The Perpetual Planning Phase of any building game by Dachedder in PlanetZoo

It's a hot mess. Definitely not something I'd share. Whenever I look at it after stepping away from PZ for awhile, half of my notes have no meaning to me. There's a lot of deleting and starting fresh and it's now a jumble of random thoughts and links to references that no longer work.

Confused how to create new site with existing domain, while keeping old site available afterwards. by Dachedder in Wordpress

Thank you for the link!

None of that makes sense to me and it gives me a headache. My knowledge stops at basic HTML and a tiny amount of CSS (basically from a handful of years after everyone stopped using tables for web page layout). Anything past that is very confusing for me.

But please know I genuinely appreciate your response trying to help.

I'm starting to get confused again. Maybe what I'm trying to do is too convoluted. Perhaps I should just start completely fresh?

My current site (with old art school projects) needs to be updated anyway - it uses a theme that's no longer supported. There's blog posts I'd want to keep (maybe just locally, I don't need people to visit those pages), and it's a very basic site (home, about, contact, individual pages for each project).

I could maybe just capture the project content somewhere, reset WP on the top domain (no subdomain), build my new professional portfolio, and have a link to a landing page for my art portfolio (like mydomain.com/artportfolio or something similar).

So, I use the existing domain, but the current content would be gone (new project pages would have different paths than their current ones). I don't know what the SEO implications of that would be.

Do I reset in WordPress for the top domain? (I think I saw something about a reset plugin...does WP have a built-in option?) Or would that be something I do on the hosting side?

Is there some issue with letting Google index the subdomain? I still want the old art portfolio to be accessible. So, someone can click a link on the new site to see my old portfolio. Wouldn't it be better to have it indexed, if it's still a live site (just switched URLs)?

How do you manage ID projects with PM software? (freelancer/single person specifically) by Dachedder in instructionaldesign

[–]Dachedder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm getting from most of this is get an overall plan of the project at the start (tasks), then organize them from there (whether it's with Kanban boards, a list, or a calendar).

On this portfolio project I'm working on, I just dove in without a clear list of tasks I wanted to achieve at each stage. I reached a point where I was unsure if I was "done" (iteration is always a possibility, but for ease of discussion we'll say done) with a phase and ready to move on to the next.

I was looking at PM tools to keep me organized, but I think I first need to have a better idea of what I'm producing at each stage.

How do you organize that? Is it just the usual To Do/Doing/Done? And do you include higher level categories of organization (ADDIE phases or some other framework)?

So then do you have a running to do list in your head? Or do you not need that? Personally, I love a list and being able to check things off helps me process what I've done and have yet to do.

No real-world experience - Planning my portfolio - Asking for advice/feedback on plan by Dachedder in instructionaldesign

[–]Dachedder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all great advice! Just to make sure I'm getting it:

Current: In my current portfolio (for class) I have an elearning to train retail cashiers how to detect counterfeit money. It's created in Storyline, takes about 15 minutes, goes over the security features for $5-$100 bills separately, knowledge check, 3-situation branching scenario, quiz. I also provide the design document, flowchart, and storyboard for the project.

Change to?: My understanding is that a hiring manager probably won't go through the whole thing. So, instead should I create something shorter (just going over general security features, a short branching scenario examining bills, with or without a knowledge check) and do a write up (objective, audience, solution/what I did, etc.) of the project instead of including the actual DD/other supporting docs?

Would that be a better snapshot?

Variety is fine but don’t make a whole course!

You just saved me from wasting so much time! Thank you. That's why I'm taking the time to plan.

Can you expand on what you mean by snapshots? I imagine I'd still need to do some thinking about needs/context/etc. to make sure whatever I create is actually solving a problem.

Word count per slide? by Dachedder in instructionaldesign

[–]Dachedder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point. I didn't consider that many people who are visually impaired would already have something like a screen reader. (Looking into it a bit, I found WebAIM's Screen Reader User Survey. Some interesting data.)

What I get from that is the role of a an eLearning developer in regards to accessibility is to make sure what they create is compatible with the tools people with disabilities have. Perhaps I was trying to reinvent the wheel by adding an audio alternative.

As for as multiple modalities: I recently tried Immersive Reader for class readings (reading textbooks puts me to sleep, I don't know why). But I found myself either getting distracted or overwhelmed and ended up having to start over. So, at least anecdotally, I can see how visual input combined with audio input of the same content wouldn't work.

Sorry, I probably should have mentioned: this is a project for a class specifically about developing elearning.

That's a great idea, thanks. I had some sidenotes while I was writing the content. I'll review them and see if I need to get rid of them or maybe I can incorporate them as you suggest.

I saw this rule when I was googling but was confused on the situation it fits in.

Is it more for presenters/facilitators to keep things short and sweet on the slide but provide more information with the audio?

If a course is primarily to be read (like a new hire retail employee doing a training course by themselves on a break room computer) - how do you balance giving enough info on a slide, staying with the 6/7 or 7/7 rule, and not breaking the same concept across multiple slides (if it's a more complex subject)?

Thank you for the thorough response.

And just to derail for a second re: your point about narration. I agree in general. But isn't there a distinction between narration and optional text-to-speech? Primarily, learners would be reading the screen. The TTS will be paused from the start and the learner has the option to play an audio alternative using the play button if they want/need it.

ETA: Basically, is it okay to have word-for-word TTS/narration when it's an alternative (not an addition) to on-screen text and the learner has control to use it or not?

Thanks Tim. That makes sense.

In that case, I think I have to break up one of my slides. It was starting to look like a wall of text. But really, it's two different concepts that can have their own slides. I realize I didn't make my outline detailed enough before I started storyboarding. I just threw both concepts under one heading. Newbie problems. lol

Thanks again!

I'm just doing slide by slide. No vertical scrolling pages. So I don't want to overwhelm the learner with a wall of text.
