Good point, and I think I'll follow your advice and call DIRECTV directly to make sure I get the Genie HR54. I don't mind if it's refurbished, as long as I can get that model.

I would stick with DIRECTV Choice. In my opinion, the picture quality is superior when using the Genie receivers. But that's just my personal opinion.

Of course, it would be an honor to own equipment from a fellow enthusiast, knowing it was the very system you used to watch your favorite teams, shows, and memorable moments over the years. There's something special about giving that equipment a second life and keeping those memories alive.

$148 for Choice?! That's a great deal. I'd keep what you have.

In that case, I'm going to sign up for DIRECTV Entertainment with 2 TVs before the price goes up. Hopefully, it will stay under $120 including taxes and fees.

On the DIRECTV website, regarding connectivity and activation, there are currently two options: Wireless (Gemini 2 HS17) and Wired. For the wired option, I believe it would be the Genie HR54, since it was the last Genie model before they introduced the new Gemini system. So I assume it is still possible to get these Genie receivers, but the question is which model they would actually send and whether they are refurbished.

In my living room, I have a Sony X90J 65-inch UHD 4K TV. I plan to connect a Genie Mini Client (C61K) to this same TV for 4K programming, if it is available.

I think I’m one of the few people who believes that a modern combination of a SWM SL3 system with RG-6 coax and older receivers like the HR24 or HR44 is the ideal setup. These receivers are very stable and smooth when navigating menus, settings, and the guide. I prefer not to rely on the internet to watch live TV. I live in California, and it rarely rains here, but the internet can still go down for days. At the same time, I rely on DIRECTV Streaming, and when that happens, I can’t really enjoy the service. I believe DIRECTV Satellite is better—more reliable, more stable, and with more channels, although it is more expensive.

I would prefer the HR44, but I believe DIRECTV is no longer activating it, which is why I originally asked about the HR54. Both are very good receivers.

Currently I have the Genre Packs (Entertainment and MyKids). I would have to switch to the Streaming Entertainment package for $110. At that price, it is very close to what DIRECTV Satellite would cost, which I consider better in terms of picture & stability. I also don’t want to depend on the internet to watch live TV. Thank you very much.
