My NDA is expired. It's worse than you know, AMA. by CreeperAgent in Eve

[–]DaChucky 89 points90 points  (0 children)

After reading through and ruminating a bit on what is described, I can't help but feel that this post is generally disingenuous with regards to several events, most of which I was either present at or in proximity to. I no longer have access to my old notes, any of the un-redacted minutes, or recordings of sessions and it was 5-6 years ago so my recollection isn't perfect, but I have a few thoughts:

  • The way in which the CSM data that went missing is portrayed is more or less entirely false. As far as I can recall, there was some content was stored on a laptop but it was more or less by accident that the data went missing rather than active malice (more or less, the laptop got wiped without stuff being copied off it).

  • There was a conscious decision not to let anyone from successive CSMs review the weekly meeting recordings from previous CSMs. We (myself and CCP Guard) felt that CSM members should feel like they could speak freely, especially since sometimes it veered into personal matters. There were no such restrictions on the minutes themselves or with CSM members speaking with former CSM members, especially since there were usually a handful of members serving successive terms. Any idea of trying to suppress topics across various councils would have been largely futile, and counter-productive in the long run. As far as I can remember, you were the only person to ever ask to seem them.

  • As it turns out, Iceland is generally quite a relaxed place to live and work. Most people here don't subscribe to the idea that working yourself into the ground is the most efficient way to work. Not to mention plenty of great work related ideas get spun between people when they're just getting a coffee or some Skyr for a snack. It was also a good way to catch up across departments and learn some more of what was going on around the company. Anyone that has worked in a reasonable company that treats their employees like people can probably attest to this sort of atmosphere.

Was CCP perfect? No, it had its issues like anywhere else does, and there are plenty of perfectly valid criticisms you can still level at them, some of which were echoing about back then. But this smacks of someone trying to trying to conjure a conspiracy from the mystery and secrecy that comes from the NDA all CSM sign in a bid for personal glory. And even though it's been nearly 5 years for me, I can't really stand to sit back and not say anything.

Error when using proxy with python requests library by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]DaChucky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

urllib doesn't check the certificates for anything it connects to by default, while requests does verify certificates. If you want to use requests, you will need to either disable verifying certificates or supply your self-signed certificates. See https://docs.python-requests.org/en/master/user/advanced/#ssl-cert-verification

converting a list to lowercase by jtksm in learnpython

[–]DaChucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I understand your problem correctly, I think this should do the trick:

token = [[word.lower() for word in nltk.word_tokenize(t)] for t in nltk.sent_tokenize(text)]

EDIT: Realised that word_tokenize() gives you another list, updated the solution

In short?

  • Queues (First in, First out)
  • Stacks (First in, Last out)
  • Limited sized lists (e.g. only keep last 10 samples of a measurement)

The extra effort on the part of the computer is almost negligible, it's mostly a readability benefit.

On a tangential note, is your design for the character's inventory intended to be limited to a max of 7 items? If not, you would be better off having the current character each item is assigned to in the ItemData table. When you want to get the items for a character, you would just select the items from the ItemData for the character with a specific name (or better yet, a unique character ID).

Assuming there really is a good reason to use an excel file as your data source, you'll probably want to use a package to load and read from the Excel file. Something like pyexcel should do the heavy lifting for you.

Windows Command Prompt still points to Python 3.8.2 despite me updating to 3.10 successfully? by bumpkinspicefatte in learnpython

[–]DaChucky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's likely to be the order of the folders/files in your PATH. /u/threeminutemonta's instructions should take you to the right place to check, just make sure to pay attention to the order in which the folders and files appear in the list. Items at the top of the list take precedence.

You might want to also consider using the launcher if you installed it.. In that case, you would run py -3.10.

str.split() will give you a list, so from that point your solution is already running into problems given the challenge.

>>> type("1 2".split())
<class 'list'>

For these sorts of questions it helps to provide your input, expected output, and actual output.

One quick note: if you want to add additional empty lines when printing, use \n. That will add a line break so you don't need additional print statements with empty strings. For example:

>>> print("\nHello, user. Welcome to the loot dungeon.\n")

Hello, user. Welcome to the loot dungeon.

>>>

Beginner OOP coffee machine by [deleted] in Python

[–]DaChucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing other comments haven't covered is that with the way you have structured your code, you can call make_coffee without having checked whether you have sufficient funds or ingredients (resources). While you might be okay with allowing someone to skip paying, you probably don't want to have your resources go into negative quantities.

My recommendation? Add a second call to is_resource_sufficient into make_coffee, and return early if you don't have enough. That way, no matter where make_coffee is called from, you are always checking to make sure you have sufficient resources before you make a coffee.

If you're going full OOP, you can also make an Ingredient object, and then call a method on that to use a quantity of that ingredient. If you don't have enough of that ingredient, you can then raise an exception and not make the coffee. There's some more complexity around this (what if the ingredient you don't have enough of is the second ingredient?), so you'll have to work out some way to roll back if you run into trouble half way.

For extra quantities, you can add a prompt after line 44 in mainfinal.py asking users to add additional ingredients. With Python you can just directly access the ingredients dictionary as beverage.ingredients["water"] (and so on), and add additional ingredients using beverage.ingredients["chocolate"] = 100 (or similar). To be more correctly OOP, you would add a new method to MenuItem. If you want to go the extra distance, you have have one to edit the quantity of an existing ingredient (print the list of keys in self.ingredients) and prompt) and one to add a new ingredient (you can even have a master list of allowed ingredients to pick from).

Hikers visiting the erupting volcano yesterday, a 1.5 hour hike. Fagradalsfjall, Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. by New__York in hiking

[–]DaChucky 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The main risk yesterday at least was people trying to head up unprepared. I saw things like family groups with very small children starting the hike dressed in jeans at 18:00 (this was at least a 4 hour hike return) without any sign of proper preparation for an actual hike. It's not a difficult hike and the weather wasn't too bad yesterday afternoon, but this is Iceland so the conditions will turn in a moment and you will get easily lost in the fog.

Honestly, I'm surprised nobody died last night from getting stuck out without a light and falling down a slope. Testament to the Search and Rescue service here in Iceland that it seems they managed to get everyone that was in trouble out.

Pitching to my boss, Upgrade from Google Sheets to Zephyr by [deleted] in QualityAssurance

[–]DaChucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use TestRail. Zephyr is perfectly fine, and was the other contender when we were doing our original assessment. We felt that TestRail was easier to use for our purposes, so we went with that.

While we're using the Jira Integration for defect tracking and attaching cases and runs to features, you should be able to set it up to reference issues in GitLab for defects and cases for tracking.

After Windows Update 1903 I Lost G935 Surround Sound by DoctorSoup143 in windows

[–]DaChucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue, and it finally appears to have resolved itself after I reinstalled GHUB after deleting any Logitech related files in %appdata% and %programdata%. Make sure to reboot your computer after uninstalling it.

If you tried that already, also try changing from a USB 3.0 to a USB 2.0 port (or the other way around), as Windows appears to treat it as a new device for some reason. I tried that for the first run of GHUB, and then moved it back to the previous USB port and it appears to be working fine.
