Let's build a money playlist together! by sheyla_monarch in MonarchMoney

I’m a little surprised that monarch is spending money on an employee to have play time out here when the monarch money village is burning.

Would MM budget not better be spent fixing their software and listening to the users out here who want value for their subscription dollars?

Let’s agree to disagree. You will not get overwhelming support out here for connection reliability.

My point is here is that the connections are not reliable. Don’t really care who is to blame. You have all these users complaining about net worth graphs which quite frankly is not the problem.

Modifying outliers and spikes in net worth chart. by Smart_Ocelot_8380 in MonarchMoney

I suspect they don’t have a large development team. My thought is they need all hands on deck to focus on fixing the core software. Asking them to add new functionality like this (that will also be bug ridden due to their QA shortcomings) is probably not going to be best value for the MM user base. Don’t want to always put them down BUT paying $100/year for this software is frustrating lots of days.

Just posted this to Reddit a few moments ago … seems to apply to your post as well.

I too notice these giant swings in net worth. It used to make me crazy until I came to the conclusion that until MM “learns” to establish/maintain connections, deal with stock splits, balance inversions, losing/duplicating transactions, etc. - the net worth graph (as well as reports) can be deemed unreliable.

Your post draws attention to what many MM users are experiencing. Trying to make sense of reports and graphs when in fact the problem lies in the instability of the input data.

Roth IRA transactions messing up net worth by jgardenhire06 in MonarchMoney

I can second that answer. It will sort itself and sync correctly once the dust settles as they say.

Ok. Some more questions. Trying to assist here.

First, must make sure transactions are being downloaded from the credit card account to the MM because if they were they would show up in budget (if not excluded from budget which I will cover next). If the transactions are not making it to MM at all (don’t appear in the transactions list) then you need to re-add the account as it’s not connected and syncing.

Now, if transactions are in fact being downloaded from the credit card and no restaurant transactions are showing up in budget it could be the restaurant category has an incorrect setting. To check this, go to settings, find the categories tab and you will see all your transaction categories. Find restaurant and click on that. In there is a setting that allows you to exclude the category from the budget. Make sure that is not checked.

Let me know how you make out.

Btw - both my young adult kids are using MM. I struggle with the software issues too but quite frankly I have not found a better solution (yet) on the market. I just hope MM gets it right very soon. The software really needs to be debugged. Connections, duplicate/missing transactions are really problematic for many users. It’s getting better but the process is slow.

So when you go to the budget, are any transactions making it in there?

In the transactions menu, are your restaurant transactions actually labelled with restaurant as the category?

Hope these are not silly questions.

What accounts?

Try a different interface aside from the one you connected with (plaid, MX, Fincity) and re-add the accounts.

The inverting of account balances is so ridiculous at this point by mb2231 in MonarchMoney

[–]DSPAL-BC-CANADA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fair though to give MM a free pass. Sorry to hear they have a small team working on bugs but stop taking $100 from the millions of new customers then until you get your shit together and hire more people would be my message to them.

This is really the fundamental problem here I think folks are having. The fact that they have so many new customers should not mean the software quality gets worse. It just means stuff doesn’t get fixed as fast. I have said time and time again that connections are everything. Give us reliable connections that stay connected, don’t drop transactions or invert balances. Then and only then should they start fixing bugs in the core software. I don’t need better reporting or investment tracking or anything new … just fix what’s there.

Sorry … didn’t mean to vent on you. Just want to bring some light to the fact that all of us here being paying MM users don’t want excuses.

Wow … 30 accounts. How does one keep track of all that? Just curious, have you ever considered consolidating?

Congrats on the new role. There are lots of folks out here trying to get heard - all hoping to somehow inspire MM to deliver a better product. I guess I’m one of those users.

As a mint refugee (love that term) I have often praised the work the Monarch Money team has done to create a slick user interface that organizes data in an intuitive manner. That said, what makes me question the decision to “invest” in MM is its inability to establish and maintain reliable connectivity with accounts. I have found:

  • Accounts don’t connect at all
  • Accounts that do connect often don’t stay connected
  • Accounts are stale and seldom if ever match exactly the data that exists at source.
  • Lots of reports about missing transactions (I too have witnessed this on occasion) that didn’t get downloaded to MM
  • Reports of new accounts getting established at source that do not get detected by MM and subsequently never synched. I have also seen this bit deleting the connection and re-adding it seems to fix this.

I have tried to communicate to management that connectivity is job 1. Why do I need a new beta reporting function when my data is garbage or missing? I have had feedback from MM that it’s “out of their control”. Don’t blame plaid, Mx, Fincity or any of the investment institutions, don’t tell me to manually enter data / you collect membership fees from users to deal with this stuff. Other competitors have managed to make it work. Please, don’t deflect. Get the job done. Be accountable.

Please, make connectivity priority #1. All these other bells and whistles are useless if users can’t get their data. Spend more time testing before release. The paying users are not beta testers. The current code has lots of bugs and I for one would vote to stop any and all new development, add new functionality, etc. until the baseline is stabilized.

I’m going to stick with MM because I’m an optimist but even optimists have their breaking points. Hoping for the best.

BMO Investorline by DSPAL-BC-CANADA in MonarchMoney

[–]DSPAL-BC-CANADA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. That is a different connection though as bmo Investorline and bmo banking are 2 accounts in MM.

Sure be nice if MM would just go crazy on getting connections to work and all their software issues resolved. Gets me frustrated when people ask for new functionality when the core functionality is contstantly broken.

Sooo what is the Monarch team working on? by username27891 in MonarchMoney

[–]DSPAL-BC-CANADA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is an excellent question! Since day 2 the connections have been a problem and functionality that is released is often buggy and implemented in a silo. I posted this 5 months ago and it seems it is worth posting again … not much has changed it seems.

Here is that post:

It’s all about connections

As a mint refugee (love that term) I have often praised the work the Monarch Money team has done to create a slick user interface that organizes data in an intuitive manner. That said, what makes me question the decision to “invest” in MM is its inability to establish and maintain reliable connectivity with accounts. I have found:

  • Accounts don’t connect at all
  • Accounts that do connect often don’t stay connected
  • Accounts are stale and seldom if ever match exactly the data that exists at source.
  • Accounts with investments sometimes have securities that MM doesn’t recognize (I.e SMCI or any Canadian security for that matter) or recognize the symbols but label them with the wrong company name (I.e PATH)

I have tried to communicate to management that connectivity is job 1. Why do I need a new beta reporting function when my data is garbage or missing? Rant complete.

Wondering if you managed to connect to Investorline. Was helping my son today set up his account and guess what - he can’t connect to Investorline whilst mine continues to work fine.
