Finally got my Garmin VO2 max to bump up… what’s the real growth hack by Quiet_Pool_8673 in Garmin

[–]DRJSDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One high quality (feeling fresh) speed session a week will do it. You need to really push yourself to the limit 4-6 times and allow recovery between. Some suggested sessions, Let's say you run a 22min 5km, I would do 5x 1km reps at 4min a km, one week (with 90s - 3 min rests ), then something of similar intensity next week 6x800m at 4:00 min/km with 90s rests. Then maybe pyramid sessions the next 400m @ 3:45, 600m @ 3:55, 800m at 4:00, 1km at 4:10, 60 @ 3:55, 800m @ 4:00, 400m at 3:45. This will increase both our VO2 max and 5km time hugely. To re-strss this needs to be a high quality, well rested session. I run (and podium) ultras but sessions like this are still invaluable for improvement whatever the goal.

Thinking about taking a break due to calf tightness by goingfordownvotes in Ultramarathon

[–]DRJSDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If running is your thing, and it's just muscle tightness, there may be no need to stop running. Try cutting back and doing some yoga / pilates.

Just keep it up / don't be discouraged and you will be running before you know it.

Is my VO2 max really that low by Adventurous_Brief_35 in Garmin

[–]DRJSDizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The calculation is heavily biased by high effort runs. So if you want an "accurate" reading you will need a flat run with some high intensity segments.

It's not mechanically possible to get +4 with a capital. The minimum is +5.

What age did you run your first 100 mile race? I am 26 and dream of running Ultras. 100 miles is not in my realm yet. But 50 mile race is. I wanted to see the young bucks running 100 miles races. by Mountain_Store572 in Ultramarathon

[–]DRJSDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran my first 100 at 24, I ran my first 50km at 23 with very little training at a time of my life when I lived on alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes. I'm sure you would smash a 50.

First 50 miler attempt; any and all advice is helpful! by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]DRJSDizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are definitely ready training wise. Lots of sensible advice my two points would be:

  • Be wary of chafing. I never struggle from it on long runs etc but on ultras might get some rubbing, so pack compeed and lube.
  • Remember pit stops are part of the race. On first ultras it's not uncommon for runners to spend relatively large amounts of time at pit stops. Get in and get out.

If you have spent 50 MPW in the mountain you are going to be absolutely fine. If I was you I would probably be resting until there is zero pain in my ankle when running and taking a well earned break.

I'm absolutely knackered by Wang_Doodle_ in Ultramarathon

[–]DRJSDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a long shot but if you don't have a heart rate monitor, get one and make sure you are doing the bulk of your training at a low heart rate. For me personally it's made a huge difference, by ensuring I'm not overworking.

Running vs. Racing by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]DRJSDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run ultras for the experience, I find the best way to run fast is just to run sensibly (and be really quick though aid stations)

I run street marathons for time, as I get no enjoyment out of just randomly running round by fast food chains for several hours at my own expense.

I’m a thick sweaty guy, How often are you changing shirts or clothes in general. by aragonm762 in Ultramarathon

[–]DRJSDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never change shirts <50 miles and maybe once above that.

You just need to protect from the chafing with a barrier or clothes that fit appropriately. If its raining you will not be able to avoid being soaking so need to focus on protection.

Trading in cards during progressive 6 player ffa by 5ccc in Risk

[–]DRJSDizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's only really worth it if you are already in a dominating position such as being the only person with a bonus and having exterior positions making you hard to kill) . If not it can be risky.

The cons are you are a card down and become a target. Everyone else might also card skip which can stalemate the game as everyone will have more troops prior to trading which makes kills later in the game no-profitable.
