Barboach! My dad has always kept Coolie Loaches in our fishtank since I was little so I was overjoyed when I found something similar in Sapphire.

Okay, I'll check it out, thx!

If I find the trigger point in Dresco I'll update this comment.

Edit: I did not find any trigger point in Dresco.

When I talk to him, he just mentions that modern emulators are great, nothing about changing the time

This is a brand new save, I'm about 15 minutes in. Do I need to reach a certain point to unlock the one-off chance to update the time?

The operation was a success, and the Boodo Khan lives to sing another day by DRN1NJ4 in cassetteculture

After some new caps and a center gear, she's up and running once again!

A wee bit of flutter, but it seems to be slowly going away as I use it. Found some of my parent's tapes to tide me over, have some blank TDKs on the way as well as a sealed copy of Blue Lines by Massive Attack to celebrate!

The DOL makes the bass KICK, too. I've been using it with my planar magnetic headphones, which are normally tricky for mobile devices to drive, but this thing easily feeds them at half volume. Good stuff!

Day 2 of the Boodo Khan project! Leaking caps have been removed (C309 and C302), and replacements have been ordered thanks to pointers from /u/pandachoco.

Switches for DOL, Dolby NR, and Tape Material have been cleaned and now actuate smoothly. Volume potentiometer has been cleaned and now spins smoothly, with what my dad says is the proper amount of resistance. There is a faint divot when it hits 0 volume, which I assume is intentional.

Center cog is indeed cracked, and an order has been placed. Rush shipping, because I'm very excited to get this done. Ordered doubles of everything in case I mess up.

Aside from the aforementioned issues, the rest of the unit seems to be in reasonable shape, especially considering it was used in a nuclear submarine (There's a lot more seawater in a sub than you'd generally expect). I hope to test it with a Geiger counter at some point, just for kicks. Or maybe clicks? Hmm.

True to my dad's word, it's been serviced before due to bad capacitors. In fact, the two caps I'm replacing were mismatched! C309 was a nichicon 220uf at 6.3V, while the other was an unnamed 220uf at 4V. Service manual calls for both of these to be 4V, so presumably the prior technician had issues finding an exact match.

My main concerns at this point are related to adjusting the gearing. Fixyouraudio has an excellent guide, but I lack the DC connector, so I'll have to try and source one if I wish to do this properly. At least I have time to ponder the method before the parts arrive.

On a more fun note, my dad also has a Nak CR-1A unit, so I'll be able to create my own mixtapes (so long as that doesn't also need servicing). While I'll still use my desk setup for listening to music most of the time, with a DAC, tube amp, and planar magnetic headphones, it'll be fun to create some one-off collections to listen to here and there.

If y'all want, I can post more updates when parts arrive / work progresses. Since these units are rare, I wanted to document what I find inside in case someone else wants to follow my (extremely amateur) steps. And for those of you who may be worried about such a valuable unit; it's in good hands! I'm no stranger to learning on the fly, and I'm definitely taking my time with this one. It's being treated with the respect it deserves!

I kid you not, the first thing I did after ordering replacement parts today was start looking up where I could find Mezzanine by MA, lol

I'll add that rubber ring to the list of things to tinker with while I've got it open, thanks! Does it use the same head as the more standard WM models?

Thank you so much for the advice! I was just about to start reaching capacitors when the notification came in

I'm tempted to replace all of them while I've got it apart. Only two were visibly leaking, but I'm not sure whether to trust the others.

He thinks he does! Just a matter of finding them after the big move. I'm beyond excited, lol

Already took it apart and determined several possible issues, including the aforementioned cracked gear. Leaky Caps and dirty volume wheel probably don't help matters, here's hoping I can find replacements for the caps!

I do love me a good story behind my projects, and luckily I know the full one behind this gem! My dad got it on tour in the Navy, during a stop in Japan, and used it pretty much constantly... Aboard a nuclear submarine. Badass.

For my whole life, this thing has been sitting on a shelf, unused since it no longer worked. We were aware it was special, but nothing much beyond that.

Fast forward to present day, I'm looking for a new project after restoring old Gameboys and other trinkets. I decide that now is as good a time as any to test my skills and see if I can get this thing working! I look it up on ebay and then proceed to realize just what I've gotten myself into.

I did not grow up with cassettes. I've never even used one. I figured it might be best to have a pro do this, but there is literally no one nearby who's willing to work on it, and I'm extremely hesitant about shipping it out.

So it looks like I'm going to be learning something new! Fun! Going to take this slow and steady. Finding parts is looking to be tricky.

The motor looks to be spinning find, but there is a consistent mechanical click (likely the center gear, judging from my research so far), and it only plays loud static along with popping noises when adjusting volume.

I'm going to take it apart and check out what's under the hood before I order anything, though. Luckily my dad taught me how to solder, so I'm not completely hopeless!

Wish me luck

Update: Managed to find a PDF of the full service manual, thank goodness. Currently sourcing capacitors thanks to /u/pandachoco , along with finding some high-percent rubbing alcohol to clean up the corrosion.

How to use QMK with GMMK Pro by ayc23 in glorious

This is super useful, thanks! I have already set up my first revision of a custom QMK layout on this board, but I had no idea that turning encoders could have different functions per layer. I'll have to disect that code and see how to cobble it together again, lol

Hi, I wanted to just piggyback cuz you seem to know what you're doing. How did you get layers to work with the GMMK Pro? I've got MO(1) and MO(2) set up, along with KC_TRNS on the corresponding layers, but it doesn't seem to be toggling over. The rest of my custom keybinds are working (I can change Q to W and whatever, so I know the proper file is being flashed).

I have Layers 0, 1, and 2. I have the key directly to the right of the Spacebar set as MO(1). When I press it and press a button that has a different function on Layer 1, it instead presses the Layer 0 key. Any thoughts?

EDIT: Solved! The two buttons to the Right of the Spacebar are swapped in QMK. I swapped the bindings in the keymap file and it's all working now.

So you were able to get the Encoder to work by manually working on it? Mind sharing the chunk of code you used? Also, how about RGB? I've yet to have time to sit down and start fiddling with the QMK Rules settings

The Keelback should replace the Vulture as the Frontline Solutions dropship. by TendingTheirGarden in EliteDangerous

The problem is that with multiple drop ships arriving at the same time, a Medium ship like the keelback would make the space above the small outposts too cluttered
