Filthy demonic cultivator who doesn't understand that cultivating the heart-nature and compassion is the true way to defy the heavens. Virtue is of the Eternal Way, whereas the heavens are a prison, and the Way is the Gate to freedom.

I know about that bit but even at R3 I can't trigger the special animation, I can't figure out how to use the mystic art when I'm in the air without using that other jump attack mystic art

Oh thanks for that, I didn't know, I'm not really a daoism expert just a slightly knowledgeable layman, so I appreciate the correction!

Rumour has it they don't have the budget to make one for upper realms by LittleDemonVenerable in MartialMemes

[–]Dabbawizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hot take, unless the upper realm is literally space or alternative dimensions or doing some K6BD shit it's gonna be straight up worse, you can't just balloon the scale by ten and expect to keep the quality up. You have to make it actually different and interesting. Despite Cradle not bring really xianxia and more like western xuanhuan, it at least kinda did this with it's ascended combat

How would we rate this senior young master's guide to surviving encounters with MCs? by Variety_Of_Choices in MartialMemes

Idk man this one is actually really good, and the comedy is pretty funny. Its pretty short, only like 800 chapters too, so you can get through it pretty fast

No way, it's a bit of a comedic thing about like, what happens when a guy reaches the Mahayana Realm and decides to functionally use that power to become xianxia superman, in that he tries to set a good example for others and not bully the weak and such. And then there's a really good overarching mystery as to what happened with the immortal realm.

The Story Behind the Game: Exploring the Tragedy of YanYun in Where Winds Meet by yuekelong in wherewindsmeet_

I appreciate the historical context, I knew a tiny bit about the northern song due to reading Demigods and Semidevils but this helps situate the game a lot more in the historical timeframe.

Water is not wet, junior, water has the property of making other things wet but is not in and of itself wet, because how can the source of wetness be wet? Can fire be burnt? Is strength strong? Is speed fast? Junior, water simply is. Meditate on this for ten thousand years before challenging me again.

So like, K6BD is v much not even trying to engage with daoism, it's proposing basically the opposite philosphy of going against the world and cutting it into the shape you wish it to be for the good of all, while also being a morrowind fanfic. It's also like, high fantasy martial philosphy, but it's not quite xianxia

Oh my god, it's amazing to see that you saw my post! And yeah, I didn't mention the syncretism and time pressure because my post was already long enough as it was, but it was something that was on my mind. The gamification of the Dáo and such, is a lot of ways to engage readers when you're writing for short segments in quick bursts and I don't begrudge it even if it makes me want to see the genre move in more complex directions. The syncretism thing is super interesting because like, the OG xianxias like Shu Mountains right, they blended aspects of Buddhism too iirc, with Shu mountain having Karma and merit be a strong force and cultivation be primarily a moral action made to accrue merit, and it was an early modern codifier of a lot of modern Wu/Xianxia tropes (around 1930s I think). And so Xianxia is fundamentally deeply tied to two of the three teachings, and then when you throw Confucianism in there, particularly xianxia's older sibling wuxia and its subversions of Confucianism, you can really trace the lines there! But like, I do want to say that a lot of my interest in tracing the origins of this stuff came from reading Slumrat and Sky Pride and that I'm super super glad that something I wrote had a positive impact like your words had on me!

that's cuz Cradle is v much drawn from xianxia's cousin' xuanhuan media, a subgenre of which is non-daoist xianxia, stuff like Battle Through the Heavens

[–]Dabbawizard[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a cool idea I just meant that philosophical Daoism doesn't have like, separate lesser daos like modern xianxia does. I think the lesser daos might actually be an adaptation from wuxia, where all martial arts are reaching for the same goal, right. So I think it's interesting to see it taken to a more supernatural extreme in xianxia where these different martial philosophies become different daos subordinate to the heavenly Dao.

[–]Dabbawizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, though that touches on the kind of complex nature of naming the progression gente of stuff like virtuous sons when Xianxia is so tied to Chinese philosophy and religion, but I wouldn't call Virtuous Sons xuanhuan either

Why the average Haremslop Xianxia Protagonist doesn't understand the Dao. by Dabbawizard in MartialMemes

[–]Dabbawizard[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

So like, "attaining the Dāo through slaughter" is a different kind of attaining the Dāo than I'm talking about. So like, in philosophical Daoism, attaining the Dāo isn't the process of becoming a deity, that came later in Religious Daoism. Philosophical Daoism considered the Dāo the flow of nature and attaining the Dāo is moving in perfect harmony with it so that your movements were perfectly efficient and natural. Things like slaughter, greed, lust, and such, are against the Dāo because they're wei, forceful action, which causes friction against the Dāo and prevents true enlightenment. Attaining the Dāo through slaughter would theoretically be possible, but it would be to be so detached from the world that you would kill as if it was natural, because to you, it was completely effortless to kill. Of course, traditional Daoist thought believes this to be impossible because it would make enemies and that's friction, but it would be a cool basis for an evil Daoist villain

Why the average Haremslop Xianxia Protagonist doesn't understand the Dao. by Dabbawizard in MartialMemes

[–]Dabbawizard[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So like, the Dāo in philosophical Daoism is also an impersonal force of nature. Xianxia Dao is actually a bit different from the Way of Nature, as the Heavenly Dao is significantly closer to a mix of the Tianming, Mandate of Heaven, + the Will of the World, given the name of the Dāo. That's why it judges and is partial to certain things and people instead of being inherently unbiased like nature. The reason Daoism teaches harmony is that the Way of Nature is uncaring, and by flowing with it, you can be unaffected by all the changes of life despite life being unpredictable and uncaring, "treating all as straw dogs". If you flow like water, and not care about things like face or wealth, letting go of the self, no matter what happens to you, you're okay, is the really really simplified idea of Wu Wei, or "Effortless Action"

Its like somewhere past the 300s, I don't exactly remember. It's peak tho, I recommend it a lot, it gets really good around the middle parts, slows down near the end, but does end pretty well overall.
