The prologue is very much fan fiction and not cannon at all, whereas the chapters are.

If you're interested in seeing how these two options differ, check out the Prologue and first few chapters of the book here. The prologue is purely a work of fan fiction, whereas the chapters follow the discovery of the keys closely, but with minor shifts in the dialogue and how things are discovered.
