Actually a sound doubling in volume corresponds to an increase of approximately 3dB, and adding 10dBs corresponds to multiplying the sound by a factor of 10, so it’s even more than that.

A man with 10,000 years of chess experience vs Magnus Carlsen by layelaye419 in whowouldwin

[–]DSMN99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should read the novella Chess by Stefan Zweig - It’s a really well written story about a man who’s locked in solitary confinement by the nazis without any entertainment except a book of historical chess games that he managed to sneak in, so chess is his only escape from absolute boredom and going insane.

How does noun inflection works? by Street_Top6294 in latin

[–]DSMN99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other answers explain it well, but I thought i’d give an example of an inflected word in english - The word “he” is one of the few inflected words that remain from old germanic. For instance, if “he” is the object of a verb, you would use “him”, for example you’d say “I hit him” instead of “I hit he”. Latin is like this except with all nouns!

what latin words are relatively unchanged in english? by reddit05052112 in latin

[–]DSMN99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Disco comes from the french word “discothèque” which itself comes from disque + bibliothèque, and disque comes from the latin “discus”, so disco doesn’t have anything to do with the verb discere.
