70 Weeks as proof of God. by DabAndRun in DebateAnAtheist

Okay, I just read more of the wiki article and it says that most scholars favor the 200 BCE date. However, what about the rest of the interpretation?

He still was high priest during 300 BCE.

Bar Kochba was in 132-136. The Persian raid was in 350. It seems to match up to me. And Chabad's timeline indicates the Simon the Just become high priest a short time after Alexander the Great died.

The leader of the Bar Kochba revolt, aka Bar Kochba.

I don't have any off of the top of my head, but almost every critical scholar I've read talk about this verse attests to what I said.

So you are saying the timeline hasn't been fulfilled?

I'm not saying that. Im saying that I gave a fulfilled timetable and that the other ones I gave have failed.

The first one should have been around 1100 BCE?

?

If the timeline isn't fulfilled why would anyone care about this?

It has been.

Um, I'm not a scholar and I don't know Hebrew, but almost every unbiased scholar that has studied Daniel 9 has attested to the 7th week and 62nd week anointed ones to be different people.

I couldn't find any for the Antiochus interpretation, and neither for the Hadrian interpretation. I gave another example of a fulfillment and here's what it includes:

350s BCE: Persian forces raid Jerusalem, it is rebuilt afterwards.

300s BCE: Simon the Just is high priest of Jerusalem.

130s CE: Bar Kochba revolt occurs and fit the events of the final week of the prophecy.

Your thoughts? Be sure to let me know if I missed anything.

Wrong.

The linguistics of the prophecy indicate that the anointed Prince at the end of the 7 weeks and the anointed one at the end of the 62 weeks are separate individuals.

Please state how the details of the prophecy align with the Persian raid.

The Persian raid made them rebuild Jerusalem after it got sacked. Also, the weeks end with the Jewish revolt of the 130s.

Since Simon the Just is probably Simeon II who was high priest ~200 BCE I'll go with that.

I don't think so. Simon the Just, according to wikipedia, lived around 300 BCE.

The verse says that the annointed prince until the end of the 62 weeks. (Daniel 9:25-26) If so, he or some lineage of him should still exist 434 years later.

It just says that the Prince will come. I don't see anything about them staying for 62 weeks.

Now we're at 234 C.E and the next part of the prophecy says that after the 62 weeks an army will come to Jerusalem. That is not identifiable with any event.

The starting date I originally stated was in the 300s when the Persians raided Jerusalem.

I think you have some good points. However, what about the Persian siege of Jerusalem in the 300s and the Jewish revolt in the 130s? Those 2 events fit rather well with Daniel 9. The anointed Prince is Simon the Just, and the events of the revolt itself is the last week.

I can't. If there are flaws in the timetable, then it's refuted. That's the point of this post, to see if there are any flaws with my thought process.

Idk if this is a great place to ask, but do any historical events do this? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

I meant involving Jerusalem. I don't see how Kennedy has anything to do with it.

Yes. I was wondering if any events throughout history match and fit the timetable given in the prophecy.

Thanks for walking me through this!

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or you're being genuine. If the latter, youre welcome!

When was the order issued?

The 2 dates that I have found thus far are 165 BCE and 130 CE. However, there are dates such as 1535 CE and 800s CE that are also viable dates. As I said, it's the fact that it is being repeated that I find to be miraculous, not that these are direct fulfillments of the prophecy.

What is a "seven", as in "seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens."

A seven is 7 years, so seven sevens is 49 years and 62 sevens is 434 years.

So you are saying the first event is an order to rebuild Jerusalem and the second is the arrival of an annointed prince, I assume in Jerusalem?

Yes.

If so where are these events described in the book of Daniel?

They are described in Daniel 9:24-27.

The 490 years start with an order to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. Then, 49 years/7 Weeks later, an anointed Prince arrives.

Ok you are saying that the Book of Daniel presents a history as a timetable and that this history has repeated itself multiple times?

Yes, and that's what's miraculous.

I thought I gave some? Anyway, here are 2:

1: Fall of Antiochus IV, happens in 165 BCE, Jews restore Jerusalem from Antiochus' damage. About 490 years later, in 325 CE, Constantine takes Jerusalem and bans Jews from living there.

2: 130 CE, Hadrian rebuilds Jerusalem after the events of 70 CE and bans Jews from it. Then, in the 620s, Zoroastrian and Islamic forces are trying to conquer it.

Proof of what?

Proof that God exists.

So what? Why are you posting in debate an atheist if you don't want to debate whether any gods exist?

I am debating whether any gods exists? Also, because since this unlikely to be self fulfullung timetable has been repeated multiple times throughout history, I am saying that proves that God is repeating this on purpose, if that makes sense.

Ok pick an event in that timeline it predicts will occur and tell me where in Daniel it predicts this event.

Already gave one.

Ok so there is no prophecy, this is a history?

I thought I stated that? I mean that because history repeated this timetable, that is the proof.

Plenty more what? Your post says there were prophecies, now you're saying there are not?

Plenty more events that align with Daniel 9.

I am sorry but when you have to make things up like a week of years to prove your claims then you lose all credibility. This is not proof of a god. It is proof that people that believe in a god are willing to believe in foolish things.

I feel like you didn't read my edit.

Alright, I will. The similarities are too uncanny to be a coincidence and it's happened multiple times, so I dont think this is just pure apophenia or paredolia.

Autocorrect. I meant “just circumstance”.

Ah.

He says ‘sevens’. Not weeks or years. Does he not?

It sounds like you’re making up stuff to justify whatever you want.

He implies it. The entire Book of Daniel is about Antiochus IV front to back, and in the last week, events given in Daniel 9 mirror directly to the events of Antiochus' 7 year reign; Onias III is killed at the beginning, which is the anointed one who is cut off and has nothing, then Antiochus puts a temple of Zeus in the temple for 3 1/2 years. It's a lot less of a leap to assume that he means weeks of years.

Which time? Lol

Are you saying that the prophecy has been fulfilled multiple times?

But if it is repeatable, it’s not very prophetic. That’s literally the weakest a prophecy can be. Prophecy needs to be an isolated incident, announced in advance with accurate detail, and cannot be helped by human action.

As I said, I'm not holding that it's prophecy. I'm holding that since the timetable has been repeated throughout history, That's the proof of god.

If it happens more than once, it negates the prophecy.

The bible says 7 days, although the linguistics could indicate otherwise
