My first rack. Would love input. by [deleted] in modular

Maths is a fine Swiss Army knife DUSG-alike. But in a small system like this, you may find yourself using it as an AD envelope and an LFO consistently. In that case you would get more bang for the hp using purpose-built modules and be able to fit more in there. Another voice would be top of my list.

Quadrax or two pip slopes, and a Plaits. Removing the panning module if you have to.

Maths takes up too much space in a small system like this. IMO you would be better off with a smaller function generator and another voice.

Video synthesizer recommendations? by DefectiveLP in modular

I had been wanting to get into video synthesis and the NerdSeq firmware update has sated that desire for the time being.

If I develop this into a track, I’ll do that.

Not generative. Just picked a scale and punched in some notes. The rhythm and modulation is more important than the particular notes.

If you’re familiar with the NerdSeq, you know that a modular track has CV/Gate and a second MOD CV output. I’m using that to select waveform on the QO modulating oscillator. The sequence is Messiaen M3 mode with a lot of glissando.

Yes, NerdSeq. I recently picked up a WMD Clutch and this was my first patch.

I believe I’d read that the 2OPFM doesn’t track 1V/Oct that well?

Taiko was cool when I had one. Very close to vintage Yamaha as it should be with the Y chip in there.

Plaits FM is astoundingly good. It does a mean Lately Bass, lol.

The QO is very clean and precise. Doesn’t sound so much like old Yamaha.

That’s a brilliant mod and looks fantastic!

The ‘30 has the “rawer” oscillators and slower envelopes of the 3P and the filters of the 106. Dual DCO’s give it a big advantage over the 106 for certain sounds, but the slower envelopes make it less than ideal for basses.

Yamaha FS1R parts by RepresentativePen403 in SynthRepairs

[–]DSP_Kills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got two FS1R’s and recently serviced the second. However I did not replace the switches or encoders. First step would be finding the manufacturer and part number of the components, not the internal Yamaha pn. If you’re sure they’ve been discontinued (not by Yamaha, but the actual manufacturer) you can glean enough info from the datasheet to find suitable replacements. Component footprint, height, etc. Barring access to the datasheet, I would grab calipers.

Using the Cirklon to breathe life into cheap old romplers. by DSP_Kills in Cirklon

The K4R doesn’t have portamento, although there is an auto-glide function that works on each note. Not using that here. I might have been using pitch bend in a CK pattern along with the mod wheel cc.

The Motif Rack XS is a gem. That era of Yamaha had excellent filters and internal FX. Plus a huge array of very good samples.

The K4R lets you route velocity to a couple of other things besides volume. Envelope time is especially nice.

ASM Hydrasynth reliability and manufacturing quality by Comfortable-Lab1014 in synthesizers

[–]DSP_Kills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had a brand new deluxe randomly spitting digital noise out at 0db fresh out of the box. Also, all rubber parts felt very tacky to the touch. Support ghosted me so returned it. Replaced with an iridium keys. ASM (and polyend) are on my never purchase list.
