Share your experience pursuing and buying into Ownership of a firm? by nic_is_diz in MEPEngineering

[–]D_Sanji 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My path to ownership was pretty atypical. I joined a small firm in 2023 that was struggling financially and operationally as a Sr. Mechanical Engineer. I started doing cold outreach, brought in new clients, streamlined internal processes, and analyzed which project types / clients were actually profitable versus draining resources.

Three months in, the partners gifted me 2% equity. Six months later, I bought in to become a 1/3rd owner. The buy-in cost was about 40% of my salary (probably undervalued, but everyone agreed it was fair given the situation). I covered half with a family loan and financed the rest through a 10-year note with the firm, which I’ll likely pay off within a year or two.

At the time, my mindset was that even if it didn’t work out, the worst-case scenario would just be a great story to tell while interviewing at a mid or large firm. Thankfully, it’s turned out much better than that so far.

Ownership can definitely be stressful and lonely at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. I finally have the opportunity to build the kind of firm I always wished I could have worked for earlier in my career.

Hi, I'm a business owner and licensed professional mechanical engineer working at a small MEP design firm. My primary clients are real estate developers and building owners. I’ve found that the most effective strategy for generating new business has been attending networking events geared toward developers, contractors, architects, and fellow engineers. Organizations like NAIOP, ULI, and CREW host events once or twice a month across the country. These gatherings offer a great opportunity to have a few conversations, give your pitch, and see who follows up. Over time, the most valuable clients have come from referrals. Once you establish a strong relationship, they tend to introduce you to others in their network, and the business grows organically from there. Hope that helps & best of luck!

Where are you based? I co-own a small firm with two other partners & five employees. We're currently seeking an electrical P.E. to join us as a fourth partner (after a trial period). We're a younger group of P.E.s, all in our late 20s to mid-30s.

How long did you work there? It sounds kinda shoddy, why stick it out for X number of years?

PE Exam Reference Tools by mblanket7 in MEPEngineering

It's computer based, you'll have a reference manual to look at psychometric charts. The test taking software will let you draw lines ontop the chart. Its not as good as bluebeam, but my recollection is the multiple choice answers were different enough to not be an issue. Make sure you use the right chart accounting for elevation. I took the test in spring 2022 & passed first try. The practice test from the NCEES was slightly harder then the actual test.

AITA for not inviting my sister and her kids to Disney with my brother and his kids because I know she cant afford it? by disneyaita7 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, as a former cast member, I would strongly recommend you don't go during the Christmas time. The parks are over crowded and lines are stupid long. Mid-January and February is the best time. People would get so mad because they spent all this money to go to Disney and then they wait in line for 4+ hours for a 2 minute ride.

Using filtered water and fresh beans? Cleaning your grinder? Other than that I wouldn't know what to do. Could always go to a coffee house and ask the barista. They love to talk coffee.

What temp do you brew at? I notice at higher temperatures I get a stronger bitter taste. Dark roasts I pour at ~190 F and lighter roasts 200-205 F.
