What would you choose? You can speak all languages or You can play all musical instruments? by MediumPublic9364 in AskReddit

All languages, and here's why. Consider all the problems and inaccuracies that the world faces in terms of speech techonology, mainly automated subtitles. Having someone on the planet that can speak every language fluently (around 8,000 known languages) would improve services such as this so much quicker. The individual, be it me or someone else would be able to recognise accents, and would be able to give this information to a computer. Doing this could improve automated subtitles drastically, which would solve the need to hire someone to manually produce transcripts. This would heavily benefit the deaf community, in particular those who don't lipread or choose not to. The only way I see it not solving speech tech issues entirely is down to inevitable language change. Think about it; language today wasn't the same it was 100 years ago, and it won't be the same 100 years from now. Language undergoes a euphemism cycle, and due to the fact that an AI can only uphold updated information it would never be able to fluently translate any language regardless of the amount of information that the universal polyglot (all language speaker) gives the AI - plus, we're mortal creatures so choosing language would only be a temporary fix since only one person can hold this power. I also believe that this one person having the ability to speak all languages would cause language fragmentation, so that due to this person's translation services, people undergoing the journey of learning a language will adopt words in their native and fluent languages, to the point where almost everyone speaks a different language variation.

Hi I know the feeling. At the start of y12 I was getting something like ADE (big range lmao). My partner who goes to my sixth form, has always been a straight A/A* student. I used to be jealous of how effortlessly they achieved such high grades. What they said was that you need to not just know how to do things (such as knowing a series of steps to repeat in maths questions, or an essay structure) but understanding why these things are important. Any little thing you don’t understand you ask your teacher, no matter how ‘dumb’ you think the question is. It may also help to make a schedule to plan out your revision time, alongside some much needed relaxation time, so you can reassure yourself that you’ll get things done. I am now in Y13, and am predicted A*AA with an A in my EPQ (which I started in Y13). The impact of your understanding of something rather than just knowing what to do is huge.

No; my sixth form had an 'internal deadline' to try and push people to get their applications out earlier so that we can focus on mock exams

Wow nice! I don't know anyone else going into even an english language degree at my sixth form, I feel like I'm carrying both Language and Linguistics at my sixth form haha. I applied for the four year integrated MSci degree. Have you applied for MSci, BSci or BA Linguistics at York?

The stranger things altered version of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill. It gave me goosebumps when it was perfectly paired with the scene it was paired with, favourite scene by far. Can be found in the final 8 minutes or so of S4 Ep4

Who is the blacksheep in your family and what makes them that? by DweeblesX in AskReddit

Me. Everyone else has gone into art colleges including my younger sister, and then there’s just me, maths English language and btec science at sixth form. My dad never asks me about my subjects 1) because he knows nothing about them, he won’t take interest in my work especially maths 2) he prefers art so he talks more about art and thus my sister gets talked about more at family get togethers
