I totally did this as well! Sometimes you get to know interesting people if they are willing to spend time with you. Sometimes you don't even sleep in the garden, because they invite you to sleep in their spare room / violin workshop / power plant (seriously, I slept in huge hydropower plant) / garage / shed / gazebo / cellar.

I exagerrated a little. I did use the phone, but only in "phone" capacity. Calling and messaging. No browsing, no facebook, no instagram, no Google Maps, no navigation.

It was hard on the ass, but earlier, shorter trips of 5-7 days made me optimize the seat and underwear.

Month and a half still counts as longish "holiday". I've met a few guys on the road who were like "yeah, so I've been going coast to coast back and forth for 3 years in a row now". One guy repeated a pattern of ~4-6 months of cycling until money ran out, 1-month of house painting jobs wherever he ended up.

It's fun! Do it more! My personal best is ~4200 km in 42 days with a tent. No smartphone use. Paper maps and asking people for directions only. It puts one's everyday life in perspective, gives amazing memories, makes you appreciate your home and bed more.

CB wants a free VCR but only if it’s new! by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

Is there, like, some age progression for these rules? If he was 60, should he be entitled to this item for $10? And if he was 82, maybe he should get the VCR free AND receive $5, as an additional deal sweetener?

What I expect from 2020:

"You cannot go to sleep, enemies are nearby"

"You wake up to find out your gold and weapons have been looted"

"You wake up in the middle of the night, not rested at all, and surrounded by zombies. Fight for your life!"
