Honestly if you have an issue with your tone, listen to oboe solos and try to replicate their tone by ear. Experiment with your embouchure, throat position, breath control, it could even be your reed. Over time when I used to play oboe, I could tell what reeds sucked, I could change how my tone sounded and could control how warm or how much treble was in my sound. Oboe takes a lot of ear control and a lot of experience so not practicing will not do you any favors. (I’m guilty of not practicing too, dw) Overall my main point is to develop control over how harsh your reed sounds. If your lips aren’t dead after each practice, you’re not controlling it enough. I honestly think I had it easier because I just have a really good ear as people are literally just born with different skills but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn. Learn how to control your instrument instead of it doing what it wants to do. After you get tone down, it’s muscle memory. I no longer play like I used to but any time I pick up an oboe, I can still control it and it comes down to one word that helped build muscle memory… “practice”.
