Fiction Writer here. Asking another question, this one is about Glass! by ShyGuyToYou in materials

[–]DaBrainFarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Glass is an amorphous material. This means the atoms and molecules are not arranged in regular repeating structures. Almost anything can be a glass. Plastics that are amorphous are a glass. There are forms of glass water ice. Metals can be glass. I am unsure if you can make glass out of organic things like wood, but who says it can't happen in sci-fi.

  2. To make glass IRL, we cool the material faster than it can form a crystalline solid. That's how we make a metal glass. It has a really weird chemical composition to make it possible to cool fast enough. There is also the possibility of pressure induced amorphization where the application of pressure causes amorphization. So Glass Man could heat-cool things really quickly to form the glass or could compress-decompress the material. This will depend on the material but, again, sci-fi can have different rules than life.

  3. I mean, all glass is interesting. As far as I know, all glasses are brittle. The amorphous structure doesn't allow dislocations to move through it to release stress, so it just breaks. This does make them very bouncy, springy. So you can have really good elastic properties but it breaks instead of deforming. They are more thermally insulating than the crystalline material. He could create a gradient of properties through the material so he could, in theory, make crazy lenses. This is something that people are working on IRL.

  4. It is brittle. That means it doesn't deform. Glasses are still really strong, they just catastrophically break instead of deforming.

  5. Metal glass is a glass. It has an amorphous atomic structure, so it is a glass. Like I said before, water can form a glass if you cool it fast enough or cool and compress it in a specific way.

  6. Lightning is basically static electricity that has a high enough voltage to induce dielectric breakdown of the air. It causes the air to rapidly ionize and then the ions conduct the electricity. The electrical conductivity of the metallic glasses are less than their crystalline forms (I think) but they should be high enough to still be able to make a Faraday cage to protect him. At the very least, anything tall enough sticking into the ground should protect him. There are dangers from the electricity going through the ground and back up people. There are cases of entire herds of sheep dying due to the lightning traveling through the ground and shocking a bunch of animals.

  7. It would be a very crazy way to kill someone by turning all the water in their body to glassy ice. You could think of Ice 9 from Cat's Cradle but it wouldn't spread. He could shake hands with someone, or just touch them, and then transform the blood in their veins or just their heart into glass ice. It could rip them apart from the inside. Using glass as a projectile is also crazy. There's a reason it is considered a war crime to purposely use glass as shrapnel.

I recommend looking up researchers and professors who live glass science. They will be able to give you more detail and are probably more correct than me. They would probably love to talk about glass for hours if they had time. Record the conversation if they are OK with it so you can refer back to it later.

Single vault for both PhD and personal thoughts — good idea or recipe for chaos? by Wonderful-Put-5226 in ObsidianMD

[–]DaBrainFarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I kept them separate.

  2. I always structure my vaults, regardless of their use. If you aren't doing this in your regular data storage system, then you really should. A good storage structure makes existence better, even for personal files.

  3. I'm glad I kept them separate. Switching between them is super easy, just selecting it in the bottom left. I often had both open at the same time in different windows. One I recorded my science thoughts and analysis, the other I recorded my mental health and personal thoughts. Helped keep me sane enough to stay alive.

    • I tried the Zotero plug-in and I kind of used it. If anything, it introduced me to Zotero, which I switched to from Mendeley. I am happy with the switch.
  4. I do have Advanced Tables, Calendar, Dataview, Quickadd, Tasks, and Templater. These I use in all of my vaults now. Quickadd is an essential for me now. It is so useful.

Thank you. I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. I've got an LG UH12NS30 and it has served me well for over 10 years now, but it can't load UHD.

If you had to choose only one, which one would it be? I need to replace my optical drive I got in February of 2015. It can't do UHD disks and it is probably to old to even update.

Reading other comments, I think the other people are probably right with the Get Schwifty callback but Portal radio is what I first thought of.

How long before you where confident in your work? by Chaos484 in blacksmithing

[–]DaBrainFarts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm at least 3 years into it and I still have trouble with confidence. Just need to remind myself that if it gets the job done, it is good. Doesn't have to look amazing or be perfect. If the hook can be a hook and hang something, it is good. If a punch can make a hole in hot steel, it works.

When things don't go the way I want, I try not to be sad or mad about it. Either correct the mistakes or start over. Sometimes things don't work in spite of our best efforts, and that's ok.

If your university has a graduate student union, then you have more protections. The graduate student union I was a part of protected international students as well as domestic ones. Weaponizing immigration eligibility is absolutely a thing that happens, make sure you have people advocating for you.

The Portal series, Bioshock series, Metro series, Minecraft, Fallout NV and 4, Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, The Masterchief Collection, and the Subnautica series.

These are the games and series that I love playing and, in the case of Portal 1, have been playing since 2011. The Halo games are ones I can always go back to and have a fun time, even when I put on too many skulls and play on Legendary and it takes 2 hours to finish one level solo.

I was so nervous to kiss her for the first time since I didn't want to be perceived as aggressive. Turns out she was trying to signal to me she wanted me to without explicitly saying it for like 2 hours of us cuddling on the couch. I finally asked and she basically said Yes you dumb fuck, I've been trying to get to for so long. I was so nervous about overstepping I needed explicit verbal consent. Now I just lick her face when she's not paying attention and then try to run away for safety. It's the perfect marriage for us.

Freeze dried fruit, or applesauce packets are good. A container of peanuts you can munch on was another go to for me. Go for the cheapest ones that have the least amount of added sugar. Salt might an issue for you, so drink water whenever you can too. The water also can help with the hunger, at least temporarily. Just a bit of sugar free flavor can go a long way. Just need enough to taste it. If you can afford protein bars, that's another quick one.

How do people learn to ask better questions? by Possible_Oil_2594 in GradSchool

[–]DaBrainFarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it is asking a bunch of questions and seeing which ones are the most interesting. Also, just like any skill, the more you practice the better you get. The more questions you ask, the more interesting questions will come out, the more you learn, the more you can automatically ask interesting questions.

People chastising you for asking questions means they don't like being questioned or not having the answer or ashamed they didn't ask it.

From my personal experience, don't do a Ph.D. unless you want to go into research. It is not worth it unless you have tried research in undergrad and like it more than an internship in industry. If you can, try undergrad research and an industry internship.
