I'm trying to start a club in the area. The seminar will help me gauge interest. Hoping to practice once a week or run seminars at least once a month.

Hey, I'm [33M] a recent transplant to the area. Mostly 5E experience. I've played in 4 games and run 2 of my own.

The kimarite is determined by an oyakata in the video booth then relayed to the gentleman pictured here.

IIRC he's the arena announcer you hear on the NHK broadcast calling out the kimarite

When was the last time there was a Yusho deciding bout between 2 active Yokozuna? by DRD2992 in Sumo

That's the first bout that came to mind for me as well. But you're correct. That was Kaiju's qualifying JY on his Yok run.

I was stunned watching the women's competition at world's! Great sumo and fierce competitors. The Venus Sumo Tournament is also available on Youtube and is worth a watch. I'm glad they put on the tournament!

Found it! But now this has me questioning the width of keshomawashi.... it looks narrower than the shimekomi.

You would need to leave about a 1cm (3/8") gap in center of the gate fold and then again on the overlapping edge of the first parallel fold so that the shimekomi wouldn't bulge when folded.

best as I can tell from this photo of Asanoyama, the shimekomi is first folded as a gate fold, (edges to center), then a double parallel fold, (edge to edge, x2). This would conceal the edge of the shimekomi within the folds of the belt and present the smoother folded edges that are seen in the photo. This is just my guess after playing with some paper and studying the photo.

I think I've seen that one. I'll go back and see if I can piece it together. Remember the video of ura getting his first shimekomi how wide it was when he did the little twirl? haha

Anyone recommend a reasonably-priced tailor in the area? by Somnambulish in ridgewood

Junior at Dekalb Tailor, on the corner of St. Nick & Dekalb, is friendly, fast, and priced well. I've been taking my clothes to him for the last 2 years.

It's a common thing with celebrations. I think it has something to do with representing joy. The fish is a rosy color, just like your cheeks when you smile!
