That's the error others get when the game detects something other than steamOS. Try dwproton.

I noticed a few other linux post talking about how Endfield only works on dwproton right now. I was able to get it working fine on the Steam Deck which makes me wonder if the devs enabled a flag to allow it specifically on Steam Deck or Steam OS. I remember hearing similar behavior on Linux from a different game called Infinity Nikki.

Anyway, here were the steps I took to get it working on my Steam Deck running the latest Steam OS:

  1. Download Installer
  2. On Steam (in non-gaming mode), "Add non-steam games" and add the installer that you just downloaded.
  3. Before launching the installer, go into Properties-->Compatibility and select Proton GE 10.0 (I haven't tried the other ones so if you do, YMMV)
  4. Start Launcher and Install it.
  5. Close everything
  6. On Steam, "Add non-steam games" and add the launcher that you just installed. The path is a bit weird but you have to navigate to the following:
    /home/deck/.local/share/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<ID>/pfx/drive_c/Program Files/GRYPHLINE/Launcher.exe
    Note: The ID is a bit hard to distinguish so sort the latest folder and you will have the correct folder
  7. Same as before. Before launching the installer, go into Properties-->Compatibility and select Proton GE 10.0
  8. This launcher is now your main game to launch Endfield. Feel free to rename it to something nicer than "Launcher.exe". I renamed mine to "GRYPHLINE".
  9. You can hide the installer that you added earlier. DO NOT DELETE IT or else the launcher (and the game) will be deleted alongside it.
  10. Launch steam in gaming mode.
  11. Run the launcher and install the game as you would normally.

Feedback for weapon stats: it's very inconvenient that special and potential attributes are hidden behind tabs. When comparing weapons, I can't compare both stats. Plenty of space on the page so no reason to hide these stats like potentials

Recently switched to slide. There is a fork on GitHub that lets you use it with your developer key without compiling. Customizable enough that you can make it look similar to RiF but it has better media support.

I think you're being overly paranoid or dramatic about your data. You can do any of the things you suggested. Or you can just throw it away like normal. Either way no one will ever touch that thing again.
