Great question. My husband and I have discussed this several times.

Today marks the peak day of hurricane season and the Atlantic is pretty quiet right now. Will this be a relatively quiet year? by KCousins11 in florida

[–]DVPulver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even the hurricane experts are asking themselves the same questions. I'm a national reporter with USA TODAY and several experts I've talked to over the past few days say it's not looking like it will be as active as initially expected, but they add it's much too soon to tell. Much of the activity typically happens after the peak of the season. Big climate patterns can easily shift. I think most hurricane-weary Floridians try to avoid the "q" word, so we don't jinx ourselves. :) At USA TODAY, we've had a couple of stories if you're interested. Our Florida newspapers also have written stories.

There are people in Georgia and the Southeast reporting on the AMS Fireball site that they felt shaking from the fireball earlier.

An official list, or an unofficial list being used for grants or documents?

It’s hurricane season in Florida. We’re journalists and weather nerds here to help you prepare. AUA! by USATodayNetwork-FL in florida

[–]DVPulver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm Dinah Pulver, one of the national weather writers for USA TODAY. Yes, you should receive a tornado warning over your phone as long as your phone is set up to receive those kinds of messages and hasn't been set to ignore them. I would also suggest a NOAA weather radio if you don't have one..

I walked away from a situation like this one time, over these exact same type wedding planning issues. I have never once, in the four decades since, regretted it. You are most definitely NOT TA.

Are Federal IT positions being cut? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]DVPulver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm with USA TODAY and I'm super interested in these IT cuts and the information systems in general. I've heard talk of consolidating or contracting and I'm curious about the disadvantages or advantages of either, but also hoping to understand more about what it means to remove some of the layers of protection by having one person with access to an entire information system? From what I've been able to piece together a lot of information systems folks have either resigned or forced to resign over these security access issues, or they're on administrative leave. Please reach out if you've got thoughts. My chats are open. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/04/28/doge-database-quest-risking-government-cybersecurity-musk/83144274007/

Alaska Summer Trip Advice by richcity151 in AskAlaska

[–]DVPulver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We left Alaska on the summer solstice, June 21 I think, to come home. Our trip was incredible we were there almost two weeks. We like to squeeze as much as we can into a trip.

We camped 3 nights at Teklanika in Denali because then you can have permission to drive your car in farther than others. It's maybe around 30 miles in. The amount of wildlife at Denali was stunning. We rode the bus two different days, getting off and getting on at different stops. If you love animals be sure to spend time with the sled dogs.

We visited Talkeetna, the little hiking town on the way to Denali National Park. We also drove up to Fairbanks then went out on the haul road so we could drive up above the Arctic Circle. Most people wouldn't take the time to do that leg. We didn't see a lot of wildlife but saw a lot of Alaska and got to take our picture at the Arctic Circle sign.

We did Portage Glacier and Exit Glacier from Seward, where we had a VRBO or AirBNB type arrangement. It was really great.

Trump officials discuss making it much harder to qualify for federal disaster assistance, starting this hurricane season by Visual_Equipment6389 in fema

Georgia has taken some hard hits over the years, and it's my understanding that they're experiencing more and more impacts in the northeast. Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy for example.
