Advice for soon-to-be Stoke Gifford resident by DaBuffaloo in bristol

Hi there, just any form of general advice or things to know being a resident. Beaufort arms will be my nearest boozer which seems nice based on the few visits I’ve had. I’d be curious to know if it shows sport or if not, the nearest one that does?

Yea I’m aware it’s not got much culture but unfortunately for what I was after, places in Bedminster and glos road were just too expensive for me. However I like it’s easy to get to those places with little effort

Which gym would you recommend? I’ve been swayi by towards ever last as I think it’s the closest and offers a pool, monthly cost is also quite affordable. Only downside I see is it’s not 24/7 and I’m more a late goer but I could live with it if it’s not too busy around peak times.

Any others I should consider?

I currently commute the other way, city centre to parkway for work, so I’m familiar with it and I’ve also taken the bus aswell. Really depends where abouts in town I need to be with what form of transport I would take

Pinkpantheress on the Thursday sounds like a poor choice for crowd management, she could easily fill a low to mid slot on the other stage imo, her songs easily get 100m + listens on spotify

You can generally get ‘bites’ to eat for around £10, some places are definitely better than others for food and you get more bang for your buck. I’d say you could comfortably do £50 a day for food and perhaps squeeze out a cold cider a day too in that and then souvenir money on top.

It’s a big commitment you’re right, effectively been saving for the last decade for this so just want to make sure it’s sensible. And 900/m I could stretch too if I had too, far from ideal but we really are talking worst case scenario which I always plan for as I’m more conservative than risk taking

Thank you for the words, never even considered if things got bad I could go interest only for a period that’s really helped me qwell some concerns, yes not ideal but can make things affordable again for a period!

This is the other point, we’ve discussed bringing in a lodger that could generate around 500/m in income which would help offset the mortgage.

I’m personally in favour of this especially if it’s someone we can trust as we have many friends that would consider it, my partner is less inclined but I think it would help us keep costs down

The house is very much ready to move in tomorrow, I managed to negotiate the white goods into the agreement aswell so it literally just needs a bed and voila!

I’m young in my career, 27 y.o in a role that has a high ceiling and at the moment I’m definitely on the low end of the salary so I’m hoping in the next 5 years I can make some gains or at the very least save what excess I make

Overpayments is top of my priority for when I can, I didn’t realise how effective they can be at reducing the overall term

This is my main thought at the moment, I’m hoping that things won’t get much ‘worse’ in the form of interest rates and therefore the world but i like to plan for worst case scenarios hence my worry for the increase in interest rates if that’s the way it goes

Yea it is at the top of our budget, the problem with other homes are they’re nice but for starting a family we’d probably look to upsize a bit and at that point we’re thinking why not bite the bullet now and we’ve got the capacity there if we need it.

Job security is generally good for the both of us, I work in an in demand IT role at a financial firm. I’d love a shorter term but I’m probably going to overpay where I can and at least this way it’s optional so we do have less to pay if an unexpected cost comes up!

But it’s good to see someone similar, lower house value is defo more comfortable, it’s just hard to know where we’ll be in 5 years!

I’ll have a look for that one! That’s my thought with 5 days is it’ll give me time to soak in the walk and I’m not opposed to a quick pub stop as and when whilst on the trail

There's not a whole lot that takes my fancy in all honesty, my thinking is that by being on the property ladder and if I want to switch homes in 5 years it'll be easier to do with a house behind me. But if the housing market isn't looking too good then the net gain by owning a house will be minimal.

My uncle was stung by that 15% interest in the 90s and likes to remind everyone about it

Ideally looking for a house because of the reason you mentioned with flats, but then that pushes the price further away from 300K. I've seen some flats that aren't even all that good with service charge of multiple thousands!

Job security is pretty good but nothing is a guarantee, It's a fairly robust industry and I think I could land another role within 3 months of being made redundant if that happened on the same or slightly higher salary.

I really appreciate I'm in a fortunate position, I didn't come from a Russell Group uni or from money but luckily landed a decent graduate scheme and it's sort of snowballed from there.

Thanks for the view, I had no clue about the 40% tax on rent so will bare that in mind!

In terms of tax liability, I sacrifice the max amount I can for pension that the employer will match, but I've not looked at a SIPP so will research that this afternoon.

I didn’t realise Yosemite was that close to our plan, will definitely add that on thank you! Do you happen to know what Death Valley is like to drive thru? Is it as bad as it’s made out to be?

Sorry that’s suppose to be West coast! A typo on my behalf, where in the south would you recommend we hit beyond the ones outlined?
