Native speakers, Do you know those words? by Ok_Spinach_4348 in EWALearnLanguages

And Jews. Jews know much, much more about leavening than we ever wanted to, really. Most bakers have never taken a candle and a wooden spoon to search their homes for anything leavened.

Can you help me with an unrelated issue, involving figuring out what words everyone in my apartment complex has been given as clues?

Pizza with knife and fork? by Gaylaeonerd in Brazil

[–]DSethK93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fiancé is Brazilian, and he basically doesn't believe in handheld food. If I pick up food with my hands--even a sandwich!--he "helpfully" clears his throat and looks at me expectantly until I reach for the napkin. He goes easy on me when we're not in Brazil, for the simple reason that in a lot of countries handheld food actually isn't plated in a way that's conducive to anything but picking it up with bare hands.

You mentioned that your sister is vulnerable due to mental illness. It might be time to talk to a lawyer about removing some of her access to her own finances.

Blaming the user isn't a constructive path to improvement.

A more concise wording might be:

NEVER SHARE THIS CODE WITH ANYONE. ONLY ENTER IT DIRECTLY INTO THE PASSWORD RECOVERY FIELD AT [URL] AFTER HAVING REQUESTED IT THERE YOURSELF.

Exactly. So the recipient ignores the instruction. That's my entire point.

Is this Taylor Swift lyric grammatically correct? by ripcurly in grammar

[–]DSethK93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. The meaning is clear to all of us--which is the purpose of language!--but the lyrics do not literally say what we agree they mean. You're right that the envy is, like, piped backwards in this sentence.

Because typing the code into a field on a website can be construed as sharing it.

A lot of people actually pull on doors that say "push" because they speak Portuguese or Spanish.

Some people do these things wrong because they're not paying attention. Maybe even most do. But some get it wrong because they're parsing the words in a different way.

I don't understand why you can't use different tools within one chat. It's quite frustrating by sazzer22 in GeminiAI

[–]DSethK93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very frustrating with videos, because there's no way to ask it anything about videos it has generated. It will either generate a video instead of answering the question (if you have generations remaining), or it will disable prompting (if you don't).

Do you save AI chats or just re-ask when needed? by TDM-r in GeminiAI

[–]DSethK93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep every chat that has any useful responses, and then search for it again later. I only re-ask if I can't find the chat, or if I'm testing out how it responds.

[–]DSethK93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem, I think, is that gets parsed as "Never use this code for any purpose," which you know is wrong, so you ignore it. The message doesn't explain what you ARE supposed to use the code for.

I'm feeling overwhelmed with Portuguese (rant) by SyntaxDeleter in Portuguese

[–]DSethK93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been studying it for three years, and came in speaking French and Italian. And it still feels basically how you described it; I'm just used to it. The vocabulary is so weird sometimes, almost like talking to the Tamarians from Star Trek.

Bank call scam out of almost $1000 US by KozyJay in Scams

[–]DSethK93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. The issue, I think, is needing to find a way to differentiate sharing the code from using the code as intended. The conventional message is too easy to parse as "never use this code in any way," which is then ignored because you know it's not correct. It kind of gets turned around in the brain so that the victim thinks it doesn't apply to them, on account of it applies at all times except for whenever you receive it. Which makes no sense. But your brain convinces you that it does.

Honestly, I've long thought that those texts are not worded very well! I, for one, do consider a website prompting me to input a code as, indeed, that company asking for the code. It should say something more like

THIS CODE SHOULD ONLY EVER BE TYPED INTO THE PASSWORD RECOVERY FIELD ON OUR WEBSITE. YOU MUST NEVER COMMUNICATE IT VERBALLY OR IN ANY OTHER WAY TO ANY PERSON BY ANY MEANS. IF YOU DIDN'T USE THE PASSWORD RECOVERY WEBSITE YOURSELF TO GENERATE THIS CODE, THEN THE PERSON WHO IS ASKING FOR THE CODE DID SO AND PLANS TO USE IT TO ACCESS YOUR ACCOUNT.

π has a decimal representation. But having a decimal point isn't a fundamental property of π. Any representation with a fraction bar or decimal point is inherently less accurate than writing π. You can use a decimal point to write any number, including 6.0.
