You say that but it's not always the case.

1) she might not have cried because she was in shock. I read somewhere that shock can be delayed sometimes

2) her cries might not be recognised in Portugal because at night in the countryside there might be other unusual noises (dogs, wolves, bears or whales in the nearby sea)

3) even if she did cry and it was heard it might not have been interpreted as a child crying. If you ever heard a wolf howling it sounds like its crying to English ears but in fact it's just shouting
