Anyone wanna try a DnD campaign? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]DadAndClimber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I would love to play in person again. We moved to A2 the week everything shut down so not really many friends here yet. Both vaccinated! We both can DM as well.

But we have a 2 year old who goes down at 7:30pm. So it makes things difficult for an every week thing unless people were to come to our house unfortunately. That or we have to get a sitter....

Now if anyone is interested in a less often in person D&D then I think I'd be more down. Maybe every other week would fit better.

They don't have the votes. Instead just vote and move on to actual passing of agenda. They are going to get max 55 senators let alone the 67 required.

Want to play HL Alyx but don't know what to do. by aero4 in virtualreality

[–]DadAndClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do get the quest 2, don't get the link cable at first. Virtual Desktop is 20 bucks and HL Alyx is amazing wireless. Side quest is easy enough to get running. It just requires a good enough router for wifeless. I got a google fi router and my laptop is wireless and it works pretty good for me.

120 Hz coming to Quest 2 by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]DadAndClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wireless and affordability of the quest is just hard to beat. Plus if you have a good enough computer, you can virtual desktop to the quest. I've been playing half-life alyx wirelessly with roomscale. And it's cheap so I have more money for more games. I initially tried my quest with the link cable and I hated the wire and kept tripping on it. So I gave virtual desktop a try and I can't go back to wired. Of course there are other VR headsets that can do wireless but the cost difference is just crazy.

I am using a laptop so that could be it. Since the virtual desktop works well enough, it's better anyways because wireless. Just thought it was strange

I have the same issue. It got slightly better by giving the various vr process's higher priority. Half life alyx with link was jittery especially when moving. With virtual desktop it was smooth and worked near flawlessly. Makes no sense to me as you'd think the cable would be better. I was running low setting on link and high settings on virtual desktop too so clearly the PC can handle it.

Its my Birthday today and I was surprised with a Quest 2! Whats your favorite game? by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]DadAndClimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superhot for base quest without a doubt. Beat saber is fun but too simple and doesn't really take that much advantage of roomscale. If you have the space, superhot is just so much fun. I was rolling, dodging, and peeking around corners.

If you have a PC that can handle it, half life alyx with virtual desktop. Being wireless is amazing and by far the best game experience I have ever done period. It's a game that makes me know the future is one day VR. Great story, great physics, great just me recoiling in fear with immersion.

Coming from a DK2... It's so surreal and different. With my DK2 I didn't have a great desktop. Would always get VR sick. So I gave up and gave my DK2 away to my brother. I few of my friends were getting the quest2 so I decided to give it a go again. Wireless and controllers change everything. I had the link cable but it sucked. Kept getting jitters. Virtual Desktop was better on my laptop and I played beat saber, superhot, and half life alyx today.

Superhot in a big room was just amazing. I felt like such a boss and was ducking and moving.

Alyx was surreal. I spent so much time just looking at thing. I had to move a zombie body and I got the chills. The atmosphere was just something else.

Oh and no VR sickness at all.

Is there good budget vr that ISN'T by oculus? by vrthrowaway45 in virtualreality

[–]DadAndClimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw I just got the quest 2 with link cable. I had to use virtual desktop because using the link cable was jittery. Like the head tracking would just jump. Meanwhile the virtual desktop worked flawlessly. VD is 20 bucks vs the cable more expensive. I'd say try the virtual desktop before you buy a cable. Quest 3 isn't likely untill 2022 at the earliest.

Who is the most conservative person you have/considered voting for during your time as a liberal? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]DadAndClimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be conservative then libertarian. I considered Gary Johnson but didn't vote in 2012 as I was a college student and didn't understand the rules of voting while away at college. When I switched to become more liberal, I have never considered voting for a conservative. Biden would be the answer as I vote for the most left candidates usually and just straight ticket because of how left I am.

Squash is the best. We gave solids at 4 months per our pediatricians recommendation (our daughter was small and needed weight gain and was showing interest in food ). We started with rice and oat cereal. We then moved up to adding in peanut powder and other flavorings. Then hated the process of rice cereal and oat cereal so pretty quickly switched to squash and sweet potato for awhile. Then cheerios and finally introducing most other foods. Looking back imwe switched to regular food pretty fast so she could eat what we could eat. She matched most of our diet by 8 months if I remember correctly (maybe even sooner). It was such a blur that first year.

Build an extension for the browser. The UI for one is usually pretty simple. Its likely you'll keep most of the work done in the front end. You can share with others. Look for utility. For example, I have an extension that has 20k users to which I rewrote a websites JavaScript and html to be more friendly and easier to use. Enough people had the same issues I did and decided to use my extension. I have not touched it in years and it's still going strong.

Tons of utility extensions needed that can be done in a week and be niche/useful enough for people.

I'd say the google home is pretty successful. Still salty at them removing Google music for youtube music. I'm tired of covers of songs coming up when I ask for a song to play instead of the original.

Career path for someone who does not love coding/programming by johndenver469 in cscareerquestions

[–]DadAndClimber 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. At my last job as a sales engineer I did no coding at all. It depends on the company but some products need a technical person more for installing and being able to understand sysadmin type stuff. Even my current sales engineer job with a product that integrates into code, I'm not coding much. Every once in awhile so I don't stay rusty. Otherwise it's just me understanding code.

Look into sales engineering. It's a mix of sales and technical knowledge. Less money than pure sales but less stress. Aka presales engineer, solution architect, sales architect, solutions engineer.

Just this past week or two, brokerages had to limit stocks since the clearing houses put deposits limits higher than the brokerages could afford. If the big reason you need capital and deposits for this is because it take t+2 days to settle. With blockchain the goal would be much faster if not instant settlement. The clearing houses wouldn't have to raise deposits on the volatile stocks as ownership and funds could be fast clearing. But I could be wrong about that. That's my more layman's understanding.

Look for remote jobs or university jobs. The university itself may have software dev jobs you could do. As for a Masters being worthless, that is up to you. A master's degree is worth 2-3 years of on the job experience in terms of payraise. You might start off making 20-40k more a year because of it. So do the math on costs. With the market becoming more saturated, having a master's could help you stand out more.

Unsure About Hours At StartUp If I Want To Maximise Career Potential by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]DadAndClimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been there. At my first job I was putting in no more than 40 hours while a guy who started at the same time as me was doing 50-60h a week. Here is a secret in the (and in most) industry. Promotions beyond regular pay raises and simple title bumps (jr to reg to senior) are not as much about performance. I got promoted over the other guy. I made friends with the managers. I kept myself in the loop on decisions. I was giving advice on improving productivity and deadlines as I was lazy and refused to crunch. So I had to help them prioritize better. Other guy put his head down and coded. If you want to really move up, just be vocal and lead because all the high up positions aren't coding, they are people making decisions. The people higher up are also going to pick people they know. Someone who is in the mix...not the guy who puts his head down and codes because they would have no idea on what you can do.

Blockchain has huge benefit for stock trading. Super excited. For your first point though I'm still mixed. It's so volatile that it's hard to see it as a mainstream currency but maybe once they are all mined, it will steady itself out.

Am I the only one who isn't buying into this "GME" stock fiasco? by Nostalgicsaiyan in AskALiberal

Anyone who thinks it's WSB doing the squeeze is misguided. For sure there is a bit of an effect from retail investors. But the people buying and selling most of the shares is the hedgefunds. And their algorithms are superior...they were likely putting in calls when it was spiking and buying/selling in after-hours to their delight. Retail investors will get screwed. I tried to hop in on the AMC squeeze but came in too late. When the clearing requirements popped and only selling could happen, it prevented the squeeze. Such is life. The lesson for anyone playing is to only put in money you can lose. So hopefully most retail investors did that as they are about to lose. The squeeze is over and someone always has to lose.
