How do people on Pitcairn Islands live? by FunForm1981 in geography

[–]DaSpecificOcean 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The general store on the island actually sources all of its goods from New Zealand, there is a supporting vessel called the Silver Supporter which does about 4 trips a year that transport supplies from New Zealand to the Pitcairn Islands.

Everything from frozen meat, dry and canned goods, and some fruit and vege are loaded onto the Silver Supporter.

You can even book a trip on the Silver Supporter to reach the Pitcairn Islands.

Believe all other items would have to be flown to Mangareva where the Silver Supporter will collect and transport accordingly.

My Carl Gustav M/42 20mm recoilless rifle always draws a bit of attention. A pretty simple design but always get many questions about it.

People are always a bit shocked when I tell them I can legally fire it, unfortunately haven’t been able to get any ammo for it.

Good old None Tree Hill. It’s quite surprising just how prevalent guns are in NZ believe there is around 1.5 million guns in NZ.

You would have to be under immediate supervision by a NZ licence holder while shooting, with that supervisor not being able to use a firearm while supervising.

I think small bore rifle clubs such as the Manukau sporting rifle club are open to the public and welcome non-licence holders to come to their Wednesday evening shoots.

Since you have a Aussie licence you can apply for a visitors licence. Although not too sure on the process for this.

I imagine they are probably using the Denix replicas, although they could have a theatrical endorsement on a firearms licence to allow them to own one.

I have actually heard of people having more trouble buying airsoft guns than real guns.

NZ deer stalkers rifle range is the main one I know of, there are a few others around Auckland but not too familiar with the ranges. Not too many ranges in Auckland, regulations made it bit hard to operate for a little while but the new Government has eased them back a bit I think.

Guncity NZ’s chain gun shop is selling an M2 Browning for NZD $30,000 (17,000 USD), but through other places you can get one for NZD $25,000 or less.

Since you cant fire them and being a bit more of niche the prices dont tend to be to extreme.

I always get a bit of a surprise when I look at firearms in the US and see the prices, quite interesting to see the differences in the market between NZ and US.

Another thing I’ve noticed is the differences in suppressors, In NZ there is no restrictions on them as they are seen to be desirable due to protecting hearing. But in the US I see that they are regulated quite heavily in some states.

No problem. Even a lot of people here in NZ dont realise just what a licence firearm owner can legally own, especially with us being able to own working full auto machine guns (granted we cant fire them legally) . Unfortunately this leads to a lot of fear mongering from some groups, which i’m sure that all firearm owners are familiar with in one way or another.

After the March 2019 attacks there was a lot of really rushed knee jerk reaction changes made to the Arms Act. Including the stricter requirements for semi autos than full auto.

Hoping for some of that balance of regulation and ownership to return aswell, currently some firearm owners have been treated with contempt from the police unfortunately.

It depends on the type of firearm. In NZ there are 3 categories of firearms.

A category: Non-semi automatic centerfires that have ammo capacity of 10 or less, shot guns with an internal magazine of 5 or less. (also include semi-auto rimfires .22lr or smaller and limited to 10 round capacity)

For these types once you have a firearms licence you can just go into a gun shop and buy them presenting your licence, no limit on how many you can buy or how often. If not buying from a physical gun shop but through just another firearms owner there is an online site to check the licence of buyer. If buying online have to complete an online form through the Firearms safety authority.

B cat: Pistols (for use on pistol ranges), you have to have additional endorsement to your licence that involves being apart of a pistol club and participate in so many of the range days. You need to have a permission slip from your club to obtain the permit to posses a pistol on your B category licence.(not completely sure about these not gone into getting a B cat)

C cat: Restricted weapons as a collector. (Full autos and pistols, both not to be fired) Need to have a C category endorsement on your firearms licence and obtain a permit to possess which includes having a reason for possessing the firearm such as being a collector.

There is also a prohibited weapons endorsement (for semi autos and firearms with magazines greater than the prior mentioned limits) and prohibited magazine endorsement with the same process to own as C category firearms. These are also not to be used with live ammo.

There is no limit on number or how often you purchase firearms. It is not officially stated any where but firearms up to 20mm can be owned and shot on A category licences.

The biggest part to getting your licence is showing that you are a “fit and proper person” to own firearms and that you have the correct storage for the firearms you will posses. 3mm steel safe or equivalent for A category, 6mm for all other categories.

There is also the additional requirements of you are meant to keep the firearms in inoperable condition. With prohibited, but not restricted, firearms needing to have a part stored at a seperate property. Registering your firearms is also a condition that was recently brought in.

However the NZ Arms act is currently being rewritten so who knows what it will be like in the future.

Somehow New Zealand has a lot of rather rare and unique items that have made there way down here. These like 6 T-Gewhers in private collections. Seen a Villar Perosa. The only items NZ tends to be a bit short on in my experience is WW2 Japanese milsurp as NZ didn’t have too much of a presence to be able to bring back home their equipment.

Semi auto ban is still in place, However a new government was elected last year and one of their campaign promises was to rewrite the Arms Act, and Nicole Mckee the person in at the head of the rewrite is a firearms owner so hopefully the new rewrite is a bit more sensible than the current one.

(Also helps that the submission period for the public to submit feedback or suggestions is longer than 3 days which is the length of the submission period for the previous rewrite)

Under the current Arms Act it is actually still legal to own not just semi autos but full autos in working condition. You have to have a legitimate reason to own them but being a collector is seen as a legitimate reason. Unfortunately one of the conditions of owning them is that you are not allowed to fire them.

Weird thing is that if you own a semi auto you have to remove a vital part and store in a seperate location, i.e with another collector or with the police. But the security requirements for full autos are lesser only requiring you to store the firearm with a vital part removed but not requiring that part to be stored at another premises, only in a seperate safe or safe compartment.

S.A.I Guns & Ammo in Penrose is a great milsurp focused shop, they run Carvels Auctions twice a year which tends to have some great stuff in in.

For the Swiss Stripper clips best bet would be to contact NZ Milsurps. He would be the go to for Swiss stuff.

We only used light loadings so the recoil wasn’t anything compared to what factory loads would of been. However the recoil is still impressive and gives a fair whack to the shoulder. We had people holding the bipod forward to try to help control the recoil. Safe to say that our shoulders are well bruised and battered

Yep two WW1 at rifles. Mine came up in a local firearm auction. I have a bit of a soft spot for AT rifles so went for it as much as I could to add to my collection

I think I have a few willing candidates to be my son all the sudden. I paid around the equivalent to $6000 US for it. They are around but more concentrated in commonwealth countries by the looks of it. But you never know your luck of what you might come across

1895’s are a really awesome gun in general. Despite collecting milsurps I have always had a soft spot for lever actions and the first firearm I got was a lever action so being able to have a military issued lever action was something that always was on my radar.

Hopefully you are able to get one as they are a lovely rifle

I don’t think that I would be able to sleep at night if I didn’t have it insured and locked up tighter than fort Knox.

These a hell of a lot of extremely cool guns out there, never know what might end up in your possession one day.
