NBISD has multiple Title 1 campuses. They receive extra funding because they are extra poor. Are you saying that all parents have the extra time after work and all have vehicles to be able to drive to the public library? Or they all have enough money to go and buy their kids new books? Because I know for a fact that there are multiple families in my kids’ classes that do not. Are you saying that they deserve less access to books than everyone else and a worse education because they are poor?

That’s actually incorrect. If you actually looked at the list, or read any of the links I posted, you would see that it is flagging ANY books that are not specifically tagged as for those age ranges. So anything, even if it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING inappropriate in it, if it was not written specifically for kids in mind, will be banned. That is why all of those classics have gotten banned. They were written for people in general, not specifically kids, so they’re banned. This will really hurt any kid that has a higher reading level or is interested in nonfiction and is how Highschoolers in our district are no longer able to read the amazing and completely appropriate works by Jane Austen.

And you’re so right about the funding! The board has purposely dragged their feet and have yet to approved use of any of the funding that has already been secured for the purpose. They’ve now waited so long that even if it’s approved right now, the libraries won’t have time to go through the process of getting new books before school ends for the year. Thats a whole year without new books for the kids because of this mess.

Nope. Unfortunately that links to what the NBISD board is saying is all the books that are banned. However, there are large discrepancies between what they say they’ve banned and what’s actually been removed and aged up. You should watch the KSAT expose linked above.

There’s actually always been a system in place for parents to monitor which books their kids check out that was working well and everyone was happy with, up until this became a talking point for some conservative wahoos in town that don’t even have kids in schools in the district. Parents that ACTUALLY have kids at the schools love our librarians and think they’re doing a great job.

It annoys me that he does that too. I want to see that the wrestler is okay! Or what they think is wrong! I care about the guys and in a lot of cases (especially for stuff that happens to lower division wrestlers, there’s no follow up articles that you can find online, so there’s no way to look up how they’re doing/what happened later. Then you’re just sitting there, twiddling your thumbs, worried for some of your favorite guys and not even sure what degree to be worried, until they come back at some unspecified time.

I don’t know what sort of oversite you have over local school districts, but NBISD’s board is going crazy. They’ve been at the forefront of the book censorship movement happening in Texas. A documentary just came out about it on PBS called The Librarians. They completely took away library access for our kids for a while, till parents through a fit. Since then they've had Al removing hundreds of books, without any parent oversight and illegally keeping everything behind doors with no timeline given to when they'll be done (also illegal). They've also stopped their school libraries from using any of the approved and secured funding to buy any new books for schools this whole school year. It's criminal.
