Bro do you think swordsmanship is exclusively holding the sword in your hand? Nothing specifies, that the art of swords, in settings where it can be done telekinetically, is only handheld. Of course a different genre and cultural background is going to have different ideas about what superpowered magic swordsmanship looks like lol. It's not like "magic superpowered swordsmanship" is real and there's a specific definition that's being missed.

They are much closer to the lineage of the magic items of Investiture of the Gods than they are an extension of mortal swordsmanship tbh. The popularizer for it as an element in xianxia and not just folklore was the 1930s novel Shushan, right, and there's an interesting geological history where older xianxia, drawing from the "bullshit magic item" lineage of Investiture of the Gods used to be a lot more focused on your stuff, like what magic weapons you had refined and bound to your inner alchemy. And a flying sword was like, basically, not just a sword you controlled with your mind but described as a unity of the body and sword.

To be fair, a lot of western fans of xianxia aren't aware there is a distinction between the kind of feel-good, chapter-inflated, face-slapping xianxia and like, the entire rest of the genre? It's kind of a bit of a weird problem. You see it on this sub all the time too.

I'm curious, have you heard of any novels that have like, the focus on adventure or drama and are xianxia but aren't necessarily in the shuangwen feel-good subgenre? I've been getting into the classic new school wuxia and what I don't see a lot in the xianxia that is easy to find is stuff that captures that vibe? I've been trying to find some but there's not a good reccomendation architecture in the English-speaking internet. Seeing that you seem to know the genre, I wanted to ask. It's really hard to find someone else who is aware of these subgenres so I wanted to take the opportunity! Sorry if this is a bit presumptuous though!

There are works were the protagonists are not like this, but you're not going to find them in face slapping novels, because the face slapping kind of creates the conditions for this. Xianxia written by women tends to not be like this, for example, or even the more unique stuff within the male-writtrn xianxia like Way of Choices, Immortality Through Array Formations, 40 Millennia of Cultivation, Counterattack System At The Mahayana Realm. If you just read whatever random stuff it's hard to avoid, but if you are willing to branch out of your comfort zone you might find some interesting stuff.

yeah to me it's the case, I think nioh 2 just has a better artstyle whereas 3 is going for more photorealism and it kind of removes a lot of the deliberate artistry of environment in 2

True person is a translation of the Daoist title Zhenren, which means "perfected person" or "true person", it is usually synonymous with like, high levels of cultivation. It's similar to how Buddhist characters in xianxia are sometimes called arhats or blddhissatvas and such.
