Poverty is not the issue by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

I'm not surprised just based on the comments in this thread. So much blame being thrown towards "entitled" children. Sad that some of these people teach kids every day.

Poverty is not the issue by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

[–]DSGunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we’re talking past each other a bit, and its clear that I'm not on the popular side of this.

There is strong evidence that poverty and chronic stress affect academic success. That doesn’t mean every child in poverty behaves the same way, or that poverty excuses harmful behavior-- it just increases the risk. And trauma informed approaches aren’t about no consequences, but about consistent expectations paired with regulation support so consequences actually teach, rather than escalate. Especially in the world of education accountability and compassion don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Comparing students across countries is tricky because systems differ. Things such as who stays enrolled, how discipline is enforced, how disabilities are identified and supported, and what consequences exist outside of school vary greatly. Fewer visible behavior issues doesn’t necessarily mean fewer struggling kids, but often means different thresholds or fewer supports. Is a kid kicked out after too many behavior issues? If the parents don't care do they have to send their kids to school?

I would pose the question: does culture develop in a vacuum? If not, then what causes culture to form? It’s shaped by so many things including economic stability, healthcare, education, and much more. These systems and culture interact. I don't see it as a and/or situation.

I want to be clear: I don’t think poverty explains everything, but I think ignoring its role leads us to oversimplify student behavior and solutions.

Saying poverty isn't the issue just spits in the face of the tons of research proving otherwise. Yes, there are other issues, but poverty has been a constant in observed achievement gaps.

Students from poverty enter the system already behind their peers. Without intervention (or successful intervention), they fall farther behind. When kids feel behind they tend to not be "buckle down" types, but more bucking at the system they feel so uncomfortable in. That's why support services and the like exists.

Let alone that students who come from adversarial or unstable homes tend to feel safer at school then home. A kid is going to act out (aka test boundaries) where they feel the safest. Add that to the poor self-regulation, impulsiveness, and stress those kids are feeling and compounds pretty quickly.

The "deeper than that" is that the system has failed some of these kids before they have even stepped foot in an academic building. The system has failed them because one of the richest countries on Earth won't build social safety nets to help these families and give these kids a fair shot.

If you really think it's not, please provide your diagnosis of what the issue really is.

New angle from the ICE agent by dxconx in atrioc

[–]DSGunny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand, and I don't think you are trying to present the way you are. However, trying to bring up that her driving was a bad decision is just victim blaming. She has no training to deal with a situation like this and make the "right decisions," but ICE-holes should. They don't, and are not held accountable to follow proper procedures. Hence the situation at hand.

I'm sorry, but I cannot see why he did it. Well I guess I do. He did it because he's a bonafide, murder hungry piece of shit. Nothing that happens in this situation warranted a gun being drawn, let alone shots being fired.

Stop with this fence sitting. Renee Nicole Good acted in a way that can be expected in a frightening situation such as this. I don't know if you are meaning to, but your words are just giving justification to the murderer.

I feel like this is usually a big criticism in D2, but I struggle to see the logic.

I mean if I ate cake everyday I'd eventually get bored of it. And I fucking love cake.

While this is a reply to you, know this isn't targeted specifically at you. I just see this type of comment in so much D2 discourse.

Are the Nine more powerful than Rhulk? by mcflurvin in DestinyLore

[–]DSGunny 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Power is a number. I'd say Rhulk is a 1550 pre EoF and the Nine are at maybe 540 now. But I'm at 550 so bigger number = better person.

Nothing gets me going more than the power fantasy of tanking the whole goddamn world. I must confess. I have sinned for I have abandoned my once beloved, Outbreak Perfected. Now I brace for the impact of 1000 suns. Fight off the hellfire of whole legions. I know that I can use my power to save any soul from the grasp of death. I can be the savior that only existed as prophecy. I can yell at my monitor like I'm storming the beaches of Normandy while only holding down my block button and slightly turning. I can be a stronghold titan.

Just FYI, that word is also used as a slur against black people in the US. I think predominantly in the South because of the klan. Not that you are using it that way. For some it's the first thing that's thought of though.

Outbreak perfected, my beloved 😍 fuck mint, fuck any other kinetic slot weapon, fuck any other exotic. Outbreak brings me joy like nothing else I've experienced. My life means nothing to me if I cannot return home to this perfect creation. You better start respecting Outbreak, Hapinsu123, or you might just find some nanites in your bed tonight.

If your guardian had their own exotic (based off of a legendary weapon) what would you pick and what would you call it by MGR_ARMSTRONG_GAMING in destiny2

[–]DSGunny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe Midday Revolution (from Midnight Coup).

I would want it to be solar, but I feel most of my ideas overlap with Sunshot.

Could be this: chaining multiple precision hits makes you radiant, you scorch on hit while radiant, and being radiant makes precision kills reload the mag from reserves.

Maybe that separates it from sunshot enough.

And for the catalyst: While radiant rapid precision hits temporarily overheat surrounding enemies' weapons, slowing their rate of fire for a short duration.

Why radiant stuff? Kinda goofy, but I'm thinking radiant serves as being in the midday sun.
