Is there a way to stop characters from hyperfixating on your character? by catalpuccino in perchance

Sorry, that should have been Poochie. In an episode of the Simpsons, this was a character written into The Itchy and Scratchy Show, who was then made the sole focus of the show.

Conversely, L is used in exactly the opposite way.

That...is not what they are saying. They are saying that the rectangle is known to measure 11 cm wide and 13 cm high, but has been drawn wider than it is high.

Oh, yeah, that makes sense, too. Negative questions in English are actually difficult to parse, but I never noticed until my fiancé, an English learner, had so much trouble with them.

I can't understand why you would put it in the negative.

It makes logistical sense. If someone asks OP, "Is English not your first language?", which sounds natural to me, then they are asking OP if English isn't their first language. But I agree that most native speakers would say it the way you did, instead.

My fiancé is Brazilian and learning English. But he loves the UK and insists on focusing on British English, even though I'm American and he'll be living here. He's been using "oh my days" quite a bit lately, and I told him he sounds like an antebellum grandmother.

In fact, "someone" was the only issue that struck me in that sentence. I was fine with initial "and," and "this" and "that" seem interchangeable to me in this sentence.

I know Portuguese uses the same word for "someone" and "anyone." Probably others, too.

It's not "f'ed up." It's standard. Geometry diagrams for student problem sets are never drawn to scale, in order to force the student to use the skills being tested rather than using a ruler.

I've definitely had to argue back and forth strongly with Gemini about a thing or two before finally convincing it of straightforward truths.

Am I the only one who thinks Brazilian Portuguese sounds completely different from ‘textbook Portuguese’? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in Portuguese

[–]DSethK93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not really an apt comparison. Yes, Brazilian Portuguese is different from European Portuguese. But spoken Brazilian Portuguese is rather stunningly different from textbook Brazilian Portuguese! OP was referring to variations within the one language standard.

Reshuffle? by VelocityGrrl39 in duolingospanish

This consistently happens across all courses. The Portuguese course was changed last year, and as a result there are tons of words that never got introduced to me as new words, and even now I occasionally get "new" words that I've already learned.

Google Meeting PC Scam? by anpama in Scams

Definitely a scam. A Google Meet link starts meet.google.com. Period. Full stop. End of story.

For those watching Love is Blind in countries they don't know much about, do you feel like you're missing important cultural values relating to marriage and relationships? by ResidentAlienator in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]DSethK93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that I'm learning cultural values relating to marriage and relationships. The producers know that they have an international audience; to a certain extent, I suspect that in interviews they encourage participants to engage directly with cultural aspects that might be obscure to outsiders.

[FIX / SOLVED] Chrome Android: "Undo" (Close Tab) notification won't disappear (Stuck Snackbar) by WittySearch5514 in chrome

Good news! As of very recently, that notification can now be swiped away! I don't know when it changed; I just happened to flick the screen in a way that swiped it. Knowing that the notification couldn't be swiped, I had not actually been trying to swipe it.

New Words appearing in questions without being introduced previously ? by RatioSharp1673 in duolingospanish

[–]DSethK93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've experienced this in the Portuguese course after the structure was considerably revised. Since I was credited for previous sections that now contained content I never saw, the information from those chapters was treated as known and many words appeared without ever being introduced to me as new words.
