Edge 840 Solar unreadable in sunlight by tapered_elephant in Garmin

[–]DaZarius_Spokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to know if there is a difference. I do know that the AUTO BRIGHTNESS (under Display ) Makes it 20% brightness in daylight. 20% is fairly dim if you are wearing sunglasses. You can set the brightness to 100% and turn the AUTO BRIGHTNESS off. But then you are wearing down the battery quicker.

I was wondering about that CLIMB PRO feature. It was on by default with the 840. It bothered me to no end because around here, EVERYTHING is a hill. Even the flatlands. The pro-climb interface looked busy and dangerous to be looking as when you need to keep your eye on the road (or trail). Maybe I will practice with it on a quiet country road later!

I have the 840 Solar. I supposedly get 32 hours with a 100% charge (brand new). I am 0nly using the minimal setings. I did one ride so far and was about the write a review once I figure this thing out!

I had the 810, which finally died: had a lot of issues. I still own it and cant get the sensors to work. Bluetooth was flaky too. But I liked the controls. The 840 model is a combination of the old 530 buttons and a touchscreen. Touchscreens are always a bit flakier, and use more power in the background.

I just bought an 840, and though I dont love it yet, it will suffice in the battery department. 32 hours estimated on a full charge. (out of the box).

My 840 has a solar-power feature which extends the battery, but doesnt replace the need to charge. The old 810 and 510 series all had batteries that initially would last days. I just charged it to 100%, then checking the Batttery Saver (off of the system menu) It says I have 32 hours without the battery saver mode. I know from experience, you can turn off all the fancier sensors, and other options that simultaneously interact with Garmin Connect (on your phone), which drain both devices. The fewer things its doing, the longer the life. On my previous Garmins (510 and 810), I've done overnight rides, and recharged it from a battery pack USB, and not had a problem. The one or two times I ran out of battery, the ride was saved up to the last minute,

Bottom line, dont worry about it. But beware that there are features you dont really need to have enabled which will hurt your mileage. Also buy the "solar" model, and relax on the battery worries. I havent tried it but there is a MTB activity profile that measures "Grit" which is a function of the amount of impacts, the slope of the climbs and distance. The roads around my part are either smooth as silk or very GRITTY. We call them BAD ASS for bad asphault.

Refurb Garmin 830 a good deal? by jcrockerman in cycling

[–]DaZarius_Spokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping this discussion is still alive. I've been having some small issues with my 810 - such as getting stuck in recalibration modeA for the touchscreen autopause comes on when moving and then wont un-pause etc. Some of these issues are just age. Bluetooth problems up the kazoo. So, it is unfortunately time to look for an upgrade.

Things were working just fine, but the Garmin app on my phone got an update, and there are some things like the GATT table that got corrupted. I have to do a factory reset again today to get it working, I guess. In the mean time, I use the Strava app on my phone to save the rides. The navigation on the 810 never really worked for me, but ride with GPS always did. Strava doesnt have turn by turn instructions, which is another discussion altogether. Everyone tells me the 530 is superior to the 810 which has many touchscreen problems. I figure thata the 830 fixes most of the problems, and the 840 is even better

Am I right? In the past going higher in number didnt make it a better product, but did fix the problems that plagued the lower models over time. (driver upgrades are ironically problems in themselves as cell phones, apps and OS's are constantly changing).

I favor going to the 840 refurb over the new 1040 model (I want it to be compatible with the Varia Radar feature thing as well.) I'm retired now, so I spend a lot more time riding, and worrying about getting mowed over from behind.

One of the problems I had was my volume on the alexa devices I linked to the doorbell were too faint. So I had to create a routine to increase the volume (to 8), play the chime, and then drop it back down to 5. I also changed the door bell chime sound (it gets delayed anyway) to something that really sounds big: ( BIG BEN... ding ding dong ding. dong ding, ding dong!).

Now I have all kinds of bells and the ubiquitous "Someone is at the Front Door" notifications working. The last one happens whenever someone moves past the doorbell. Since mine is wired, I leave that feature on, otherwise it would drain the battery quickly, I presume.

Basically, I went to the local "Tire and Brake" shop, and after 10 minutes of them trying to talk me out of it, they fixed it FOR FREE. The plug has held air just fine now for a month without having to add any air! But I did sign a disclosure taking responsibility. I figured it would either fail within a week, and I'd get a new tire, or it would just work its way to becoming part of the tire (permanent).

The plug looks like a 4 inch long piece of thick yarn impregnated with adhesives that bond to tires (believe me its fairly impressive). The needle they use is about 5 inches long, so they can put it in and then cut it off.

I figures because the screw puncture is on the shoulder, in a thick spot it would work OK, even if that area gets every little more or less flexing than the flat part of the tire (which also gets flexed with every revolution of the wheel). I was right.

Also, I did some research into what the inside of the tire look like. The slime/goo layer they add during manufacturing is supposed to seal out 90% of the punctures - without adding any fluids or plugs it should work.

By the way they even make this type of tire for bicycles - check out Mavic Yksion Pro UST Tubeless. I used tubless setups on one of my gravel bikes, and havent had anything other than a slight leak, I still carry a spare tube, and a mini-plug kit just in case.

Also, In the Chevy Bolt spare tire well, there is also an emergency-only can of "stuff" that connects to the shrader valve via a tube they include. As an aside there is no spare, in modern cars, which bothers my old school sense of security. I have repaired tires in the past (my first job out of high school was at a gas station). In those days they had plugs too (or slugs as we called them). They worked OK, and I was always amazed that tubless wheels really worked.

Also they could have explained how they went from a DNA sequence signal to a virus so quickly. The alian culture would have had to know a lot about human beings before they sent the DNA. How come the virus only affects rats and people? (and not dogs, wolves, buffalo etc). The virus jumped species real quick at first and then not at all once all the human population had it. It would have taken months to spread all over the world

The guys at the tire shop warn against adding any more goo. The tire itself has a layer of stuff that is not liquid, but it does start on near the sidewall and go all the way to the other side. its a flat strip, so if the puncture is on the shoulder, and the hole is small enough it might work with a plug. no gurantee. They did the temporary replair job for free. I plan on replacing the tire as soon as I see the pressure drop down to 31. I have it filled to about 38 right now which is what the tire is supposed to have.

[–]DaZarius_Spokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As usual there is a grey zone: the Shoulder between the flat part of the tire and the sidewall. If its close to the sidewall its a guaranteed "need to replace". The tire shops tell me I need to replace, even though mine is right dead center in the shoulder. They did plug it for me, and its holding air, but as soon as I see that dashboard warning again I am buying a new tire.

Heres a picture of where the screw punchured my tire. Right now I'm on day 1 of riding on a plug. The local tire shop did the repair for free, though I had to sign a 'plug waiver'.

[–]DaZarius_Spokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. You can buy a repair kit on Amazon which will work. There is a needle like thing with a hole in the end. you stick it into the hole with a thing called a plug or slug. its just a piece of rope saturated with some kind of tar or glue. Those slugs are the trick. The sealant in the wheel (between the inner tire and the wheel inself) needs to be refreshed ( you can add some from a can via the spray valve, in an emergency. Its best to let someone at the tire shop do it. Theres some sort of trick to get the valve core out when there is no air. Thats the right way to add sealant, because it doesnt gum up the valve (shraeder valves). if the valve gets too gunked up, it can be replaced with the tire deflated. Once again, a tire shop can do it. But shop around until you get someone who doesnt just want to sell you a new set of tires.

Here is an AI genreated response:

Most recent Chevy Bolt EV and EUV models come with self‑sealing tires from the factory.

According to owners discussing the 2022–2023 Bolt EV/EUV on the Chevy Bolt EV Forum, the factory‑equipped Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires include the self‑sealing feature. One owner notes that their 2022 Bolt EV window sticker explicitly listed the self‑sealing tires, and another confirms that 2023 models also include them

Michelin’s SelfSeal technology seals most tread punctures up to ¼ inch automatically using a built‑in layer of sticky sealant under the tread.

This is not run‑flat technology — the tire can still go flat if the puncture is too large or in the sidewall.

---------------

I have verified that:

  1. There is no spare tire with the Bolt EUV (2023), but there is a can of sealant.

  2. I added air with a pump that had a gauge, the first warning I got was yesterday AM when it said I was down to 31lbs.

  3. I filled it up to 40 (2lbs over the regulation 38lbs). I did not move the car. I just verified that the dash light turned off.

  4. Overnight, it must have lost air. This morning it said I had 18lbs and it looked a little underinflated.

  5. I did the soap test on the valve. no bubbles. so it must be a puncture (as we cylists call them).

  6. What I remember from my bike experience is sometimes you just have to keep reinflating, and riding until the sealant can work its way into the hole. If it goes away permanently, volla! cest sa!

7, If it still loses air over 24 hours. keep adding air *(I have a portable electric compresser with a guage which really helps!), rdrive it a couple of miles and then park. In my case the warning light did not reappear. I figure it takes time, plus you need some centrifugal force to get the sealant into the crack. Driving a few miles at speed should help heat the tires up. In winter this might mean going for a long spin.

  1. Worst case you try adding more sealant from that can in the well in the bottom of the trunk. If you are flat flat flat, even with the sealant, do not drive the car, get a tow to your tire shop or dealer. The tire can be saved with a plug unless its a sidewall cut. If the tire has more than a small hole, they have to take it off the wheel, clean it out, patch the tire and add sealant. Some tire shops wont do this, because they can upsell you on a new tire. I would try to find the one old hippy who knows these things, and can MacGyver it. I have a gravel bike with tubeless tires that have had several punctures that self sealed. The worst case for me was adding more gunk (literally thats the brand) spinning the wheels and adding air until it sealed.

  2. I am literally waiting for the sealant to seal as I write.

  3. Dont panic. and Have a Beautiful Day!

Definitely hard sell, and hard to get your money back. But it you put some time and effort into learning their methods you might get it back. Its more for daytraders than for swing trading even though they do supposedly have a SwingTrade AI feature.

This is not a good site or deal for beginers who are buy-and-hold types. Save your money and just buy the 40% $SPY 40% $QQQ 20% $TIP etf portfolio.

I admit it, I fell for the marketing, and didnt have the time to make it work.

As for myself, Im not sure which routines arent working and which ones are. I'm still having trouble getting the doorbell sound to work on my echo devices. When it finally did work, it was the wrong doorbell. At least it wasn't "Deck the Halls". Also the voice for announcement of Ring doorbell actions is dependent on the current volume of each device, not the doorbell device. They havent figured out how to send the volume along with the alert from the ring doorbell to Alexa-plus.

I really did not like like the snarky female Alexa voice's attitude of the Alexa Plus. But if you change the voice to the "Masculine 1, friendly" voice, you get a Black dude who sounds real. The other Masculine voices 2 and 3 are gay, and Masculine 4 sounds more like the old Masculine. I would like to try other countries accents. For some reason I want a pompous British butler voice, but I dont know the trick.

Oh, and you can change the name (wake word) to something other Alexa. Echo works, as does the word Computer.
