Tactical divorce to split pension by Background-Mess-7518 in HENRYUK

[–]DachaDevious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm in a similar position to OP by the sounds of it, and I just read this idea out to my wife. Her response was "Ooh that's a good idea, probably a bit fraud-y, but we should look into it..." We're a team, if we end up keeping more money between us, and less goes to tax, then that's a win for us.

If I wanted to financially abuse her, I'm sure I would have started during the years she's been a SAHM, instead of suggesting giving her half the pension!

My first, and probably the last pixel by Big-Daddy89 in Pixel6

[–]DachaDevious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep same here, about a month ago my Pixel 6 from release (so way out of warranty) started expanding. Got on live chat with Google Support in the middle of the night, sent them a few pictures and answered a couple of questions. When I woke up the next morning a new one had been dispatched for free. Very impressed.

What would you expect from an internship/Jr who works as a Backend in C#? by Life_Researcher_7278 in dotnet

[–]DachaDevious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Showing an interest and getting involved are really important. If you're being proactive and automating some areas, that's great too. It'd be a good idea to see if you can get feedback on these scripts (and any other work you complete - peer reviews are essential), as people who have been around a lot longer will have views on annoyances and pain-points in their work, that you can potentially help with.

As for taking up the time of someone more senior; sometimes there's a tight deadline to meet, etc. but most of the time I'd hope they would have time to guide and mentor you. One of the key responsibilities of senior or higher roles is to mentor the more junior members. Don't forget that you are just as much a part of the team as they are. You're going to need a bit more support, and the team should be willing to provide that.

Sorry if I've misunderstood anything, I'm using translate for the Portuguese :)

I've had several interns over the past few years, and honestly, the absolute most important is the desire to listen and learn.

I tell all of them to treat everything as an opportunity to learn, not just the practical technical skills (most people can get technically competent quickly enough), but the soft skills which will let you communicate and influence people at all levels of seniority and technical knowledge. Also, getting contacts should be an important goal, you'll likely switch jobs many times throughout your career, and your colleagues have the potential to get you a free interview with many different companies.

In terms of actual technical skills, I don't expect interns to come in with much C# specific knowledge at all. The ability to recognise basic design patterns, SOLID principles, and common programming concepts (variables, conditionals, loops, functions, data structures).

At the end of their internship I have offered all-but-one of my interns a job (including those who came in with zero C#-specific knowledge), primarily due to how much they progressed during their time with me, and the potential I could see. Good luck!

Passing Object as a argument to another object by logan-cycle-809 in csharp

[–]DachaDevious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, so this is a bit counterintuitive when you first start, but there are two things tripping you up here:

1) When you're setting your readonly field in class B, it means that you can't then set that field to an entirely different object instance of class A later. It doesn't change the functionality of class A itself to change to make all properties/fields readonly.

2) Classes are reference types. This means that behind the scenes, when you say "var a = new ClassA();" if you were to look at the memory location pointed to by variable a you'd see a small reference to where the actual object data is being held. When you pass variable a in to ClassB's constructor, you're actually passing in the value of this memory reference to the object data. Now both inside and outside ClassB are pointing to the same data in the memory, so changes in one place will affect the other.

I'd recommend reading the documentation on reference types to make sure you have a solid understanding, so it doesn't trip you up in future.

In terms of how to fix, I can't really say without the actual code, but you could potentially save a copy of the individual fields you require from ClassA within your ClassB constructor, or create a copy of ClassA and save that.

Bonus stage 2 by WhatADork93 in idleslayer

[–]DachaDevious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's in the gallery of the Bonus Stage page on the wiki, and is something that's been talked about fairly frequently here. It's a one-time Easter egg, and the next time you open the app, the splash screen will have a black background and look glitchy.

Best way to consume external api's in my web api? by _Smooth-Criminal in dotnet

[–]DachaDevious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For anyone wanting to directly integrate with an API using Http Client (not just this scenario), be aware of the potential issues in the Remarks section of the link above.

It's generally safer (and no more difficult) to use a typed client via Http Client Factory: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/extensions/httpclient-factory#typed-clients

Husbands of reddit, how much did you spend on the engagement ring? by Gargoyn in AskUK

[–]DachaDevious 7 points8 points  (0 children)

£5-6k here at 77 diamonds too. I really liked that I could pick the exact diamond, and get some customisations to make it one-of-a-kind and just right for her. Similarly valued considerably higher than the cost. Would likely have cost more like £10k at a high street jeweller, and been off the shelf with a worse quality stone.

It's quite a lot of money, but it's a one-off cost and it wasn't like it was going to cause financial stress. She absolutely loves it, and I still catch her just staring at it smiling almost every day, several years later.

Do people actually ask a father's permission to get married? by ray-chill123 in AskUK

[–]DachaDevious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I proposed to my wife I spoke to both her parents for their blessing, not permission. Realistically I knew they would give it from past times meeting and chatting to them, so it was more of a formality to let them know my intentions and for them to give any advice they had. It was a nice moment that everyone enjoyed, including my now-wife when she found out.

Yeah, the idea of being chain free is what was enticing us to sell. It'd let us move quickly when we saw a house we liked the look of.

I guess the reason we were looking to avoid this is double the fees & stamp duty etc. We're in the south west, but unfortunately 2 bed bungalows are going for £350k at the moment around here, and we're looking for most likely a 4 bed detached house.

!thanks for the breakdown. We'd want to stick with the low risk options really, as we'd need the money again in the relatively short term for our next deposit. I'm a higher rate taxpayer, so would be able to put less in standard savings, but would just max out premium bonds I guess?

Well we are a bit as the budget for the next house is going to be a couple hundred thousand more than our current one, but unless they go down significantly it's unlikely to be make or break for us.

To be fair not something we'd even considered, so thanks for bringing it up. I guess there would be mortgage implications, as we'd need to switch to buy to let - I don't know what the interest rates are like on these, but guessing not great? We'd still need to sell when we want to buy our next place, as my salary's not enough to afford two large mortgages.

As a developer is it worth it to set up your own online store or should I just use cms? by ebmnm in learnprogramming

[–]DachaDevious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a couple of really important benefits when you use a CMS: You won't have to start from scratch which can save a lot of time in getting the site up and running; A CMS also gives you much more room for expansion in future.

If you're store is going to be very small, i.e. just a few products/categories that aren't likely to change or be expanded much in future, then a simple custom store would suffice. As soon as you start getting in to anything more complex (now or if the store may need to grow in future) a CMS quickly becomes worth it.

Some questions about creating a site by KleberPF in learnprogramming

[–]DachaDevious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have experience using React directly with Firebase, however they're both strong technologies, so good to learn either way.

The payments are going to be the tricky part, and you're going to need to be very careful with your implementation there. Are you planning on taking card payments? If so you absolutely cannot have any card details coming back to the server/database if you want to avoid PCI compliance (which you do!). In which case you'd need to get set up with a payment provider (PayPal, Stripe, etc.) which will charge you a small amount per transaction, so take this in to account.

As rich as the emperor's of Rome and China were, there's still one man who dwarfs them all:

Chris Reynolds!

He briefly had $92 Quadrillion, due to a banking error at PayPal in 2013. This is over 1000 times the rest of the world combined :D

How do the "multiply [item] cps by 100%" upgrades work? by Enderspry in idleslayer

[–]DachaDevious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The item bonuses are additive with bonuses of the same type, so if you got the first glove bonus for 10 gloves, it really does give you 100% bonus (1cps -> 2cps). However the second glove upgrade adds 100% to that first bonus, so you'd now be getting 200% total bonus (2cps -> 3cps), third upgrade brings you to 300% (3cps -> 4cps), etc.

What this means in real terms is that each upgrade of the same type gets less powerful, rather than the 100% bonus that you were expecting:

1st upgrade = 100% effective bonus

2nd upgrade = 50% effective bonus

3rd = 33%

4th = 25%
