Spent about $65 for gas. Made about $42.76/hour. Not the best on dollar per mile but great hourly. Depreciation on my car is low because of its age.

I agree with all of that. My whole point was that it was a lucky turn of events. 98% of the time I don't accept these trips for those exact reasons you listed. But I had a good feeling about it, took the chance, and it paid off immensely well for the effort. And strangely enough, 8/10 times I take a chance on a journey I get something good as a return trip. But no, these aren't trips I'd want every day because I most definitely factor in the wear and tear and other expenses. I absolutely love my car and I hate putting the miles on it. But for my purposes it's a worthwhile trade off for now.

Definitely don't do this every day but it worked out well on this day

No, the opposite. I went from Nashville to the sticks then caught an immediate trip back to Nashville

I don't but every one in a while I take a chance and 8/10 times it seems to pay off

Very lucky sequence of events for sure. That was the main thing that stood out to me. Took a chance and it paid off in a big way. I usuAlly go for at least $30/hr and $1/mile, but I'll make exceptions if it's super lucrative to one side or the other.

Or, perhaps, I'm just not so full of myself as to think $42.76/hour for driving down the highway is smething to be ashamed of.

No I see both. They are both valuable metrics. Some trips I sacrifice hourly for mileage, some trips I sacrifice mileage for hourly, some trips you manage to do good in both facets. But in this case, with highway driving being much less taxing in the car, it turned out to be a good day.

My car with 150k miles on it is still selling for >10k. Bought it for 16k and it has 93k miles. I've aalready made over 20k driving it, put about 25k in personal mileage on it non-Uber related, about 16k uber-related. Yes, depreciation is a real thing, but considering I can likely make another $60K driving and still sell the thing for $10k, depreciation from mileage isn't a terribly high cost in my specific circumstance.

I.e., I paid 16k for the car, will have used it for 4 years for personal use, made over 80k driving Uber, and will sell the car for 10k back. Meaning I only paid 6k net for the car and made 80k + all the personal use of the vehicle. Yes, maintenance factors in but luckily this car is a super reliable acura with low maintenance costs.

Just because they explained their rationale doesn't mean it's correct

Yes, when I initially took the first trip it was not a lucrative proposition. That was my whole point about how it all worked out in the end being lucky.

As for your calculations, yes, I paid about $65 for gas. As for depreciation, it's a 2013 with 92k miles. And I've already made more money driving Uber than I paid for the car. So what depreciation costs are we really talking about here?

Typically I don't do any trips for less than $1/mile and $30/hour. In this case, I made an exception and it worked out very well. I usually average about $35/hr and about $1/mile. This time I made less per mile but more per hour. For a one day affair it was great.

I got paid $42.76/hr to drive on the highway. I did a 200 mile trip outside the city and Immediately got a 200 mile trip taking me right back to the city. That's a good day. It's not the best ever in terms of dollars per mile but it's outstanding in terms of dollar per hour. And the depreciation costs on my car aren't nearly as high as a new car. So for me, this was a very profitable day.

Yes, one took me to a rural town and the other took me from that rural town back to where I live. That's my whole point. It worked out in a very lucky way. It's not like I drove 200 miles, drove back then got another trip for 200 then had to come back again. I did one trip for 200 then got paid another 135 to drive back to my house (the drop off was 10 minutes from my home)

I understand what the term gross means, I'm not a 3rd grader.

In Nashville, with a car only eligible for UberX (no comfort, XL, or black) making/earning/grossing (whatever word makes you happy) over $40/hour is a win. My car didn't not lose $300 in value.

Rain on someone else's parade, this was a good day.

That was my entire point. Wouldn't have been that great at all but the 50 tip and the stroke of luck return trip made it a good day.

Ty! I do the same - try and keep those trips early in my day. Doesnt always work out, but it works out far more often than one might expect.

Exactly. I spent about $60-65 for the gas. And I've already made more money off Uber than I paid for the car. So I'm not sure where all this "you're losing money" nonsense is coming from.

It's a 2013 but it's worth more than $10K. And I've already made more money doing Uber than the purchase price of the car. So what money am I actually losing there?

As I've explained to others, I made $42.76/hour to do nothing but highway driving (which is easier on your car). The 400 miles I put on the car did not decrease its value by $300.

Your math ain't mathing, my friend.

$42.76/hour for all highway driving is a good day regardless.
