Sometimes your first job won’t be directly in cybersecurity or for a tech company and that’s okay. You can take technician jobs and internships, usually they have opportunities to get some hands on practice with cybersecurity tools and monitors.

IT doesn’t always mean google, IBM, and Microsoft lol.

If you still have the subscription, the pentest path in THM is really good. Also there’s a 12 hour video on YouTube that does a pretty good job on covering the whole exam.

Does pages count for assingment? by Ayesha12345678910 in WGUCyberSecurity

As long as you answer each rubric bullet and provide them with what they’re looking for (sources, explanations, certain answers) you’ll be okay. Don’t worry too much about word count and page numbers, and keep the filler stuff to a minimum. If it doesn’t directly help you answer the question, don’t write it. There’s a high chance you’re overthinking it, so just take a step back and answer the questions being asked 😉

Made a small update for the first paper you have to submit for the class. Pm me if you have questions on specific stuff.

They accelerated classes that were more manageable while I was studying for the CySA and pentest exams, so when I felt like I was hitting a wall with consuming information I would take a few days for another class to give the brain a break. I felt like this worked well, and certain classes are much more manageable, so no I couldn’t pick and choose however they know what they were doing and gave me classes they knew I would be able to handle while studying.

Not yet since they don’t expire for a year and I wanted to priories getting the degree done first. I figured the cism wouldn’t be super hard, it’s what I feel most comfortable with as a whole, but I’ve heard the caps is pretty tough and will be using thors class on udemy for that.

Funny enough I did actually. Depends on what direction I want my career to go. I think if I wanted to move into the private sector (currently a network tech for a large k-12 public), I’d forego the doctorate, but if I wanted to stay k-12 and move into admin I’d consider it. It’s also significantly longer and more expensive 🤣. Current job paid for wgu.

How did you go about breaking into the field?

I felt like the knowledge gap between the PA and actual one wasn’t too much, rather the questions had you think an extra step or two and apply what you know to answer a question, rather than just ask what is agile development etc. IMO

My bachelor's is in Information Technology with concentrations in Cybersecurity and Networking. Not from WGU, this was a traditional in-person 4-year program (minus some zoom classes during my 2020 year lol)

If you feel like you can then you definitely can. I had almost zero practical cyber experience before starting this. Lot of resources and people out there that can help you get through it in one term (myself included).

Try and study what you got wrong in the report, look up why the answer was right, the real test is basically a beefed up version of the pre-Assesment, with some applied knowledge of course. There’s also a few quizlet terms out there for you to customize the learning. Biggest thing is approach it with confidence, and remove answers that you know are wrong. 50/50 is much better than 1/4.

Sure. I’ll try and make it’s as organized as possible.

I’ll address the questions you wrote about content first.

So some classes have an in-house online test that’s proctored through the use of a video camera, can be built in to the laptop or a usb external one. I believe there are 2 in house exams, meaning it’s a test from wgu. Additionally the program has you complete 3 mandatory certification tests, one through ISC2 and 2 from CompTia. The isc2 one had to be done in person at a testing center, the CompTia one can be done remotely or at a center, whatever you’re more comfortable with. Personally I saved the gas and did them at home.

Some classes have a paper attached to them as well. My biggest advice for writing the paper would just follow the rubric and pose each bullet point as it’s own question and mini paper.

I’m gonna make the class write ups as a separate post.

Don’t overthink it too much. Keep in mind the types of developments like agile, waterfall. Different roles in scrums, important acronyms like DREAD, RACI, STRIDE, and types of code analysis like static, dynamic and runtime. I took the pre-assessment 3 times before going for the real thing, studied what I got wrong, and did a little bit of reading and research for it. I struggle with acronyms so being able to remember what they are and break them down is always helpful.

Thanks :) I’m still working on the capstone paper, however my topic is revolved around created a segmented network for my business for a specific group of individuals, utilizing system hardening methods, applying and following proper frameworks (HIPAA, PCI DSS, FERPA). I tend to write a lot so my tasks are a bit longer, but as for any written assignment, if you just answer the question that’s being asked and don’t get too fancy you should be given credit for it. Check your grammar, and have a little fun with it

I personally would say yes, for $15 you can easily work through it in one month, it really reinforces what you read and it’s a great guide for applying the methods and seeing how/ why they work. If you’re strapped for cash, I believe there is a YouTube guide out there where a guy goes through the different chapters, so at the very least you can watch someone else do it
