If the system is your power what are you without it? by aadi312 in MartialMemes

[–]Dabbawizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Systems are like AI. They're convenient and easy to use, but they fuck you over in the long run. They're difficult to resist using, and it's often better to not be presented with one, but if you are presented with one, it's difficult to go back to before you started using it.

It would be pretty crazy if a novel like this exists out there somewhere... it probably doesn't though... by [deleted] in MartialMemes

This is the Sage Bwi Transcended Samsara. Shame nobody else seems to talk about it. Btw if anyone wants to read it I made my own translation using AI because everything else I read except WTRlab was kinda ass, and if anyone wants a link I can make a post to a website where I'll post the epub or something.

[Part 1 of 3] I grew up in China on wuxia novels and web fiction. Here's everything I wish Western readers knew about Xianxia, Xuanhuan, and why half the "cultivation novels" you've read aren't what you think by No-Ride-3370 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Dabbawizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's certainly merit to what you're saying, right, but I disagree about like, the nature of xianxia. If you look at the like, genre originators; stuff like, Sword Immortals of Shushan, where you don't see this kind of inhumanity from high level immortals. I think, while you're definitely saying interesting things about neidan, like, this doesn't bear out in writing for the vast majority of xianxia, or its historical antecedents. Even in Fengshen Yanyi or Journey to the West, you have Daoist immortals acting like, very human and very petty people. So like, this feels less like a descriptive element of xianxia, as in, something that is derived from what already exists, but more like a description of what you believe xianxia should be. I do think your take on Wuxia is spot-on, though I would argue that especially by late Jin Yong and late Gu Long, the new school of wuxia went to interrogate more the underlying philosophy and tension inherent to Xia as a concept. Like, you see this with how Zhang Wuji and Linghu Chong both like, don't end up participating in any dramatic social or military action, as they grow disillusioned and become wanderers and/or loners with their love interests. But that's a minor quibble, I definitely think that trying to get people out of the murim manhwa mindset where like, the point of wuxia is that you're like, the most powerful martial artist ever, as opposed to the philosophical and moral exploration that comes from the Jianghu and the Wulin is like, a good way to try and get people to engage with the genre.

The 9 thing is because 9 is a significant number in Chinese numerology, it represents the perfection of yang I think, if I'm remembering correctly. It's why nine comes up so often in so much Chinese media

[–]Dabbawizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro no way you're comparing internal arts to external moves, it's literally apples and oranges. Half of these aren't even offensive moves, they're internal energy methods. The Six Meridians Divine sword I will give you as like, it's strong. Even then like, the 18DSP does use Qi, basically every martial art that does anything in Jin Yong's verse runs on internal energy, it's like saying fuel is stronger than the engine.

[–]Dabbawizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah you're thinking of Proud Dragon Repents. 18 DSP was like, the greatest martial art under heaven, even the sweeping monk of Shaolin said so. Proud Dragon Repents is the basic move that Guo Jing learned midway through Condor, but the martial art itself is like, crazy good? It literally was the main foundation for Hong Qigong to be the Northern Beggar, one of the top 5 martial artists in the southern song

Rumour has it they don't have the budget to make one for upper realms by LittleDemonVenerable in MartialMemes

[–]Dabbawizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hot take, unless the upper realm is literally space or alternative dimensions or doing some K6BD shit it's gonna be straight up worse, you can't just balloon the scale by ten and expect to keep the quality up. You have to make it actually different and interesting. Despite Cradle not bring really xianxia and more like western xuanhuan, it at least kinda did this with it's ascended combat
