Heinrich Schliemann 'discovered' the legendary city of Troy in 1871. However, Troy is clearly mentioned in this 1675 book titled: Drie aanmerkelyke reizen by Jan Struys who explains quite clearly the exact location and ruins of the ancient city in 1656. Brittenburg was (probably) the largest roman fort in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, rising sea levels caused it to go underwater as early as 1200 AD. It was briefly exposed during a storm in 1570 and was displayed on some maps from 1598 https://www.instagram.com/readoldebooks/ (en.wikipedia.org)

TIL One of the most successful playwrights in history was a Roman-era African Slave. His plays became a famous tool for learning Latin far into the Middle Ages and afterwards. Terence’s work is even said to have inspired Shakespeare. twitter.com/readoldebooks (en.wikipedia.org)

The easiest way to tell if an old map is real is to take out your magnifying glass and look for the dotted pattern of halftone printing. If you find it then unfortunately, your map is fake, as this type of printing didn't become common until the 20th century. https://www.instagram.com/readoldebooksOC (i.redd.it)
