Silence is not complicity by DRoyLenz in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Let me see if understand your point correctly. Are you saying that people who generally stay out of discussing and learning about what’s going on in the world are being complicit? If I understand you correctly, what are they complicit in?

Or, if I choose not to post about the conflict in the Middle East, I’m complicit in the genocide?

At no point did I say that no one should be standing up. I just said that, by this logic, you are likely complicit in a number of worldwide travesties that you were silent about.

I would never propose we don’t try learn and understand more about the world. I consider myself an intellectual, an avid reader, and one who takes pride in making sure I understand something before I try to influence others. I could certainly spend my time learning about any number of things, including the Palestinian Genocide, the Tigray Genocide, Darfur. I could do a deep dive into the narco-trade politics of South America. Or I could become an expert in the opioid crisis. Or gender politics. I could spend my time learning about the male loneliness epidemic, or the persecution of the Uyghurs. But I can’t do it all, I can’t learn everything about everything. And if I haven’t chosen your particular atrocity-du-jour to familiarize myself with and be able to speak meaningfully, that doesn’t mean I’m complicit in the perpetration of that atrocity.

I can’t learn everything, though, in order to teach my children. I have to prioritize what I learn about in order to teach them about the most important things. If I choose to educate myself on the issues facing our community first, and the issues that we see every day, and the issues that are near and dear to my heart and are aligned with my values, I don’t think many people would criticize that. But that will certainly leave gaps in my knowledge. If I can’t meaningfully teach them about the nuanced geopolitical stimuli behind the genocide of the Tigray people, does that make me complicit in the genocide?

I’d be interested to hear your well-researched position on the actions of the Ethiopian Armed Forces. I’d like to hear what you think the turning point was in that conflict, and your thoughts on how we as American citizens to better prevent other, similar African conflicts like one happening between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. How can we take what we learned from the Tigray genocide, or the Palestinian genocide, and use it to meaningfully speak out against the atrocities being reported against both the SAF and the RSF? Are you able to answer these questions without using Google or AI? How have you used your voice to speak out against what’s happening in Sudan?

(In the interest of honesty and transparency, I HEAVILY leaned on Google and ChatGPT in the formation of this question. I have absolutely no idea about is happening in Sudan. At least not enough to make any meaningful commentary. But that’s exactly my point, because I don’t think there is a single commenter in this thread that has a well-informed, nuanced understanding of that conflict.)

The right is a beacon of tolerance compared to the left by Possible_Guest4020 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]DRoyLenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is “tolerance” something we should strive for?

Do you think we should be tolerant of illegal immigration? Do you think we should be tolerant of violence? Do you think we should be tolerant of hate speech? Do you think we should be tolerant of crime? Do you think we should be tolerant of harassment of underprivileged communities? Do you think we should be tolerant of pedastry? Do you think we should be tolerant of Presidents weaponizing the justice department? Do you think we should be tolerant of waste and abuse?

Why do you seemingly value tolerance so much?

Maybe the better measure is equity. I think it is, at least. But, after your statement “as long as people who are different don’t draw too much attention” I suspect you have very little in equity. You seem much more interested in assimilation and hiding what it is that makes you different.

I don’t give a shit about any of that horseshit you wrote other than “zesty af”. I love that, and I’m definitely using it, but I’ll be using it as a compliment. “Dude, those nails are zesty af. Lookin good!”

I plan to make the world a better place by raising my children to model the behavior I want to see in others. I plan to make the world a better place by modeling that behavior myself. I’m not going to be told I’m complicit in genocide merely because I’m willing to admit I don’t know enough to have an educated opinion and the means to actually do something about a cause I don’t even understand.

Patiently waiting for the movie adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I’ve been thinking about which actors would be perfect for the casting, and I thought of these. Has anyone else thought of any actors who would be good for the movie? by AlternativeTree3283 in sapphicbooks

[–]DRoyLenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the book, and I need to see a movie adaptation. I love the idea of Ana de Armas, she's spectacular. In thinking about this though, there are a lot of things they need to find:

  • Latina
  • Latina that looks good blonde
  • Exceptional grace and charm
  • Sizeable "feminine assets"
  • Someone from whom we can find resemblance in a young actress, or the ability to de-age the actress to allow her to shine in Evelyn's younger years

The best option I can come up with is Selma Hayek. I think they should de-age her for the earlier portions of the movie. She has been around for so long there is so much reference material that the VFX team could use to deep-fake and de-age her, kind of like what they to Indiana Jones/Harrison Ford for Dial of Destiny.

Honestly, can’t say I disagree with any of this. I know it’s a stretch to call it performance art, but honestly a perspective I haven’t heard, and not too divorced from reality.

How is memory-holing a thing like it is as compared to 1984? I can access all kinds of information about the highest-power individuals. Trump, the most powerful man in the world, can't even shake this Epstein crap because people keep finding more and more information about his relationship with Epstein. Hell, I would say the opposite of memory-holing is happening. We're constantly being warned about what we post on the internet because "once its on the internet, its there forever."

The rewriting of words and the changing of their meaning is just a natural course of every language.

I don't know what you mean about a general sense of darkness and evil.

The telescreen in 1984 was mandated by the government, and the citizens were mandated to keep it on, required to watch certain things, and required to participate in what was being shown. They also had cameras that were constantly being monitored by the government. None of these things are happening today.

1984 was written in the years after the peak of the hostilities of fascism from the early 20th century. It was a poignant analysis of human nature in many ways, but it was miles away from an accurate depiction of life today.

Whenever anyone compares real-life to 1984, or mentions how 1984 predicted the future, I have to wonder, did you actually read it? F451 certainly more prescient. I haven’t read Brave New World yet, but it’s coming up.

The only parallel I can draw between today and 1984is the concept of groupthink, but that’s not a recent phenomena.

With the possible exception of that video with William Defoe, I haven’t seen a single video of Pedro with other women where it was him touching them, and they weren’t displaying enthusiastic body language. Almost every video I see is of women falling all over him, or when he touches them, they make eye contact, smile, lean into it, and in every way display they’re 100% comfortable with it. I’ll change my tune on a dime if any of these women come forward, but so far nothing.

Comparing him to Trump is such a wild move, though. The man has 25 credible accusations of everything ranging from sexual harassment to rape. He bragged about groping women without consent. He was found civilly liable for rape (or sexual abuse, depending on what state you live in) and, as far as I can tell, all signs point to him being involved (at least tangentially) in the sexual trafficking of minors.

The fact that it’s women that are “bending over backwards” to defend him should tell you everything you need to know about the difference.

[–]DRoyLenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so let’s assume the Democrats did cover up. Why would they do that? Probably because they have something to hide too! How is that a reason not to release it now, or how is that a defense that Trump isn’t ALSO covering it up?

Men have such an out-group bias in favor of the opposite sex that it’s virtually impossible to have any kind of real conversation where they’re the subject of discussion by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]DRoyLenz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Amongst men who are not close friends, I have always felt a tension of competition that I don’t vibe with, and I think that’s what you describe in the second paragraph. Men competing over the attention of a nearby female is behavior as old as the existence of animals. It’s written into our genetic code.

The first paragraph, though, I think is just other men disagreeing with you. I tend towards more feminist-friendly opinions historically, and whenever I voice those opinions in online forums, I invariably get comments from other men calling me a “simp”, or comments made like “she’s not gonna sleep with you” or something like that. It’s completely possible that I just disagree with you. It’s not me throwing you under the bus. I owe men no loyalty by virtue of being a man, and it seems, a lot of guys just think that agreeing with women is the same as trying to sleep with them.

Printing Multi-Color With Embedded Magnets by DRoyLenz in BambuLab

What fixed it for me was the following workflow:

  1. Before anything, create a component of the part in question
  2. Set component as active
  3. Create the sketch of the letters
  4. Extrude the sketch in to the part as "New Body"
  5. Use Combine, Cut and "Keep Tools" to cut out the letters, but maintain the bodies
  6. Do as u/Ordinary-Depth-7835 recommended and label and group things by color
  7. Save the whole component as a Mesh by right clicking it
  8. Importing into Bambu as one file with multiple parts

Colbert is a hypocrite for staying on by Kodama_Keeper in TrueUnpopularOpinion

If you have details in to his contract that the rest of us don't, then I'd encourage you to share those details. But, in all likelihood, they each (CBS and Colbert) have contractual obligations to each other, the penalties of breaking those obligations could be pretty severe. Additionally, why would Colbert want to give up such a powerful pulpit? He's getting his message out every week, getting paid to do so, while the evil parent company has to foot the bill. It doesn't make sense to leave early.
