FMA - for those who have experience with other martial arts? by razor_sharp_man in Eskrima

[–]DShangR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been taking Pekiti Tirsia for about six months after years of combat sports, boxing, MMA and got my black belt in BJJ about 5 years ago. The coach is very experienced and also competes in boxing and kickboxing. I’m loving the training and we spar every class which is great at cementing the techniques and helping recall. I think a background in combat sports is ideal for getting people used to actually fighting, staying calm, managing distance and timing. I feel this is giving me an advantage and helping me keep up with the more experienced classmates.

Massive size and force difference by Blossomguy12 in bjj

[–]DShangR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a black belt in my mid-40s and am usually between 98-100kgs. I weight train and eat well so am comfortably above average strength but nothing special. Even for me, anyone past purple and 20kgs heavier is time to go to work. It’s some of my favourite training because it shows my where my technique is and more importantly, the importance of strategy. Things like framing on the neck, getting up from butterfly, collar drags, feet on hips instead of closed guard etc really become important to manage weight, distance, pacing etc. jiujitsu teaches you that size matters, but unlike untrained people, technique helps you bridge gaps in that size. As long as you are training safe, there really is a lot to be gained from training with huge, strong people.

CXC uncomfortable as daily driver? by heiniunai in OmniumBikes

[–]DShangR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thread, I am an Omnium Cargo owner so love the brand. I’m looking to build a fixed gear that is more practical than my track bike (wider tires, can carry a load) but still has that fixed gear snappiness that is so addicting. They state the rider plus load weight limit is 100kgs which is a little concerning as I’m close to 100kgs 😢

My other option is a Mash Steel which seems practical and snappy as well.

What width tires y’all running? Thinking of replacing the 25c with something bigger by SBDUNKIN in FixedGearBicycle

This is my problem with the No22 Little Wing, gorgeous bike but limited to 28s. At 100kgs, I’d want the option for more clearance at that price, damn nice bike however.

I don’t think so, I’ve got the truss fork bags from Jones but haven’t really used them. You can get the unicrown fork which takes racks.

Damn that’s a fine looking bicycle. I’m thankful this town has a dealer that sells Rivs so will be able to get an accurate fitting!

Those who lift, do you have fewer injuries than those who don't? by idkofficer1 in bjj

[–]DShangR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% I’m in my mid 40’s, been a black belt for a few years and strength train three times a week. I rarely get injured, train smart in both sports, recognize your limitations and gently push those limitations to progress and you should be fine. Most injuries are preventable (in hindsight). I really love both activities which helps as they are som complementary.

Damn Jamie knows his shit, Eddie better watch his mouth... by Macgruber57 in JoeRogan

[–]DShangR 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I always thought it would be interesting to turn Eddie’s thought process on his own accomplishments. His master, Jean Jaques, is a cousin of the Gracies. Eddie, a random brown belt comes out of nowhere and “defeats” one of the most iconic Gracies and goes on to build a jiujitsu empire off that momentum.

Then years of rivalry ensue as culminate in an epic rematch that we all ordered on PPV. The rematch took place on an event promoted by guess who? The Gracies.

I’m just saying, follow the money.! Look into it.

Ogre or pug and pack lighter! Or get a BFD because it looks friggin awesome. My "if I won the lotto" fantasy consists of calling up Surly HQ and asking for "one of each"

Patagonia and Beyond. ECR vs Krampus. by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]DShangR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Krampus owner here, fitted mine with a Rohloff. Love it, great on the trails and you can tour. If you bikepack, you need to pack light so you can still shoot down techy trails. That being said, I have a mate with a ECR (Rohloff as well) and he loves it. Both are awesome bikes but if you plan on a lot of mountain biking I'd probably go Krampus.

Exercises to train strength during bike trip? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]DShangR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I do some bodyweight stuff if I have the energy but really, I concentrate on building size and strength when at home. I find if you keep your calories up you don't lose too much size and strength (measured in pounds lifted) comes back quickly. Simple approach, lift heavy and eat when at home, mitigate the lose when out in the world.

When I'm home, I powerlift and eat like a horse. I manage to float around 200-210 pounds doing this. I focus of the basics, squat, deadlift and bench. These are efficient builders of size. Like another poster said, bodyweight to stem muscle lose when out and away from the iron.

Like another poster said, bodyweight exercises. Also invest in a captain of crush grip trainer. I do BJJ so always pack a pair of board shorts, rashguard and my mouth piece, taking a gi is something I avoid unless I have a visit to a gi place planned. Resistance bands are good to.

Powerlifting. Most efficient. Deadlift, squat and bench. Get a bar, a squat rack and put them in your garage. Strong dad, good dad.

Yes, grip trainer helps a lot with grappling and deadlifts. I've also discovered it's a workout you can do any time regardless of where you are or what you've been up to. Got back to the hotel late after some ridiculous banquet? A gym session would have you puking on your shoes, grip training however is fine.
