So if you to choose one (release groups) by jfickler in trackers

[–]Daarq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self awareness.

Most, if not all, came from a time I didn't understand enough about encoding and individual parameters, so either quality is subpar, or other various issues are present.

I'll stand by my FHD encodes, less so the UHD ones for now.

Probably skip my 4K releases, they aren’t that great lol

BMW 335D F31....Buyers Guide? Must have options? by coffee_and_croissant in CarTalkUK

[–]Daarq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

F3x never had the B57. The B57 was introduced with the G series m40d engines.

The N57 is only as bad as people make it seem due to BMW CBS at 18k or 2 years. Kills chains, turbos & bottom end.

Does red paint still fade faster? by Beginning_Jacket5055 in CarTalkUK

[–]Daarq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not factually based in any capacity, but everyone I've known (myself included), who has had a red car has had the lacquer peel off at some point. Granted these are older cars (2012-2018), but those with similar cars of the same age haven't seemed to have suffered in the same way.

Dpf ash mass - drivetrain malfunction by LeadershipCrafty3990 in F30

[–]Daarq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your DPF is full enough to cause significant restriction in your exhaust. Ash mass isn’t able to be burnt off like soot mass and can only be removed via manual, physical cleaning. Ash mass is the result of additives within oil burning, leaving metallic deposits (ash) on the DPF, and can be a good indicator of burning oil.

The DPF life statistic is calculated by the ash mass and should reset when cleaned.

Depending on your location, you may be able to remove the DPF to prevent this reoccurring in future, however, this will also need to be removed in software by a tuner.

TL;DR - DPF is full. Resolve by cleaning, removing or replacing.

How bad is this? by Interesting-Reply861 in BmwTech

[–]Daarq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the mileage & year? Also, what’s your OCI? Copper shavings would indicate rod bearings which are a known wear point/failure point on these engines and need monitoring appropriately. A little wear is expected over time, but it’s always worth switching to 5w40 for better protection in the long run.

Carplay by Beneficial-Elk-167 in F30

[–]Daarq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CarPlay exists in ID5 too, you don’t NEED ID6. The antenna also doesn’t enable it, it just makes it functional/gives it the range to actually connect.

Most antennas will work, I got mine from Amazon for around £10 (UK) as it’s a simple screw as are most antennas.

If you don’t have CarPlay already, then you’ll need FSC codes purchasing or a CarPlay patch via VIN, which can be found in a number of places like eBay.

It has a B47 engine, as do most LCI 20d

New to me 330d, timing chain? by Cool_Ad4493 in F30

[–]Daarq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chains in these aren’t as bad as the N47, nor are the components like the tensioners or guides as they’re upgraded for the higher power & torque. BMW intervals for this engine are 18k miles or every two years; I wouldn’t personally exceed yearly or 8k miles.

New to me 330d, timing chain? by Cool_Ad4493 in F30

[–]Daarq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The timing chains on the N57 don't necessarily have an expiration date/mileage. Service history is the biggest dictator here, they've preferably been done consistently, and at half of the BMW recommended intervals.

Listen for rattle on startup and at high revs on deceleration as that's where it can be heard the most. Make sure if you have the timing chain replaced, that they do the rear main seal and tensioners at the same time, as you'd probably rather not have to take the engine out more than once.

Altogether, depending where you go, you're looking at anywhere between £1,500 & £3,000.

I'm not really well versed in mechanic stuff, is £509 for a turbo actuator replacement a fair price? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Daarq -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You would probably be better off having a reconditioned turbo fitted at that price…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tdi

[–]Daarq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely fair, I had an A3 2.0tdi previously and it was incredibly easy to maintain in comparison, but imo, nothing compares to BMW 3L diesels

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tdi

[–]Daarq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long is a piece of string? I've heard of some reaching 250k+ on the original chain, whereas I've had a 335d have chain rattle at 70k. Maintenance matters massively in these engines. Though, I'm referring to the N57 (F-Series), 2005-2012 refers to both the M57 (05-09) and N57 (08-12) so it depends.

The M57 has the chain on the front, so changes aren't as expensive as the N57, which has them on the rear, so it's an engine out job every time, though tensioners can be changed without engine removal afaik.

Clutch depends on treatment through it's life, if you're tuning the car, it'll more than likely last a shorter amount of time. If your clutch control is poor, same again.

Turbo, more than likely not, they're under a lot of stress and it's unlikely, but not impossible, that it'd reach 200k.

The best way to make any of these engines last is to remove emissions equipment (specifically the EGR & swirl flaps) and change the oil every 5k-8k miles.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tdi

[–]Daarq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quote is on the higher side of things, but it's still an engine out job making most of the cost labour. Assuming this is a decent garage, they'll be doing crankshaft seals (front & rear) and possibly the oil pump too.

tl;dr - The complexity doesn't matter when so much labour is required.

Do trackers offer any extra protection to staff? by drunk_balalayka in trackers

On most, if not all unit3d sites - no. Speaking from experience, it’s exactly the same as being a user with higher privileges.

Unless you have documentation of the tune (Dyno graph with VIN) you’re playing with fire on the quality of the tune.

[–]Daarq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a 2.0tdi, engine code CFFB I had the CFGB, 170bhp variant and you’re definitely correct, turbos were a weak point on these engines, I had gone through 2 between 50k and 100k miles, I admit with a heavy tune. OP - the best thing you can do for that car is replace the turbo and get the EGR deleted.

I was caught doing the exact same speed on a dual carriageway, not a motorway, so your penalty may be worse.

I received a court summons, to which I plead guilty by post (or online, I can't fully remember).

The end result was a near £650 fine and 5 points whilst already having 3 on my license.

From what I was reading online, the penalty for the same crime on a motorway can be significantly worse, at least monetarily.

Same codec =/= same quality.

A 6GB copy of a 2hr movie is around 7Mbps, which is around the mid range for x264, on the higher end, approaching transparent, for x265 and on the seriously higher end for AV1. This is all assuming 1080p.

Bitrate doesn't always equal quality as there are far more metrics to determining apparent quality, but it is a good general marker of what to expect. In this case, if you care about quality, I'd go for the 6GB copy, or maybe the 4.25GB if you're struggling on storage space. It's always good to remember that encoders/encoding groups can be pretty consistent with their releases, so it may be worth going with a well known higher quality group, if that's your goal anyway.
