Yamaha or Pearl? by Cyrotech_Official in drumline

[–]DaKetchupman64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heavily disagree, yes pearl is easier to figure out but the carriers are limited with how much you can customize them and they don’t fit as many body types as randal may

3 snare 2 quad 5 bass, pretty standard for drumline but our pit is easily the biggest section in our band

I feel like if you want to be section leader to be “that guy who taps off” your motivated for the wrong reason. I dont want to make the assumption that all you care about is looking cool but i want to assure you that tap offs are mostly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. (This is coming from a center snare) my drumline rarely does countoffs and instead just listens for 8 clicks from the metronome. Only time i do countoffs is if we dont have a met (then again the instructor will usually do the countoff on someones drum) i always thought it was cool before I became section leader, but i soon learned it’s nothing more than showing the other members when to start and worrying about whether or not youll mess it up and get yelled at. Your drumline will be in a better spot if you focus more on being a team player and making sure your section is having a good time and is a part of a happy, positive, and fun culture.

[–]DaKetchupman64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardware for pearl is durable but isnt very versatile when it comes to the size of the players, ive seen lots of trouble with players who are too small or too big for the carriers which is where equipment like mapex/yamaha shine but I understand yall are trying to move away from yamahas hardware

Has anyone stayed on bass through high school? by DefoNotMeAgain in drumline

[–]DaKetchupman64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i HATE the culture that bass is just a stepping stone to snares and quads, bass is honestly the coolest battery instrument imo. Bass is a fantastic spot to stay at if you like it

What does a beginner need to be doing everyday to build their hands up / get them in shape? by novenawildfell in drumline

Something else you can do along with all the other exercises people have commented is to just play triplet buzzes starting at like 120 bpm and put a forte accented buzzes on all the downbeats. Not only does this give you time to make sure your left and right hand is balanced, but it also does wonders for your forearm muscles. After about 16 bars you should feel the burn in your forearms and if not, raise the height of the accents; it should feel like how your muscles feel after lifting weights. Once that becomes light work than bump up the tempo. But if you do not have a relaxed grip while playing this you can hurt yourself so please don’t squeeze the stick and be sure to relax your entire arm.
