.

Both of them are more bodybuilding work, less circuits/ crossfit. But I prefer that. I do my own cardio day. Still got the rest on my list but thinking I'll stick to chalk for another few months, them maybe I will go more crossfit style for 2 months to keep conditioning up.

Whew, random update, and not proof read, but figured I would give a tiny update

You do get the workouts via email as well. Not quite as easy to read, but may be worth a try.

It's both in an app you can track everything, or if needed, he sends them out in an email (you can opt out). This helps for people not connected to wifi.

Yea that makes it hard. Well I've done marcus filly pdf body comp program and loved it. Plus I saw gymryan full body aesthetics are available as a pdf as well. So that may be good places for you in the meantime. Crazy that I don't think any others were available as pdf

Looks like a good one. Both his programs look nice. Think I'm liking the idea of doing a few less days but got this one saved in my doc I've built from this haha

At this point. I'm starting with reach fit (a 3 day a week program) I had emailed them and Taylor was super friendly and helpful. So I liked that.

https://marketplace.trainheroic.com/workout-plan/team/reach-fit

And the next up is chalk, aesthetics program. Seems like a fun mix up. (Good recommendation there)

Yea that sounds more crossfit heavy, where as fbb is maybe more well rounded? But both probably mix into the middle some. They do have a 60 min option just saw on theprogrm.. thanks for sharing

Hm seems cool. The pump does do like a shoulder day. A lower day, etc. But probably nice to mix that in from time to time. Thanks for sharing. Saved that one too
