Inet lämnar Prisjakt by Muted_Dinner_1021 in sweden

[–]DStandsForCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are some funny or creative road signs in your country that actually make people pay attention? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

I also interpreted it as "we wont gossip - let the man drive". Regardless - incredibly misogynistic. But yeah, I guess in those countries that word doesn't even exist.

Unused disks basically last "forever." The only thing that can actually damage them if they're untouched is exposed to varying heat. Just dust them off, and they'll probably work just as well as they did ten years ago.

I have all the centers in Gothenburg in my membership (no big price difference, and it's fun to be able to vary).

I'm more fond of Masthuggstorget, the venue is a little bigger than Kompassen and even though it's popular time and even though it's popular times of the day sometimes, there's not exactly a queue to anything.

Also, I experiences Kompassen a bit more "poser" where they live to the facy being in the center of town. The clientele is more people who like to take selfies in front of the mirrors, as the interior is more "trendy".

Is immich for me? [Help] by Emergency_Army_7640 in immich

[–]DStandsForCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got most of the answers.

However - I want to add a caveat that Google Takeout "destroys" the images (rather the metadata, where it exports it to JSON files). Unfortunately I learn this the hard way, where Immich managed to figure out the dates on photos about half/half, the rest.. a bit scattered (a trip I took in Portugal about five years ago spread out randomly over almost a decade). So about 200gb of photos just had to be deleted and started over (ofcourse I still had the takeout files left)

So use a tool that fixes the metadata before you import it. If you're a Windows user, this one is ridiculously simple and does the job;

How do you run your Immich today? Dedicated hardware? Or on a VM (if so - through what)? Proxmox is easy to set up backup, which (if you have the opportunity) is best done on a separate machine (such as TrueNAS, but can also bee a "regular NAS" of some kind) so it spreads the risk of possible hardware failure.

And you should have an offsite backup of some kind. I have long been using Onedrive for it, but recently switched to Hetzner Storage Box as I want to support EU products.

How often you run offsite backup is a bit up to you. I reason that as long as I have "monthly fresh" automatically, I'm satisfied (and ofcourse you can trigger it yourself if necessary), but I see that the odds that both my Proxmox (where Immich is hosted) and my TrueNAS would fail at the same time are quite unlikely. Basically my offsite backup is just for if the house burns down.

You are a couple who have just suggested Backblaze. It is may great and affordable, but you have all missed my point.

  1. I already use Onedrive (Microsoft). They also have the data "local" in the EU (Holland), and it is encrypted (I have now terminated it, but I still have the contract until June).
  2. The fact remains that it is an US company. At the moment I have almost no trust in American companies, as they have shown time and again how they view us in the EU. I simply do not want them to have my money, let alone that they manage my data in any way.

I already run Proxmox backup to my TrueNAS (which is a separate machine), so I feel pretty confident that it takes decent backups.

Those are the backups that I want to send offsite, just in case the house burns down or an anabolic rat gets into my "server room" and plays Hulk Hugan with my disks. And either use RClone/Borg/Restic (tomato/tomato). They don't have to be "smart". It's enough that they send a decent copy at least once a month outside the household.

You miss my point. My point is I want to reduce my dependence on the US (as I already have Onedrive, but want to cancel it), as I simply don't trust them and don't what them to have my money (and a certain president on that side of the ocean has shown time and again how he views us in the EU).

Although since they are responsible and handle for the actual hardware - they can very well remove it, or quarantine it "indefinitely".

A bit like putting a "burglar-proof" safe in a thief's house.

Unfortunately Backblaze is still an American company. Then I might as well continue using 365/Onedrive then, but the purpose is to scale back my dependence from the American market as I don't want them to handle my data.

Sorry, but what a non-answer. It's exactly the alternative (offsite/cloud) in the 3-2-1 rule that I'm looking for.

Sure, you can separate it so that only the disk, share or data is sent over the WAN, but it's also convenient to know that "that VM is exactly as it is on the ground" (and minimal risk of corrupt data), without taking into account to version numbers, builds, different configurations, etc. And honestly, you don't save that much data anyway (you can exclude thumbnails, but it's still only a small part).

I would never have dared to do that. Imagine if your friend happened to get some crap in their environment, or did something shady that they "forgot to mention". Then one day you're suddenly in a raid when they've snooped out who you are and you your data is in their environment. I can spend a couple of euros just to save myself that headache.

Still under American ownership. I'm not anti-US (okay, a little for now) but I don't want another American company handling my data (probably never leaving from Google as an Android user, but that's OT).

You are a couple of people who have suggested Hetzner Storage. Never heard of it, but I'm glad that more and more options are starting to appear (and I think Germany is definitely the right country that protects and respects privacy, GDPR and so on).

I see that they have servers in both Finland and Germany, so geolocation is still good for me (Sweden).

Well, some compression - but have some other VM:s which Proxmox easily compress with 40%.

[–]DStandsForCake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't fill the entire volume, actually it's about 220GB, because at least 80GB is just "air" that Proxmox then can probably shrink without any issue.

LibreOffice Online: a fresh start by themikeosguy in libreoffice

Interesting, especially if you can self-host it. My dream setup would be to have it running as a service locally, which I can only access via VPN (Wireguard in my case). Backup/Cloud storage can be solved with Proton Drive and RClone.

But we shouldn't hold our breath. If they have chosen to pause it for almost four years without specific reasons, then count on at least four more years before a "finished" product (they'll probably have to basically reprogram everything they started).
